That's why I can't drop more than a few hundred on a device from ali. I'd lose my mind if it had no screen protector on it. I've been burned from ali express so many times on soldering stations that my next is going to be a fancy jbc one. I'm a rigol fan but they need to tighten up their qa. I have the mso5354 with the logic analyzer and diff probes. I've yet to use the la on my scope and no one had the awesome reproductions online at the time.

@marcelmostert3081 yeah I seen it. I bought the mso5354 with logic probes and differential probes after a hurricane destroyed most of my house. I regret it now. My 2 channel siglent before it was fine. I'm trying to sell it now, I haven't had alot of time to use it lately due to medical reasons and I use my tektronix tds2002c more often anyway haha. I'd like to have the same old tektronix scope w5aew has but the canada dollar is weak and it rarely goes below 2500usd plus 15 percent tax and whatever heinous value canada customs likes to add. Our federal customs is as draconian as your vat only my government doesn't use euphemisms or some superfluous reason why it's better. It's pay or we keep it and auction it off. Plus American sellers inflate shipping fees as a way to make extra money. Like how can a 2.5kusd prs guitar and 30 dollar cht nozzle from the slice engineering website cost the same to ship.. I trade test gear with a friend in the southern states and shipping is usually quite cheap.

Good evening, I think I found the root cause of your corrupted DM858. It appears that the impedance is very low for a short duration (and strangely enough how higher the DC, how lower the impedance). I measured 1500 ohm at 56-66Volt. But with 400 DC, I don't know, but I guess enough to generate sparks....and destroy your multimeter. This situation of low duration is only for around 150-220ms and occurs when the autorange has to scale up from <1.2 Volt to the higher ranges. I know you have meanwhile another multimeter of hantek. ruclips.net/video/yJc4WJnmnNA/видео.html

They were planning to ship it me, but I asked if I could upgrade it to a DM858 non-E version, assuming it would contain HW 1.01 and that it would fixed the DCV autorange failure. I didn't got a clear confirmation about that - except the price difference bill for the non-E version, that was clear :-) . So I am little excited for tomorrow.

I’ve noticed another odd thing about the meter, when measuring ohms. In many cases the autoranging shows values as a decimal of the range, ie 330 ohms is displayed as 0.325K or 270K is displayed as 0.268 Mohms. Switching from Auto to a manual range doesn’t work as an Overload message is displayed for what should be the correct range. It’s not incorrect but not as convenient to read as 330 ohms or 268K ohms, as my Fluke meter displays. A poor design decision. I hope you’re having better luck with your replacement meter.

Hello Frank, thanks for link. Meanwhile I had an update from my supplier (Eleshop). They received the 858E back from Rigol Germany and they did some test at the location of Eleshop. But they didnot check the DCV autorange test. They sent some picture where I saw Hardware Version 1.01 (so not 1.00). I was happy and I thought this might be solving the DCV autorange problem. As this was another 858E device from Rigol Germany (different serial number then my original one) I ask them if it was possible to change it to a 858 (without E) prior sending the 858E back to me. That was possible after paying the price difference. But now I am waiting for the 858 because it was not in stock. I asked them if the 858 has also HW 1.01. They were saying it will be the newest HW. Let see what it will be. Hopefully I will get the 858 end next week (my guess). Best regards

I recently bought a rigol dm858, after 4 days of use, its firmware corrupted in normal use, I was unable to recover the firmware and had to return it, the errors I managed to diagnose. 1st in automatic scale does not measure voltages between 32v and 40v, generating a consumption of 24ma. 2nd In automatic scale, if measuring high DC voltages in a PFC circuit, it generates a strong signal on the test tip. 3rd in slow mode the multimeter is extremely slow. The first two errors occur due to the change of scale from 1v to 10v where a relay is activated, this activation generates consumption. After 3 days of use, the multimeter showed a defect measuring 3Mohms and on the diode scale it showed a drop of 1,100v even without the tips connected, an internal NPN transistor in the multimeter leaked, its location is Q1, I opened the multimeter with authorization from the supplier Due to the warranty, I replaced the transistor and the defect was resolved, however, the next day, when using the math function and pressing the OK button, the multimeter system corrupted and I returned it. I recorded all these bugs that occurred, unfortunately the problem is hardware and not software. comprei um rigol dm858 recentemente, com 4 dias de uso a firmware dele corrompeu em uso normal, não consegui recuperar a firmware e tive que devolver, os erros que consegui diagnosticar.

