It will NEVER happen again. No pitcher of that age is gonna be allowed to throw 200+ innings again. That's what it'll take for anyone else to get 300+ in a season.
2014 detroit tigers rotation was stacked. Verlander, Scherzer, Robbie Ray, David Price. I know Robbie wasnt in his prime then, but looking back now they were STACKED.
I remember reading somewhere that Verlander's workout regimen is absolutely insane. His body is built for longevity and he works harder than anybody. So it doesn't surprise me seeing Verlander still dominating at his age.
Verlander and Kershaw were my two favorite pitchers when I played baseball in high school in the early 2010s. I never could have guessed that 10 years later, both would still be putting up solid numbers. Time is such a weird thing lol.
My man... smh. I remember watching Brady in his first Super Bowl. I agreed with John Madden. “This guy isn’t that good. He should really take a knee instead of trying to march down the field with no time left...” I was 12. I’m going on 35 and now he’s the GOAT, has every record, has more Super Bowls than any other FRANCHISE and the guy is STILL killing it.
Not rly werevgoing to see ALOT of pitchers keep high velocity later in their careers thanks to weight lifting & new analytical velocity workouts/programs.
A few decades ago we had a bunch of pitchers go well into thier 40s and continued to play well. Johnson, Moyer, clemens, Wakefield, Maddux, glavine, Ryan, wells, and I'm probably missing a few. I feel like I haven't seen it in a bit but use to a lot
I feel that many pitchers "train" their way into being pitchers today and don't really have the bodies to handle throwing 100mphs for 5-7 innings and they just destroy their arms in the process. They kinda just force velocity when their bodies can't handle it is my theory about it atleast.
@@Racc-Kun_YT I think you're onto something here. With all the absolutely disgustingly nasty pitching these days coming from the same guys who can also routinely throw upper 90s and triple digits, it seem like pitchers are going for impossible stuff even if it's not sustainable or built for longevity. Starters seem to rarely go 7 innings anymore whereas not that long ago starters routinely went well over 100 pitches per outing. It's crazy when a team can just plug in a 3rd or 4th bullpen arm that can also touch 100mph and spin a wipeout slider.
Not saying the sticky wasn’t used, but I could definitely see the surgery having an effect on spin rate. I’ve definitely noticed a difference in some of his pitches, whether it is due to that or mechanical tweaks he’s implemented. Seems like his slider has a different shape and his curveball has much better bite than in previous years. Which I wouldn’t have predicted in a post sticky substance game.
I could see him entering the HOF without a logo on his cap. Kind of like Roy Halladay. He had long term success with TOR, but his iconic moments and chance to win a WS came with the Phils. Pretty similar to Verlander
It’s a bit of a different thing with Halladay, and not in the best way. Halladay is quoted as having said he wanted to go in as a Blue Jay. However, after he died, the Hall decided to show respect for the dead and defer to his widow on what cap to use. Unbeknownst to them, his widow had a major chip on her shoulder, as she had always objected to him buying the plane that he ended up dying in, so she requested a blank cap just to screw him over a bit. Personally, I feel worst for Blue Jays fans, who now most continue in a world where the only HOFer with a Blue Jays cap is a fucking rapist.
tbh whether or not he used sticky stuff doesn''t really matter because in 2022 with the ban of the substances, he still has some elite spin rate on his pitches
Jordan Zimmerman thinks he’s using something to throw that fast. I don’t believe him you take a look at his legs THAT’S why he still throws as hard as he does
Justin Verlander seems like our last great hope to keep the 300-win club alive. He's a year younger than Randy Johnson when the Big Unit was making his way through the 230s in career win, but already older than other "graybeards" like Early Wynn, Gaylord Perry, and Nolan Ryan, all of whom reached 300 at age 43. He's going to need to pitch until his mid-40s to get those last 60-some wins, but his performance this season provides a glimmer of hope.
Kershaw was never a flamethrower. He topped out at 96 during his peak. He hit 97 and 98 a couple times. Kershaw has become more of a finesse pitcher relying on his baseball IQ and his nasty curve and slider Verlander is still throwing heat but I will be interested to see how he handles himself when the fastball just isn't there anymore.
That’s the thing about “no breaking balls” nowadays. These modern good pitcheTD put so much gdamn spin in their fastball, even without sticky stuff, those supposed fastballs MOVE. That’s also why your seeing fewer change ups from a lot of guys. I mean sure a big part of a change up was just that, a change of speed, but when you are seeing change ups in the high 80s really they were just fast balls that moved. But now they can throw balls that move like change ups but throw them in the mid 90s or even faster. So it’s like why throw change ups? Get you change of pace stuff with curve balls and sliders.
Nolan Ryan was a beast, in the conversation for GOAT but I believe now Verlander can surpass him if he stays til he’s 45. He’s just A durable strikeout machine who throws absolute gas and if he gets to 45 in the show, I like his chances of claiming the title of GOAT.
That’s not even ironic in the colloquial way so many people misuse the term. Just not ironic in any way. I think the word you are looking for is “coincidence.” And not much of one. There are a lot of ball players, comparatively few teams, these guys play for a lot of teams over their careers, etc. May as well say it’s “ironic” Jeter, Ruth, and Chuck Knoblauch all played for the Yankees..
Mid to late 30s isn’t even old for pitchers now. Jaime Moyer pitched till he was almost 50. It’s no surprise to me that scherzer , kershaw and verlander and guys like that are still pitching well. Also helps to have really strong tendons

I'm going to miss him when he leaves the Astros this offseason, but as long as he doesn't go out in douchebag style like Gerritt Cole did then I'll always wish him the best (except against the Astros). He brought a lot to the organization and seemed to enjoy his time here.
Ok , Let's talk about velocity over time in game. You don't seem to be using the real world Mechanics here of "loosening up" an elite arm. Nolan Ryan threw a pitch marked at 101 MPH at the plate -- it would be 108 mph if measured out of his hand by today's guns -- he threw this in the 9th inning on pitch #141 of the night. Shohei Ohtani This week threw 108 Pitches in a 8 inning game. He was tossing 94-96 MPH fastballs in the 1st-6th innings, then he turned it up to 100 MPH in the 7th and 8th innings. Randy Johnson would often start off games throwing 93-95 MPH, then turn it up to 101-102 MPH by the 8th inning. Roger Clements was the same way. This happens with every horse -- AKA "fast pitching innings eater" who gets deep into a start.
I know TJ is a tough surgery to come back from but when you do you're a completely rebuilt player with a brand new fresh arm. I feel like there has to be some kind of study on that being some unfair advantage over players who don't have a freshly rebuilt arm
