Important and often overlooked topic. I wish I had seen this video when I first got my high energy working line Golden Retriever 2 years ago. We’ve worked hard and have come a very long way, for sure, but I feel we would have done even better, and the path would have been smoother had we worked on socialization prior to completing all required vaccinations (contrary to our vet’s advice).

Lots of great information! Personal favorite was that “…people are idiots.” I think we under-explain that people do dumb stuff and have assumptions of other peoples dogs. It is not that they can’t learn, but have not been taught better ways to interact. I was like that until I was told how to approach dogs. I still have to fight my desire to approach excitedly and aggressively.
How to approach a puppy and letting it approach you definitely made sense and wish I'd known that earlier.. thanks.

Yes, the science is the same. What varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training.
Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early.

I foster shelter dogs with behavior issues. Alot of the adult dogs are fearful and not confident because they have lived much of their lives in a cage and never got much exposure to new things like other dogs, animals, obstacles and people. I try to socalise these dogs and build their confidence, but it is so much easier and better for the dog if you start this training as soon as possible when they are puppies!

My puppy is now 12 weeks, i got her with 10 weeks. I wish i saw this earlier
If I try my dog she would freak and try to run even through I'm with her I got her when she was one year old and then when she hit 2 1/2 that when it start and I. Been working with her not to be so afraid I live in Hemet CA thank u so much for showing this

In many videos I’ve seen you say with puppys biting hands and so on that you don’t discourage it because they are a working line, future protection, or competition dogs. However if the dog will just be a family pet is there a different way to approach it. Thanks

My dog wants to greet by jumping on people. She is a 2 year old rescue and heeler/sheherd mix. Have had her 8 weeks. Some people she lunges at their feet or shoes. What is the best way to get her unfixated on their feet and to greet calmly?
I brought home a 12 week old puppy who is scared of almost everything…I am trying to do right by her and socialize her as much as possible but I’m not sure how to approach it since she is in that fear period. Would love any tips anyone has 🙏😅

Nate, thanks so much for sharing such quality content. My dog Frank and I are training hard to make him a service dog, and I’ve been using your advice a lot. He’s making great progress.
One thing I’d like to kindly ask you to answer in a video or here, if you can, is how do I train Frank not to sniff (he doesn’t do it too much, but still not good enough for a service dog) when we enter a store or a restaurant. How do I train this? We’re now at a stage where whenever I take him to a restaurant, he will settle nicely on command next to me and remain in down stay for many minutes, but before he settles, he wants to sniff around and under the table a bit and requires me to give him commands multiple times. Same in the store: he remains next to me, doesn’t really pull, but still likes to sniff whatever is within his reach a little too much.
Please share any ideas. I would greatly appreciate it and I believe your other followers would also benefit. :)

So, to my understanding, I would pop the leash or say 'No', and then give Frank a few seconds not to sniff until I reward with my continuous marker and praise/treat (so he doesn't learn that it pays to sniff, because he then gets rewarded immediately after he's stopped). Did I get it right?
What if you miss that time period from a dog that was abused as puppy and terrified of people. Can this fear protection be un done?

Can a 9 week old puppy be anxious and if so, is it able to be trained out of her? She is pretty fearful of everything.
We avoid dog parks like the pest because more often than not the dogs there aren't properly socialized. And to be honest, lots of dog owners could benefit from some socialization, too lol.

Yes, socializing and training is important to start early in a dogs life. I personally start training as socializing once the puppy is comfortable in their new environment.

I hear various different opinions on the Socialization period. Some say 12wks, some 16wks and now 13wks. Is there any actual number that is correct? Or does is vary on dog species etc? 🤔
I have a question, I got my puppy at 7.5 weeks, I started doing shaping and luring, he’s now 9 weeks, at what age do I start naming the commands. He’s doing great with luring.
Once we have our dog performing the action the way that we like with our physical cue, it is then time to give the behavior a command. The command can be physical or verbal. In order for your dog to learn the command, you must say or perform the command ONCE and then show your dog the physical cue. Don’t make the mistake of repeating the command or saying something like “good sit” after the dog is already sitting, which can send mixed signals to a dog that is already sitting.

