    The world has increased over the last 100 years that it's difficult to imagine just how much things have changed during that time.
    Many of the world's most famous cities and country capitals bare little resemblance to their earlier selves.
    Take a look at these before and after pictures of beautiful cities to see what I mean.

      On the photo of Paris in 1900, what we see in the foreground are the pavilions of the Universal Exhibition. These are temporary constructions with metal frames and staff facings. On a photo from 1899 or 1901, they wouldn't be there either!

      Because cities end up crystallizing the period when countries modernized. In 100 years, Chinese cities will look a lot more like what they do today than what they looked 100 years ago.

    It's insane how these Asian cities were barely there in the early 20th century and then became these massive futuristic metropolises in such a short (relative) timeframe. This is awesome, I had no idea just how much development happened just within the last few decades of the 20th Century alone.

    Ah yes, the famous city of Rysstad, Norway. On a serious note, I'm Norwegian myself and I think it's really pointless to include a rural area into vids like this, those areas will by default not change much anywhere in the world.

    Fascinating! I grew up in downtown Frankfurt Germany in the 60’s and remember when it was safe to be out on the streets all day and night’s too. Today never! It’s so sad to watch a beautiful city become a manure pile to put it politely. (At least the Bahnhofviertel where I grew up).
    Conclusion: Not sure I can see all this as actual progress.

    Wow, cities were once small towns, that were peaceful and quiet. Now it seems all of them are getting too crowded :( thank god I’m leaving the city.

      We left a major metropolitan area back in 2019 (population a million) for a "small" city of 20K, surrounded by farms and other smaller cities/towns. It's still too big. Too crowded, too loud, crime is starting to go up...I can't wait to get out.

      Except that the buildings in the 1900 photo of Paris are "fake". These are the temporary pavilions of the Universal Exhibition, metal frames covered with staff facings. As quickly built as destroyed.

      @@nicolas2419 unfortunate that they took them down afterwords. They could have easily been reinforced a relatively cheap price, and would have made the city much more beautiful. They don’t even have to be functional and they’d still be amazing

      @@towaritch Paris has always been a dump, I invite you to read what Mozart had to say on the city of Paris (he explicitly said that Paris at the time was a shithole) or Victor Hugo, things don't change even centuries later, Paris was always seen as that crime ridden dump. Baron Hausmann in the late 1800s did a good job at renovating the city, but at the same time only put the problem away from the center, until the early to mid 1900s there was a big slum around Paris.

    For a change
    I noticed, compared to earlier, the cities look more greener than before.
    Especially, Paris, Seoul, Chicago and few more. The cities had baren land or some kind of road or mud but now they have gardens or long trees.

      this photo shows istanbul's historical area tourist known mosques and some historical buildings but istanbul too big and have 4 or 5 financial center and many skyscrapers office buildings residances( levent ataşehir maslak )and france/italian arcihtecture areas cafe's and shopping boutiqes (beyoğlu nisantaşı sarıyer beşiktaş ) americans and europeans didnt know too much place on istanbul and Turkey

    You either love it or you hate it. My great grandparents grew up in Los Angeles in the 1920s. The neighborhood they lived in is now a cheap strip mall. And on the property their house once stood, hundreds of people live, stacked like sardines, in small overpriced ($500k) condos.

    Most of these cities didn't change all that much, except for the Arabian and Asian cities. The color photos just obscure the similarities. If you do grayscale on both time periods, you'll see the same city, with just taller buildings and more developed roads.

    That so cold photo of Singapore in 2000 isnt even close to being right. I've been going there since 1992. That photo is a lot older than 2000.

      Nope. That was Tokyo. Tokoy suffered more damage from being fire bombed for months than Hiroshima suffered from the one bomb. Definitely a Tokyo picture.

      In other parts of the world much many buildings went down during the wars, and NY only got fatter because of that. I don't say that the collapse of WTC was good, but just think of Europe and the rest of the world.

      I was 10 years old in 1962 and yes, I remember Lower Manhattan before the towers ever went up. I sometimes wish that, just for a day, I could go back to 1962 and walk around the old neighborhoods.

    Okay, but the places with "Then" shots from 2000 are kind of awe inspiring. Most of us were around when those cities were not yet cities. That's kind of amazing, and makes you realize how fast things change.

    the Pripyat one seems kinda morbid. crazy to think how it was one of Ukraine's biggest cities but now mostly nobody lives there after the nuclear disaster, and for good reason.

    Watching this video and seeing the huge change over such a short period in some cases made me realise we have absolutely zero chance of halting or even reducing consuming all of our Planets resources. Sad but true...the human race won't want to go backwards only forwards...but into what?

It is the stupidity of humankind that is controlled by greed and self interest that is the problem. By not being able to take care of resources in an efficient and effective way, yes we are consigning ourselves to a sad, sad future.

      They were buildings/pavilions built by different countries for an expo, which is why they are such different styles. They were all removed when the expo finished.

      Yes, altough it was meant to. Originally the idea was that the Eifeltower was only for the 1899 worldfair, so temporarely and it should have been taken down if the city hadn’t decided otherwise.

      @@lianborgiademedici1016 It was the Expoxition Universelle of 1900, the american flag was in the US pavilion,and the buildings are mostly temporary, dismantled after the event

    In some of the places...sea level remained same...example - last one...even with 100+ years time gap, sea level has not changed!!

    1:38 the picture taken in 1945 is after destruction by WW2. There were lots of buildings before the war.

      But Tokyo was not affected by nuclear bombs at all. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were completely hit.

Because after Japan's surrender from the war The United States had to pay for damages and rebuild the city. and enacted a law that prohibited Japan from having a military and Hiroshima is far from the capital. It's hard to get hit by the aftermath of a nuclear bomb.

    this photo shows istanbul's historical area tourist known mosques and some historical buildings but istanbul too big and have 4 or 5 financial center and many skyscrapers office buildings residances( levent ataşehir maslak )and france/italian arcihtecture areas cafe's and shopping boutiqes (beyoğlu nisantaşı sarıyer beşiktaş ) americans and europeans didnt know too much place on istanbul and Turkey

    When first looking at the change in New York City, it may look small but if you look to the right of the image you will see the building in both shots, but in modern-day New York it looks small.

    Now let's be fair. Beautiful coloring and expert photography and technology really pretties-up these cities. Black and white make the rivers look brown, which they may be. Color them blue and you have a good-looking city.