This is not great from a brand like this. What I also find "interesting" is that these newer models (over the DM3058[E]) the counts are lower. This seems to be a trend with Rigol? the DM3055 model had 480.000 counts, the later 3058 240.000 (or at least aound 200.000 counts) and now this latest model only 120.000. This fact alone is a big turn off for me already.

Hello Marcel. I've been looking forward to your second video. I received my DG922 Pro yesterday and tested it last night. The first noticeable change is that the USB-C power connector has a side-pressure locking clip. This should undoubtedly help to relieve the mechanical stress on the soldered joints of the USB-C socket when the generator is often moved (mounted on a VESA mount, for example). Do you have a new type of USB-C connector on your USB-C power supply? Apart from a bug when my generator started up for the second time, with all the buttons on the front panel and on the touchscreen locking up, after rebooting everything was back to normal. I've restarted it several times and I haven't noticed this problem. The fan only kicks in after several long minutes of use, especially when I turn up the frequency. It's a shame, as it's noisier than the one on my DHO924S oscilloscope. As for the B type, which is unavailable when using the frequency meter function, this was already the case with their previous DG2072 model, which a French youtuber had mentioned in the past: ruclips.net/video/tm_VqCWMY34/видео.html . And as with the old DG20 generation, it's a shame that the frequency meter's voltage input dynamic range (5V) isn't greater. Thanks to your video I discovered how to use the harmonic function with the prefix X followed by 1 and 0. Really cool. I'm discovering the PDF documentation as I go along and your explanations are really useful. Thanks to your video, I've discovered how to use the harmonic function with the X prefix followed by 1 and 0. Really cool. I'm discovering the Rigol PDF documentation as I go along and your explanations are an excellent support. I'm also very interested in the auxiliary outputs at the rear, as there's also the possibility of generating a marker when using the SWEEP function. For me, this is essential when you want to quickly assess the bandwidth of a device. Not yet tested... The DG2072 generator can also generate a DUAL TONE signal and an RS232 sequence. I don't know if the DG822 Pro and its variants allow this. I haven't had the time to delve into all the waveforms yet. I see you haven't got your DM858E multimeter back yet. Let's hope they have a solution for you... Until your next video tests, I wish you an excellent discovery with your DG822 Pro.

Hello Frank. Thanks for you comments - I appreciate your feedback very much! Also congratulation with the DG922 Pro. I really nice to have 200Mhz. In my case was wondering if some upgrade options are existing to 50Mhz, but I could not find it. Only an option for more memory. Regarding the USB-C, I could not find a side-pressure locking clips (I think it is the same as DM858E - which is still in "repair" :-). It make a lot of sense indeed to reduce the mechanical stress. In my case, everything is on the bench a little static. The topic related to CH2 and Freq Counter is maybe not a big deal. I have the same restriction on my Feeltech FY6900. But as the datasheet states "independant" I understand now they only meant a own front connector in stead of sharing a single CH2/Counter BNC. Now also understand that old model has the same restriction. I was wondering how this works with Siglent... The Fan, yes.... this is really nasty. The sound it starting to produce after a few minutes is really loud. I had assumed that the loudness of the fan would be same as DHO800/900 series oscilloscope as it using the same form factor. But I learn from you that is not the case. Also my DHO1074 is not quiet. But the DG is indeed much louder. Maybe I will change fan in the future. I have still to checka lot and verify - e.g. triggers - 10Mhz connection, and the ARB functions etc. Meanwhile, I could not find an import/export function for ARB - maybe I have overlooked this. I also didn't see the DualTone/RS232 either. I will continue with some more video's after some DG exploration. If I have received my DM858E back from Rigol I will immediately share the results. Thanks again Frank, and enjoy with your new RG922Pro!

