  • Some fossils are split in half laying uncovered from dirt ("just laying there") because over the last 60 years, the rains have beat down on these coal spoil pile hills, washing dirt away, exposing "nodules". Nodules are the rocks that contain the fossil. Now that the fossil is laying on the exposed ground, water and moisture enters through small pores. During winter time, the water/moisture freezes, and when water freezes it expands. Well, over the years cracks begin to form, depending on how much water is inside the fossil, (pressure from the inside from the water expanding causes cracks just like in pavement) and sooner or later the fossil splits open by itself :) BUT, Thats a very small percentage, most are chipped away and broken in the wrong spots, but when you find two complete halves its amazing.
I will make a video soon of all my good finds, and also video showing the process of how you can do the freeze/thaw method in your own freezer and crack open you own fossils - without destorying them with a hammer. DO NOT hammer open fossils, you ruin most of them. Have patience with freeze /thaw and you will get museum quality splits.
Check my ebay store for more fossils and rocks and crystals Thank you 🐺😁 Ebay Jim1717

WOW dude! That is really impressive - the number of those rocks you found out there. I really liked the sounds of the winds and trees swaying in the video. It made it so dramatic. Great video my friend - hope to see you on the trail (or Snake Road haha) soon!

My daughter myself abd her fiance went on Sunday. We had a hard time figuring out where to look and the ticks were so bad. We did find small ones but have cracked them open yet. Do you have a recommendation or any tips for next time.....maybe you can with us lol😂

I made a mistake of going to Pit 11 a week ago. Too much foliage at this time. It was my 2nd trip, so still a noob. Lesson learned: don't look for fossils during summer.

You can try searching shorelines by kayak or boat this time of year- sometimes new nodules erode out of the banks and sit along the edge or in shallow water ✌

The one at 7:35 is gonna be sweet. Don't hammer it, unless you want to screw it up. Use the freeze/thaw method on that one and you should have a real beauty. And you missed the complete concretion about 8" down and to the right of that one. Looks like that spot hasn't been collected for years. Is that on private property? Most of the good spots are. I spent a lot of time down there collecting until health became an issue.

Yes it's a private club with hundreds of strip hills. I've spent days searching each and every one and other areas and so far nothing else compares to this hill. I can't believe I missed one in the video but hey that's what I get for not paying attention. I'm working on a video of all my nice finds I have quite a few museum quality. Thanks for watching and commenting !

Do you have coordinates for this location? Or what I can put in the GPS to get there? I used to live in Morris and want to go Fossil hunting.

This land is a private outdoor/fishing club & campground, you need to be a member to get in, but there are supposedly public places you can go look like Mazon state fish & wildlife area. Just use Google earth and look for coal strip pit style hills and go exploring, or maybe try looking up some other areas. Most of tje public places have been picked clean but sometimes it pays off to explore new hills. Late winter during thaw or spring is best before all the weeds grow. Sorry I couldn't really help u. Try looking up the maps and googling mazon creek fossils and soak up all the information you can. Study the range maps
