- After owning the Audi R8 for 2 years, my biggest disappointment with the car has been the infotainment system. Even though this car is model year 2014, the head unit is from the prehistoric ages. It doesn't support Bluetooth audio, no apple car play, no android auto, no touch screen. And it overall looks super outdated.
I recently came across a seller of an aftermarket head unit that has been specifically designed for the Audi R8. This really intrigued me because it was advertised as pure "Plug & Play" which means there is minimal work with the replacement. It is an 8inch touch screen Android system, with wireless Carplay & Android Auto support.

Hi, amazing this system, I have a Audi R8, and I live in France, how can I have this system ? only USA ? I can have a order in a website and delivery in France ?
I recently bought “ACARNAVI Audi R8 V8 V10 2007-2015 Gen 2 Android 12” for my Audi. Here is my experience:
• There is no manual to the system!
• The system doesn’t support fading the front/rear loudspeakers by hardware despite the is an app where you can alter the center position of the sound
• It seems there is no support (cable) to the subwoofer
• The system can’t saturate the B&O amplifier like the original system -> you can’t play as loud with Audi system
• I it possible to apply a SIM card to the system - I think it only works for navigation - wasn’t able to get to work for phone calls.
• The radio (FM based) was not working (not able to receive any station). The build-in antenna works fine with Audis radio and the supplied adapter cable seems to be ok
• Noise from cars ignition system does appear in the loudspeakers - that problem was solved in car radios 30 years ago
• It is not possible to turn the system off
• There is no support from the seller
I’m not impressed about this China hardware, and I decided to return to the seller (no response) and start a charge back on my credit card. DON’T BY IT!!!
Brilliant! Taking delivery of a 2012 R8 V 10 next week. This stock infotainment system was the only disappointing thing on the test drive. I just resolved to live with it. Then I found your vid! Will probably elect to take it to a shop for install. I am not that brave to be tearing into an R8 unsupervised! Thanks a million times!

Hello, just seen your video, great perseverance. I'd have given up the installation for fear of damaging something. Well done. I have a 2011 Manual V10 RHD. I was thinking of installing a genuine Audi R8 reversing camera - do you think it would work with this unit and retain the dynamic parking lines? I live in NZ but the car is being shipped from the UK.

yo Roger can u not change your steering wheele to the new one as well? and change the cockpit virtual screen to the new one? or does that new ones of the r8 not fit in the old one like this?
Roger. Good video but can you show a photo of the back of the Acarnavi unit with the plugs connected ? I just bought one and can't get it connected as one of the connectors (Rectangular one about 2 cms long) does not fit .
Any videos or pics of how all the wiring is connected? My screen is powering on, but just blank. I am getting sound, music, etc.

I just installed this, but the sound is very quiet compared to stock. Guess I’ll have to try and pull it back out and see if I missed something.

If you have Bang & Olufsen sound system, did you notice a difference (cheaper audio quality for example)? Thx, and wish you the best.
The audio is now much better with Equalizer controls. This system gives you more flexibility.

It is red but not as red as original. It is a lot dimmer.

you can pull it out with some tools. I personally haven’t tried. But near the AC vent on top there is some space to pull it
Hey roger great video. I purchased one of these headunit for my manual transmission R8. Do you know anyone that did the install for a manual transmission. I cannot get the back up camera to work bc I need to tap into the reverse light to get power.

Hi Roger - Now that you’ve had it a few years, how do you like it now?
It’s been great overall. Mine sometimes disconnects from carplay. The unit isn’t perfect but way better than stock.
Does it tend to “bounce” or “rattle” when driving, especially on an uneven road? Would you say it’s very stable, or fairly stable?
No does not rattle at all. It’s locked in there tight

The maps come from your data on your phone
So when you start up the car does it go straight to Carplay or do you always have to hit some buttons? and how long is the boot time into carplay? thx
Goes straight into carplay. Takes about 10s for system to boot up then maybe another 10s for carplay.

No
the microphone on the unit is pretty bad or I might not have connected it correctly.

UPDATE: The manufacturer is now sending DIN removal tools with all new purchases. This head unit is also easily removable just by pulling it out!

How are you enjoying the unit after using it for a while? Any issues?I just received mine today. I was surprised there were no instructions. The manufacturer directed me to your video only.
Only issue is spotify cuts off here and there. I think its a carplay issue.

Roger, did you figure out if you can remove the new unit once you lock the clips back in?
Yes it is removable by using a pry tool but I don’t suspect it’ll be easy. Probably $50 at a professional shop.

@@RogerCui you can see the overlay of the parking sensor when reversing with the upgraded image?
yes the overlay appears when you get close to an object and start beeping
@@RogerCui could you do a full video please! I’m a current owner of an r8 and really need to upgrade the current system for a clear picture for my wife xD I can’t be sure which aftermarket system shows the better camera and retains the parking sensor visuals.

I ordered one recently and it worked good for 1 hour, then started freezing and not working properly and cutting out. Now it turns on after like 10 mins of driving then cuts off. I tried contacting the seller with no response received. Surely a faulty unit. Does anyone have any long term use out of these head units ?

oh it’s a different app on the Gen 2. Contact your seller they can help. The app should already be installed in the system.

I ordered this unit....they sent the wrong model and the "carbon fiber" wrapping was damaged. Many attempts to return the unit has been met with radio silence (possibly the hard lockdown in Shangai has something to do with it) . My installer also commented the unit was of inferior quality just by the "feel" alone. I ended up ordering the Kenwood unit.
Are you sure you ordered the right unit? Go through the link in my description. I don’t think they even have a carbon fiber option. U bought from another company.

The "carbon fiber" is in quotes....it s a film designed to look like carbon fiber. The unit was purchased from ACARNAVI
