I have been growing ginger. Galangal will get to be 8 ft tall and does not die down. It is harder to harvest because the new shoots grow on the outside. Tumeric grows in layers in pots and is the easiest to grow. Zingerber grow laterally and not vertically unless you place your ginger sideways. Tumeric will sprout a month after harvest. Zingerber, I harvest after it blooms and dies down Nov-Jan. I keep in in a tray in the shade with a little bit of peat moss for moisture. I plant it in pots again around March-April. It can be harvested in 5 months after it starts growing, but has to be harvested once it blooms or it will just crowd and get a lot smaller.

I plan to try growing some ginger in some window boxes on my front porch. Since the window boxes are rectangular and not too deep there should be room for the rhizomes to spread. If only the piece from the grocery store will begin to sprout then I can get started.

We grow ginger in two dollar window boxes on a large window sill beside our birds' habitat protected by 18" wide galvanized wire 1/4" hardware cloth. We have budgies. They love eating the greens off exactly level with the top of the hardware cloth. Yet we still get almost a year's worth of ginger plus rhizomes to plant right back in. The hardware cloth barricade has a scrap of hose along the top edge as a soft landing spot for the birds.

Did the lighter turmeric taste a bit like green mango? If so you have what they call Mango Ginger, it's actually a kind of turmeric Curcuma amada. Sometimes it ends up being shipped out with regular turmeric. In the Indian market near me, people will pick thru for one or the other. That's how I learned about it. It's mainly used as a pickle in India

I Live in zone 5 which is not a place where any of those plants will not be happy in the winter. I plant them all in 30 gallon totes. I wheel them outside for the summer, then bring them in and grow them under lights for the fall and winter. They thrive either way, and it's great to be able to have fresh anytime I want it. The taste of all three of these is so much better when harvested fresh then when bought at the store.

Thank you. I think some people buy a whole bunch of whatever from the grocery store and pretend they grew it! Lol! Just kidding but thanks for sharing that everything isn’t always a huge pay off

True, but not in the scotching and arid summer in Australia. Many plants get burnt and died! In tropics, high humidity prevents that.

@@colinfoong7650 I'm from Philippines, our Ginger is ok with full sun, I guess Australia is hotter.

Great job, it may be lack of water...they love moist organic soil and not so much the sun. It's been a year since this video was posted, have you made a follow-up? Great video!

Hi Wendi, so glad you showed us your "real" ginger harvest. I live in Zone 10 and even though I planted ginger in a more sunny location I still got the same results as you. Will definitely try again, can't wait to see your new results too.
