This is the first video introduction to Mandarin that convinced that I could learn it after a few years of practice.
All other introductions I saw before discouraged me after a minute, their introduction made Chinese seemed too hard for me to learn. I was seriously thinking that I could never learn to pronounce it.
I must praise you for very detailed explanations, great instructions (with clear instructions on screen) and most importantly very clear pronunciation by multiple native speakers. Usually, Mandarin sounds incomprehensible to us European because it is a tonal language and pronunciation is something completely different than anything we are used to. However, this video is very detailed and I've already learned a lot from it. Thank you.

This is a very helpful video ; I particularly like the way you say it slowly to start so we can get hold of the sounds correctly. I also appreciate the examples that follow using natural delivery. However . . it has given me an opportunity to test something I have suspected : that most of the time the rules for tones are not followed. Some examples : 'shào' is always spoken at a lower pitch than the preceding character 'jiè' ; 'xia' is not spoken with a fourth tone from high to low ; indeed it sometimes sounds more like a second tone from low to high ; and 'zì' is also never given a fourth tone. What I have realised is that only some tones are actually pronounced in normal Chinese speaking, but you have to find out for yourself which ones these are, and that means that every phrase and sentence has to be individually learned. I would welcome any comments.
