  • This is a follow up of my faulty DM858E DCV autorange topic video.
    I have sent my old meter 2 months earlier to Rigol. This video shows the result of it (+ upgrade to non-E). The new model has Hardware version 1.01 !!! (while still using the current 1.00.00.20 SW)
    Update : :SYSTEM:CFGVER 1 was applied already on this meter when received - but no info from Rigol whatsoever

    Hello Marcel,
    Great news about your new DM858 in version 1.01. Most of the problems have now been solved. Hypotheses of a software update to solve the problem seem lost since you're still in 1.00.00.20. In short, I'm not sure that all retailers will agree to return the product to Rigol for an upgrade. Most will turn a deaf ear unless Rigol makes the approach to its distributors. We'll see...
    In the meantime, thank you for this long-awaited video and good luck with your further investigations into your new DM858. Best regards.

      Hello Frank, I am afraid that you are right regarding deaf ears. Are you trying to get a HW 1.01 also via your distributor. I hope you will succeed if you want to take the effort. In my case it took totally 2 months (including an owned trigged swap from E to non-E). Kind regards, Marcel

    Good evening, has the slowness in slow mode been improved? then do a test asking for the PFC sector of a power supply, my old DM 858 which corrupted the firmware and I had to return it to the seller, when measuring a voltage of 400v on the PFC capacitor in automatic scale a large spark came out from the tip.

    • @marcelmostert3081
      @marcelmostert3081  18 дней назад

      Hello, I didn't notice a faster "slow" mode. I guess nothing has changed there. About the 400volt: Do I get it right that you put the DMM in DVC autorange and then you start to measure 400V DC. Did it display 400V or was the meter directly defect? (after the sparc) It should be capable up to 1000V if I look to the specifications. Did you receive a new DM858 from the supplier?

      @@marcelmostert3081 If you leave the multimeter on automatic scale and directly measure 400v, a spark will come out of the tip when the multimeter changes from the 1v scale upwards, this was a defect that also occurred in mine, I chose to return the amount paid and bought a hantek hdm3065b , because in addition to the dm858's bugs, I didn't like the slowness and the fact that when I put it in medium or fast mode, it turns into a 4-digit multimeter.

    • @marcelmostert3081
      @marcelmostert3081  18 дней назад

      Correct, in medium/Fast one digit is removed. With your spark out of the tip I will check this also. Anyway, do you like the 6.5 digits hantek meter - also in the different measurement speeds? Any bugs there?

      Good evening, I think I found the root cause of your corrupted DM858. It appears that the impedance is very low for a short duration (and strangely enough how higher the DC, how lower the impedance). I measured 1500 ohm at 56-66Volt. But with 400 DC, I don't know, but I guess enough to generate sparks....and destroy your multimeter. This situation of low duration is only for around 150-220ms and occurs when the autorange has to scale up from

    Hi, can you let me know which supplier you used? The one I used in Great Britain is not really keen on replacing it with new hardware. They sent me some config to run and it seems to solve the dcv measurement issue. The SCPI command is :SYSTEM:CFGVER? but if it does not show 1, it is :SYSTEM:CFGVER 1. Rigol says it "changes the DC voltage 100mV and 1V gear configuration".

      I have bought the DM858 at Eleshop in NL. And I know that they returned my old device to Rigol Germany (on request of Rigol DE after my initial complaint in April). Then there was a long time silence, and finally they intent to ship a HW1.0.1 version as result (E). But they have never confirmed that the problem was solved or whatsoever. No info. But I checked last week after receiving my DM858 and made a video of the result. So I assume HW 1.0.1 is the solution since the SW is still the same (1.00.00.20). BTW: I just enter :SYSTEM:CFGVER? and the result is 1. I assume the config file you received from your supplier didn't work? I didn't know that this could potentially solve the DCV autorange issue.

      @@marcelmostert3081 I had the same config update suggested to me by my supplier here in the UK, and it has in fact resolved the issue with the meter not correctly showing voltages above 32v or so.

      @@richardstaz721 Thank you very much for this information from Rigol. It seems to work on my DM858. Above 32V the display is fine. It would be nice if Rigol could share this with all his customers from his websites...

      Hi, yes this solves dcv issue but the multimeter is still draining current so it is not a full solution

      @@dragon_v I see no appreciable current drain, it measures some 3µA and is the same whether using a Fluke or the Rigol. The fix looks fine to me.

    А в чём обновление заключается ? Ток как подпрыгивал в автоматическом режиме так и подпрыгивает . Смотрите внимательно на блок питания , при переключении с 0,1в на 33в . 26мА это достаточно много что бы пожечь чувствительную к нагрузкам цепь .

    This thing front end is built around HY3131 chip which is used in 50USD handheld multimeters. There is like 4 details in it HY3131 + Resistive divider network + Relays, nothing else. Fair price for this device would be 100USD.

    • @marcelmostert3081
      @marcelmostert3081  18 дней назад

      Interesting info. HY3131 has 50K count according to their datasheet, while DM858 and DM858E has 120K count. Do have some more info about your claim? I would expect that the ADC of the DM858 is also different then the DM858E. I am not planning to do a teardown due to warranty, but I love to see such video.
