Enormous Dinosaur Footprint Excavation! A Palaeontologists Dream

  • Here’s a video featuring the collection of a now famous, rare fossil dinosaur footprint! This is one of the largest and best-preserved footprints from this type of dinosaur ever found, featuring potentially unique features. As this specimen is important for science, we were called upon by Palaeontologist Dr Dean Lomax to help collect this incredible fossil, since it was stuck far along a boulder field in an immense slab. The fossil was found by Rob Taylor and Marie Woods, who we met on the day. We also met other Palaeontologists down at the beach and after several hours of reducing the size of the slab so that it was able to be carried, we successfully completed the task of carrying it back across the boulder field to safety. I hope you enjoy the video, and stay tuned for more updates from Dean regarding the footprint! If you would like to check out more awesome posts and finds from Marie, her instagram page is @archaeoadventurer.

    Thanks so much for saving this important specimen for science, before it was too late. I'm glad that I could orchestrate this to be collected, and I'm incredibly grateful to you all for your time, generosity and expertise. It will now be studied and eventually placed on public display for generations to enjoy. A wonderful job. P.S. Sorry I couldn't help... being on crutches, I don't think I'd have been much help. I owe you help with the next one ;)

    The best part of this video was the work your family put into retrieving it from the beach, carried it along the rocks then up the hill, loaded it into the car, then off to wherever it ended up. But the main point was the father and two sons did nearly all the rock removal, go Shae, then the three of them did at least 90% of the hard graft, gotta give it to the girl though she sure did her part. It would have been nice to have your names mentioned. Fantastic job lads and Dad, stay healthy and COVID free, Cheers from the land of beer.

    What an excellent video, and what truly hard and delicate work your family put in to extracting that print. Thank you for all your efforts, both to save the print and to show us all about it.
    Question: Was there any discussion of if this was a left print or a right print? Are there any thoughts about incising further into the hill to see if there is a matching one or an impression of the dinosaur further reclining on a hip?

    • @YorkshireFossils
      @YorkshireFossils  3 года назад +3

      Thank you very much, I really appreciate that. That’s a good question actually, I wish I had asked! I’m sure that that is something that will be discussed when it is research a bit more back at the Museum. In terms of footprints at this location, one similar print has been found in the past, but nothing like the quality and detail of this one. I’m sure another print will be eroded from the cliff at some point, however whether or not is is as crisp and perfect as this one will be a different matter entirely 🦖🦕

    I've just got to see this video. Incredible effort on everyone's part. I live in South Wales, Barry to be exact. I was nearly involved in an extraction of a footprint, during lockdown. It was no where near the size of that one. About 8inches long,but of such good detail it had to be extracted. We where asked if we could do it, but as of it's significance,Cardiff museum staff came off furlow and they collected it instead. Phew!!!! 😅. Great work guys, keep it up.

    What an amazing find! Many years ago I found a rock with a bird foot print clear as a bell. I am hopeful for it to be returned to me some day.

    It would be interesting to have a look at that layer still in the cliff face to see some more tracks.

      Thank you, I’m really glad that you enjoyed it! I appreciate your comment so much. We certainly slept lots after and ached for ages 🤣🤣 It’s certainly possible that in the future another footprint might come out! However it is very likely to be as good quality as this one ☝️