Hi! My GSD is 13 weeks now and due to a bacterial infection and a scratched cornea, I've only been socializing and going places as of last week (since she was about 11.5 weeks). Am I doomed?! She's fine at hardware stores and pet stores, but she's scared of dogs. Is it too late, will she now be reactive to dogs since she's at the 13 week mark?!
No, it's not too late. Just keep exposing your dog to new environments and make it fun to create that strong positive association. Check out the videos below for more info:

So I haven’t seen this video until recently and I never knew how important confidence building is at a young age for dogs. I watched your basic obedience series to train my dog when I first got him and he’s doing very well but since I never got to do any confidence building with him, he is becoming shy and scared of certain interactions. For example, EVERY single time he meets another dog whether they just want to sniff him or even play with him, he will do the submissive position and will not move until the dog is no longer focused on him. He has never been attacked or bit by another dog but he acts like it when he meets any big, medium, or small dog. He is a yorkie who is 10 months and pretty obedient for all the training I was able to do while in college. Is it too late to change any of his scared behaviors and build confidence since he is way past the 13 week mark? If not, what can I do to start helping him? Thank you

What about kids approaching strange dogs? I usually always have the kids stand straight up rather than get down on the dog's level. By getting down on the dog's level, if the dog does bite, the kid's face is right there and now they're off balance because they bent down to the dog's level. Please advise.
Yes, I personally don't recommend letting kids pet strangers dogs, but with family and friends dogs that are trusted, it's okay. They can usually stand, since they're much smaller than adults and usually won't intimate most dogs with their size.
On hot days I gently hose down the dogs or use a cold wet towel.

Actuelly, do I even need to socialize them with other dogs, since there are five of them?
They’ll need to be socialized around safe dogs at some point. They are only familiar with their litter mates, and this can form issues in the future (for socializing or training) because they tend to use one another for confidence and assurance. Having all five at once meet a safe dog might be far too overwhelming for the dog they’re meeting, and since you want to maintain structure, have the puppies crated and introduce them to the safe dog one at a time. That way, you can ensure good short and safe experiences.
Yes, I would start with one at a time and then I would start working them together when I worked through the early stages.

Hello Nate, I want to ask a very important issue.
I have brought home a Belgian Malinois. Its been a month now..she is 3 months old now
Whenever I start any kind of training to her and try to pet her a little after giving her a treat she growls on me as if she will bite me. I tried saying "No" and what not but she continues to do even today. Even when I touch her generally, she growls at me. I will be introducing her to kids next month but I am scared that she will bite them. Please tell me something. If she doesn't behave, I have to give her away what I don't want to.

Nate I have 2 new Dutch Shepheard do you have any ideas on how to train both at the same time? or is it best to train one at a time?
I always train one at a time, and when both are fully trained, I can start working with both of them together, so they know they need to listen regardless of the distractions.

Yes, you should be able to. With any dog, you need to learn how to read their body language so you don't overtrain them. As long as you keep the sessions short and fun, then you shouldn't have any issues. :)

The only thing that confused me , was Bethany said she lets people do what they want when interacting with a puppy before 13 weeks of age . When does she determine that the interaction isn’t going well and then cuts it off ?
She would determine that on a case-by-case basis.
I seriously thought that I should keep my puppy until 12 weeks old. This video is great to know! One question is, can we socialise the puppy who has not gotten its 2nd vaccination with our neighbour's dog? Please response.
Yes, just make sure the other dog is vaccinated and friendly with puppies. Also keep in mind that anytime you are socializing a puppy that there are some risks, however small. In my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.

So, when new people, or people my puppy doesn’t see very often, come over to my house, my 16 week German Shepherd puppy runs and hides behind the couch. Is this something normal that he’ll grow out of?

In theory by 12 weeks a dog should have had 2 distemper parvo vx so risks are lower but plz everyone vx a puppy before going to places because most home depot's are near a PetSmart

You can do that as well. Just don't do too much too soon or you can stress the pup out.
I'm not sure why she said she lets her puppies bite?
She doesn't want to discourage the biting since she breeds for working dogs and protection sports.

Saying that a puppy enters a fear period around the time that they're finished being vaccinated is bullshit. I successfully socialized my Rough Collie puppy in that time period by training her to enjoy a wagon. We would go everywhere and to the mall. I also put her in shopping karts. She never hit the ground where I didn't want her to be. She is three now and a very well adjusted dog who is used for therapy work. People get dogs and they realize that they can't even go out in public, and taking their dog out is even scarier. We live in a strange time for dog training.
ALSO: Just saying "poop" and "water" is not enough. Pups get parvo from even being on the same grass in a city where its common. If you live in a populated area, just don't risk it, especially if you just put 2 grand down on buying your new best friend! Be insanely cautious and creative.

The biggest battle for me are vet techs. They think they’re professionals and know what’s best for your puppy.
