Hi, I'm from Brasov, I was smiling all through your video. What you ate at "La Ceaun" was like 2 days' meals for me. We usually don't eat "sarmale" - cabbage rolls in restaurants, we cook them at home, usually on Christmas, we also cook home "bulz" as dinner with family, it's easy to cook and keeps our belly full, with "ciorba de fasole in paine" - bean soup in bread is a different story, we cook beans in many different ways, but is very time-consuming to also bake the bread, so we eat that one when we get out for lunch. The pork we can eat at breakfast with eggs, at lunch with smushed potatoes and at dinner with salads. I have to check the "placinta" that you ate, because I don't think I've tasted that one, from exactly that place. Nice to watch that you enjoy some Romanian food, I enjoy them daily, I always do the same thing when I travel... I want to taste all the local cuisine.

Just a heads up. Palenta takes place of bread. So you eat palenta with sarmale or whatever the dish is, never palenta on its own like mashed potatoes or something like that. Palenta is basically corn bread. Also, always order papanasi in advance because it's always made fresh. It takes 20-30 minutes to make, so you better order it from the start next time.

Since when can’t we have polenta on its own? :)
Polenta is really versatile; most often we have it as a side, like you would have mashed potatoes; we can eat it instead of bread; you already had “bulz” and polenta with cheese and sour-cream is another stand-alone dish, with polenta at the core. And - a bit out of fashion now - it can be a desert, by having it with milk.

Watching you I realized that I have never actually had sarmale (cabbage rolls) in a restaurant, only home made. My mother has 2 sarmale recipes - one for autumn/winter and one for summer. The sauerkraut and minced pork that you've sampled is for winter. The recipe for summer sarmale is minced poultry and rice wrapped in grape leaves and boiled in white wine - now these really are "to die for".
Additional info: sarmale is an Ottoman recipe and most E-European countries have their own kind.

Hey guys! Congrats on your food tour in Brașov! Small piece of info: the papanași (or papanashi 😛) dough is made with a lot of fresh cow cheese, a Romanian variant of Ricotta cheese and they are served with sour cream and a variety of jams (sour cherry, blueberry) that have an acidic note note in order to balance the fat and the sweet in the dish. As the majority f the foods you have tried at „La Ceaun” (or „At the cauldron”) the papanași are quite an indulgent food the need some time spent at the gym. But boy, do they worth it!

    - Ciorbă de burtă or Ciorbă Rădăuțeană ( or both ). It's a heavy soup with garlic and cream, the first one has pork belly, the other one has chicken. I personally prefer the chicken one since it's lighter.
    - Mici. Lamb meat on the grill, usually served with mustard or a garlic sauce or in desperate times ketchup. It's not a deli dish but they're great on a summer day with a cold beer.
    - Colivă. Although it's usually served for funerals, it's really delicious. It's a sweet dessert with wheat, nuts, honey/sugar, almonds, etc.
    - Tochitură. It's a lot like bulz, but has some tomato sauce as well. Mamaliga/Polenta, salty cheese, a fried egg and some smokey meat ( ham/bacon )

You eat the soup with the bread and take a bite of the onion. The aubergine spread you eat with the bread and tomato and onion at the same time, the flavors mix well all together. The sarmale you take on your fork polenta with sarmale you dip in cream and you bite the pepper after, all flavors need to mix in your mouth. Of course, you can eat it as you please.

You can't eat traditional romanian food in restaurants from a big city... În România receipts are very different from every region... But old type of romanian food is hard to find. Right now is hard to find the taste of some dishes like my grandmother used to cook.
Even the cabbage rolls, are different , depends of region, county or family...
But we have some old receipts that almost disappeared... It's so difficult to explain... We had a lot of simple type of food, based on some veggies and they are very rare in the present day.
Anyway, our representatives are "mici", "ciorba de burtă", "sarmale" , "papanaşi"... and something from my region - "virşli" (special sausages, boiled or grilled ).

I'm a foodie from Brasov, I'm impressed you found the langos place on the corner. For 1 meal you got the right stuff to try . The bread bowl for the beans soup is an obscure tradition revived last few years as a marketing stunt. Petru is for bakery is what Mc'Donalds is for burgers. Next time you come here put on the brave pants and try the tripe soup and try the transilvanian-hungarian cuisine - goulash szupe, paprikas, baked pig leg, Kürtőskalács. Nice vid overall, thank you for the interest.

