    Otyken is a Siberian folk fusion band under Khangurai. The band currently consists of Azyan, Hakaida, Tsveta, Maya, Otamay, Ach, Kunchari, Muna and Snezhana. It was formed in 2015, and debuted on June 5, 2018 with the album Otyken. Azyan she my favorite member from OTYKEN! Otyken is awesome. I concur with the suggestions of My Wing and Phenomenon. This collaboration was good, but truthfully, Otyken have their own throat singers that are incredible. I love how they mix modern styles with the native music. Just for history sake, I would like to point out the "Native American" styles you see. The ancestry of Native Americans actually came from Siberia across what is now called the Bering Straits and spread across North America and South America. Their culture is actually the forefathers of our indigenous tribes, thus the similarities.

    Altay (region in south Siberia) is the hypotethical ancestral home of all Turkic languages tribes (peoples). Ummet Ozcan is a Dutch DJ and record producer of Turkish origin.
    Otyken [O-tu-k`en] is one of the best Russian "modern folk" groups. Their texts are in Khakass, Chulym and Russian languages. Word "Otyken" in Chulym and other Turkic languages means - "a sacred land where warriors would lay down their arms and talk".
    Azyan - vocals; Ach - keyboard, throat singing; Kunchari - igil (two string cello); Otamay - komuz (two-three string guitar); Tsveta - vargan (aka mouth harp, jaw harp), drums, komuz, vocals; Maya - drums; Hakaida - bass-drums; Aiko (Muna from this year) - bass guitar.

  • @ElanurMH

    Ummet Özcan and the band members of Otyken have Turkic roots, both belong to different Turkic tribes whose original homeland was central Asia and Siberia
    (although some new findings now suggest that the Turkish tribes were first in the Near East, Anatolia and even further west in the Mediterranean, i.e. southern Europe, thousands of years ago and then migrated to Asia)
    Over thousands of years, due to migration and the very large geographical areas, the different Turkic tribes grew apart from each other. Some of these tribes even migrated across the Bering Strait to North America thousands of years ago and are the ancestors of the indigenous tribes there.
    Although the various Turkic clans are widely distributed throughout Asia and Europe, they share the same original language in various dialects, same culture, instruments and mythology.
    According to Turkic mythology and history, the area around the Altay Mountains was the original home of many Turkic tribes and "Otyken/Ötüken" was the first capitol of these tribes.This area is sacred to most of the Turkic tribes and clans.
    Ummet Özcan, who himself has Turkish roots, is a DJ and lives in the Netherlands. He uses the throat singing technique here, which is very common among the Turkish and Mongolian peoples in Asia.
    Many instruments used here are also ancient and traditional.The second instrument Ozcan plays is the "dombra", also called ikili (iki means 2 in Turkic languages) because it has 2 strings. A further development of this is the Turkish Saz/Bağlama which has more strings (6 - 7). The mouth instrument looks modern, but the traditional version of it has existed for hundreds of years and is called "Gubuz". If I saw it correctly, there is also something like "Muhinhur" (an instrument with a horse's head and the strings made from the hair of the horse's mane) and "Kılkopuz", also called ikili, a kind of mixture of violin and double bass, the strings also made of horse hair.
    Ozcan sings about ancient Turkish deities that the Turkic folks believed in when they were still shamans.
    Here are the names of some of the goddesses and gods Özcan sings about:
    * Tengri = sky god. He is the creator of everything. Tengri was the main god of the Turkish pantheon who controlled the celestial sphere.
    * Kayra or Kaira = Supreme God of the Universe
    * Adaghan = mountain god.
    * Ülgen or Ulgen = God of goodness.
    * Mergen = God of wisdom.
    * Kyzaghan/Kızagan = god of war
    * Umay = goddess of fertility. She is also the goddess of virginity and therefore refers to women, mothers and children.
    * Kuara = God of Thunder
    * Kubai/Kübey = Goddess of birth and children. It protects women who give birth.She gives children soul.
    * Koyash/Kuyaş = Sun God. Koyash is the son of Sky Tengri and the Earth Goddess.
    * Ak Ana = (Ak means White) Goddess of Creation. She is the original creator goddess of the Turkish people. She is known as the goddess of water.
    * Ay Ata = God of the Moon.
    * Gun Ana/Gün Ana =
    Goddess of the Sun.
    * Yel Ana = Goddess of the Wind
    * Yer Ata = God of the Earth
    * Od Ata or Öd-Ögöd = God of time. In Turkish mythology, he is seen as the personification of time. Often seen with the Time Horse
    * Od Ana = Goddess of Fire. She is also called the goddess of marriage

    If you are looking for a cultural difference, try Kodo', Japanese Ta i-ko drumming. 20-40 people on stage playing drums and other instruments, captivating. Live at the Acropolis, was a concert they did in Greece, in a traditional amphitheater. My best suggestion for a single track is "Iridori". Excellent selection of flutes and drums, probably my personal favorite of all time.

