  • In this video I show how I do a quick and easy water change on my 6ft African Cichlid tank.
    There are 3 main steps:
    Using a syphon to remove poo
    Pumping out the remaining water into the garden
    Adding prime then using a hose to refill the tank straight from a tap
    **Some important things to remember are**
    Large changes to water chemistry can cause shock to fish and result in death!
    Always ensure you are adding water that is a similar temperature to your fish tank water
    If you don't normally do large water changes, do not do a huge water change out of the blue, start with smaller more frequent ones
    Make sure you add water conditioner
    Avoid doing do a huge water change AND cleaning the filters out, as it can result in an extreme loss of beneficial bacteria, break your cycle and cause a spike in ammonia/nitrites
    Happy fish keeping, and thank you for watching :D

    Hi Kaity, I use an old credit card attached to a long dowel to scrape the algae of the glass.
    Cut (split) the dowel in half about 30mm glue and wedge the card in and use that to scrape the hard to remove algae. Or if you don't have saw you can use two wooden rulers and put the credit card between the rulers about 30mm from one end and glue together. No chance of scratching the glass.
    Thanks

    Hi Kaity, I basically change my Aquarium water the same way, I saw a video made by Jason ( Prlme Time Aquatics) who I feel is up there with best, a very knowledgeable man, I was some what shocked when he washed his sponges under running Tap water. Then noticed that the other two Aquarium top people KG Tropicals & Aquarium Co - Op also now do the same thing.
    I have been washing my sponges under a running water for the last 12months without any problems in my 200 Lt Tank.
    Saves me a lot work

    You mentioned having an FX6, have you ever thought about using it to perform your water changes? Huge benefit to that is that it back flushes the filter and keeps it pretty clean. We’re going 12 months between cleanings by doing it this way. Beautiful tank btw!!!!

      Thank you so much! :D And yes, I've got 2 FX6's on the tank, I have actually never considered using them for a water change, but that's not a bad idea! I might need to look into how to do that and give it a go and see how it compares. I tend to avoid touching the filters because everytime I do I swear something goes wrong haha

    Nice. Just bought a similar pump for filling and emptying. I can't use tap water here as it's already around 30ppm of Nitrate so I have a Reverse Osmosis system that fills a 230L water butt. The pump and hose will not only empty the tank but flip it around and it will fill the tank with RO from the giant barrell

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  2 года назад +1

      That's a great double use for it! That sucks about the nitrates in your tap water though, that really complicates things for you

    • @dascudder
      @dascudder 2 года назад

      @@Kaityscichlids It's fine now. Constantly filling numerous 25 litre barells of RO water at 4 hours a time was a slow pain (and syphining 25L drums to empty the tank, then empty the drum). Now I can just let the RO system run for a day and a half and I have 230L of pure nitrate free water. But yeah, tap water would have been easier. It's a labour of love, but so worth it. Anyway, new sub here. Love your tank....

    Never have any jumpers with no lid? In my 1000 liter south american tank after i did a water change i left my plastic lid about 3 inches open on one side. I went out to walk my dog and came back because i forgot a plastic bag for poop. I happened to hear my gorgeous gold severum dancing around on top of the lid somehow. Saved the disaster but it really nailed down for me how important a lid is. I am recently back in the hobby after years away and I know naked tops are fashionable but i cant leave it uncovered still.

    @2:50, what you could do instead of sucking on the tube(which could lead to some water getting into the mouth for those with shorter garden pipes😬) just leave the end of the pipe down the drain and on the tube in the tank fill it full of water and then raise it up above the aquarium. As you notice the water in the tube start to escape through the garden pipe place the tube back into the aquarium so more water enters the tube before all water escapes through the garden pipe. Gravity will do the rest.