    • @waysoftheworld_
      @waysoftheworld_  2 года назад +1

The place in the corner was a local's rec. That's the only reason why we found it. It's hard to find the places because a lot of the content in English you see out there is from tourists, so we don't know much compared to locals... that place we went to for lunch was a local's rec and we really liked it. What do you recommend for Covrig? Also yes, G is a big fan of Goulash and we do need to master the courage to try the tripe soup everyone has recommended... it's just that we are not used to eat that, but little by little we become more adventurous! And huge fans of Kürtőskalács, we even learned how to make it (sort of), it's just not in the video. Thanks for being here :)

@@waysoftheworld_ When you go from town square to the Black Church go past it 100m or so and in a small pizzetta you will find a restaurant "Vino e Sapori" which is arguably best place for fresh pasta and it has a great chef. Next to it there's a bakery which seems successful. I'l be honest, pastry is not a romanian strong point but that artificial jelly like jam in your covrig looked nothing like how we make jams. If you're interested next time you're around drop a shoutout and I can teach you to cook tripe soup and maybe I can arrange for you to film the preparations for a traditional wedding. There's a trick I like to do, when the chef cooks 1500 sarmale for a wedding I ask him to sneak in that pot 2 smoked pig legs and cook them for me. Also a great food time in Romania is before Christmas, when traditionally the pig is killed in the yard and as some people prepare sausages and meat for the smoker, someone else cooks "pomana porcului - pig's last rights" , a simple delicious dish of fresh meat fried in pig fat with garlic and polenta and the kids get the tail and maybe 1 ear. From the ear, feet and other cartilaginous parts and some meat we make a jelly which is eaten next day with horseradish and is delicious. "Racitura" was actually a quite popular international dish in victorian era, we just kept making it. If you want a taste of communism buy a few slices of "parizer de Cristuru" with "Crenvustila" or "Olympia" mustard on fresh bread. That's the best local baloney. Best "mici" in town by far you can eat at Rapid near the main train station on Victoriei bulevard.

You should try cabbage rolls alone also and just savour it.. or together with palenta, you don t have to build it like a taco just take whatever you feel... the sour cream gives it another flavour although good as well.. the cabbage rolls have their own type of soureness.. also you should try the simple Covrig just with salt above it in form of an upside down 8 with whiteness around it.. you should try "Zacusca"(another vegetable paste ) , "slanina"(pig fat), untura(pig fat paste with red onion, or spring bell, boia or vegeta) , "ciorba de burta"(pig belly sour soup/pork ripe soup, unique receipe it may sound bad but it is extremely tasty and healthy)... also feel safe to try LANGOS with anything I specially recomend Langos w MUJDEI w whatever else.. MICI/MITITEI w Mustard and beer is also a must another of our national dish.. "Platou taranesc" (rustic platter) .. Sana.. etc... basically you don t need to build up your foods in Romania the flavours are carefully added to the dish, that might take away from its standard trad flavour.. SANA a special type of yoghurt you can find it in the supermarket, salam de biscuiti desert (rolled up dough with biscuits unique flavour).. many of these dishes are unique they might appear similar with other balkans but the flavour is unique..

The bread would be consume like a cornet of ice cream, so as you go down you can rip the bowl it came the soup and eat it ;)), all soup is into the bread, so it wouldn't leak, is just idk a surprising way to eat the soup, we romainians take bread and rip it off, and put small pieces of it sometimes in soup, depends on soup ;)), in general bread in the soup works for beans and green beans soup.
It should have come as a tip from the restaurant, over how you would suppouse to eat it.. , we usually bite the onions, and not eating all slices with what is on a spoon, is a more balanced taste, and onions are sometimes deep in a little bit of salt, or sometimes with some vegetable oil and salt.

I don't like so much wasps, but never panic over wasps, even if they would sting, is not such a big deal, i happened to be sting by them as kid, is better than freaking out from them and making others look at you, they also sting if you aggressive towards them. Most people react weird when they getting surrounded by some insects which sting, is my own view that is important to keep calm, like in any other circumstance.
In last periods of time they made a lot of nests this summer, as it were a too much warm enviroment and they just explode as they had more food on fields which farmers give up to collect or left it as it was a dry season.

Welcome to Romania guys! (even though you're probably not in Romania anymore at the moment). Best romanian food is mici(ground beef with pork on the grill), sarmale(stuffed cabbage rolls) and of course papanasi (sweet fried doughnuts served with sour cream and jam). If you want street food try Luca (Luca is waaaaaay much better than Petru - where you guys bought the covrigi) Enjoy!

Yeah that's true, but we generally don't eat these foods very often, just at major holidays like Christmas, etc. Most of the time we eat more westernized foods like soups , stakes, salads, etc.

Romanians were not under Ottoman occupation. but under permanent attacks for centuries. All those wars the princes of the three Romanian principates fought against the Ottomans were to prevent the occupation. Since all those wars took a huge toll on the Romanians: first of all, human lives, destroyed crops and homes, people uprooting, etc. So, whenever wars were avoidable, a kind of trade off happened: the Romanians had to pay tribute to the Ottomans for being left in peace. The tribute was in form of a yearly amount of gold and/or other precious metal, a certain number of lambs/sheep; grains, etc. So, in order to be able to pay the requested tribute of sheep, the Romanians turned towards pork, poultry. Peace is much better than mutton and pork is not bad at all.