    Otyken is the sacred capital of the Turks in Central Asia. It is also accepted as the name of the place where Turks first existed and dispersed throughout the world. Someone who named his band Otyken must have wanted to emphasize his Turkish origin rather than his local Siberian affiliation. Those who don't know may not realize it, but this song, its subject, the Gök Tengri belief, the instruments, Ummet Özcan's throat music, everything is related to Turkic culture.

    Thank you Famjaycrew for suggesting, and thanks for checking them out. Additional background:
    Otyken are a group from remote central Siberia. They are all members of small tribes (Chulym, Ket, Selkup, Tuvan, etc.) who speak historically related Turkic languages. There are just over 50 native speakers of the Chulym language left in the world. Like other tribes in the region, they were decimated by centuries of invasion and war, and more recently by the rampant environmental destruction starting in the Soviet era.
    They play authentic traditional instruments, made by the band-members and their families. The artists also sew their own costumes. These are based on traditional indigenous outfits, but incorporate attributes of several Siberian tribes at once. They want to be ambassadors for all of the indigenous people of the region.
    Their instruments include: ikili (a two-stringed bowed instrument used in Siberia, similar to the Mongolian morin khuur); khomys (jew’s harp, also known as “jaw harp”); rattles similar to maracas and tambourines; a local variant of the mandolin; and several kinds of drums, as well as modern electric bass guitar and electronic keyboard/synthesizer. They occasionally play a saxophone they found abandoned in the forest near one of their villages.
    My favorite description of their ikili is “You look like someone who no one should mess with because your instrument was made out of a freakin’ BEAST!”
    Otyken incorporate throat singing and chanting into their vocals, as well as imitating wild animal sounds and bird calls. When they were founded, they started off doing straight-up folk music. When they began to add a fusion of folk with modern rock sounds, they found themselves attracting fans from all over the world.
    They are fully aware that their language and culture are dying. Part of their purpose in performing and recording their music is to leave behind a record of their culture before it is gone. Their manager and producer is a Russian who is married to one of them and is dedicated to getting their story out to the world. They have also become a symbol and a rallying point for indigenous people all over the world who have suffered the same kind of fate-guests in their own land.
    To date, they have released tracks mainly in Chulym, but also in Khakass, a related tribal language, and one song in Russian, addressed to the people who took their land. As they say in “Paradise Lost”: “The land is yours now, but the sky is ours.” Their most recent posted YT video is a plea not to destroy the planet: “Chukotka” ruclips.net/video/PENk6NBEyPs/видео.html

    New Japanese all female Rock band NEK! (pronounced NECK-EE) released their first MV a month or so ago. Many comparisons to Band-Maid, who clearly influence them. A band with a big future! The song is called GET OVER - ruclips.net/video/TWbLqba3oag/видео.htmlsi=fhCTDpb0CvE2-urK

    Scientists have proven that indigenous Indians from the United States first lived in Siberia near Lake Baikal, then crossed the Bering Strait to Alaska and therefore spread throughout America.

    Ummet Ozcan is doing Mongolian throat singing, that’s how he makes his voice like that, and before all the Turkic people start on me, I must remind you that during the 12th & 13th centuries even the Altai mountains of Siberia were part of the Mongolian Empire.

    The group is Otyken, pronounced O-tu-ken (at least I heard it that way on one of their live shows) and it’s a collaboration with Ummet Ozcan. Azyan, the main singer, has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. Please check out their video “Phenomenon.” You won’t be disappointed.😊
    There is a huge amount of diverse world fusion music out there. As a professional musician it is right in my wheelhouse! 😊
    I can give you dozens of groups and artists.

    People are surprized that this group is Russian. But Russia is big and incorporated diverses cultures.
    Unlike America, which mixed everyone in an inconsistency soup without any cultural identity, in Russia the regional cultures were preserved.

      Russia do actually a lot to destroy their minorities because especially the Asian regions have 80 to 90% army draft rates. That will destroy any local culture in 1 to 2 generation.

    Altai is part of Siberia. These peoples, of which many girls adhere to shamanism. The Khakass generally have a common gene with the Indians. The song is about the spirit of Altai, they believe in the spirits of nature.

    I think I read somewhere that Altay... is a place on the earth where it is a convergence of the countries Russia, China, Mongolia, Siberia, and 1 other I can't recall maybe Kazaistan the point is an almost mystical convergence of cultures and peoples and different musical sounds

      The instrument was first used by the Siberian and Mongolian peoples centuries ago. It is believed to have made its way to the west with the expanding of the Mongolian empire. You can actually hear it used in some traditional Scandinavian music.

      The mouth harp was pretty popular even in the fifties and sixties when I was young. It was often an instrument that a country/folk/bluegrass group might have because of the twang sound it produces.

    Otyken have not two similar musics. I suggest first Legend - official music video, when they were very young, second Revolution Percussion - from world music next Wld Girls - native jazz from Siberia; also Khan Blues, Fenomenon, Chukotka, Pulse (not Pulse of the Earth, which is a one hour concert), Belief and the last music, Oneness, made for a Japanese movie. There are more traditional songs of them, as Paradise Lost and the voice of Otamay in Lord of Honey at Ivzestya Hall.