@@marcelmostert3081 Hello Marcel. Thank you for your reply. Regarding the upgrades of your DG822 Pro to 50MHz, the PDF documentation doesn't mention it and no information on the Rigol website. I looked on the internet, but couldn't find anything like you. In fact, like you, I've just upgraded to more 32M memory from the Rigol site. This 25MHz limitation should be able to be modified in order to move upmarket. To be seen in a few months... For the problem of the clock being synchronized to the Chinese time zone, I simply disconnected the DG922 Pro from my Ethernet network. This keeps it on the right time and I don't use remote control via the network. However, given that the OS runs on Android, Rigol's engineers could add a time zone selection option to the DGxxx Pro's settings. As for the DG922 Pro's fan being louder than on my DHO924S, here's a plausible explanation. RUclipsur Dave from EEVblog explained that the fan placed in his DHO814 was powered by the oscilloscope with a voltage of 8V instead of 12V (fan manufacturer's reference 12V - 0.14A). As the fan is not running at maximum speed, noise is much lower on the oscilloscope, even though it must generate sufficient airflow to keep the temperature within acceptable margins. He explains it here: ruclips.net/video/pwS6HnM9PDo/видео.html However, given the noise generated by my DG922 Pro after 5 minutes of warm-up, it could be that Rigol is powering the generator fan at 12V at maximum speed. As this DGxxx Pro product is very recent, I have no idea of the internal structure of the PCB. From what I can gather, there are three FPGAs (AFG, AWG and Counter) and no doubt a Rockchip processor. All this must be heating up nicely, and probably a lot more than on our oscilloscope with the same form factor. Dave, a great fan of opening measuring instruments, will soon let us know, I hope! For the locking clips on the USB-C power supply, I've taken several photos that can be downloaded from this link. If you're interested, I've put together a ZIP file of my photos of my phone: www.grosfichiers.com/2e45jrkdBc5 Here you can see my two USB-C power adapters, the one for my oscilloscope with the classic USB-C connector and the one for the function generator with a USB-C connector featuring a locking system with the Rigol brand name. As for the restriction on the CH2 and Counter frequency meter, I watched a video on the Siglent SDG1032x generator and apart from its 200MHz frequency limitation of the Counter input positioned at the rear of the device, the RUclipsur doesn't mention any restriction on one of the CH1 or CH2 inputs. Link to this video in French: ruclips.net/video/L-9BEYJ3ZPw/видео.html I found and successfully tested the Dual Tone function, which works perfectly. The FFT analysis gives exactly the expected spectrum, and the proposed settings are very interesting. On the other hand, I've looked at the PDF documentation in detail and there's no support for the RS232 protocol, unlike Rigol's previous DG2000 generator model produced in 2021. A great pity... ue Rigol. Like you, I haven't found an import/export function for ARB arbitrary functions. The documentation doesn't refer to it, and I don't think it's possible. Again, this is a pity, even if the number of ARB functions is very large. What's more, a PC signal editor would have been perfect, as with the FeelTech FY6900 - 60MHz which I also own and still use, even if it remains rather limited. The generator's 10MHz connection operates correctly at the output. It delivers a square-wave signal of approximately VPP=3.28V without loading this 50-ohm output. I tested the trigger in Sweep mode to measure the bandwidth of my oscilloscope. To do this, the generator's rear BNC "CH1 AUX IN/OUT" is connected to input 2 of my oscilloscope (oscillo trigger active on input 2). Channel 1 of the oscilloscope displays the sinusoidal signal in Sweep mode, evolving in frequency between a minimum and maximum value, in this case 200MHz. However, I found that the frequency setting of the "Mark Freq" marker behaved a little strangely! Let me explain. From Sweep mode, after setting the frequency excursion of the sine wave, I select the "Channel" menu at the bottom of the screen. From this menu, I set "Sync : On", "Mark: On" and enter the frequency of my marker in "Mark Freq" using the keyboard or touchscreen. Thus, I can see on channel 2 of the oscilloscope (connected to CH1 AUX IN/OUT of the generator) a rectangular signal whose rising edge is in sync with the start frequency and a falling edge with the stop frequency of the Sweep mode. To modify the position of the marker's falling edge, I select a digit in "Mark Freq" (e.g. digit "1" in the "Mark Freq: 100.000,000,000,000MHz" display). I can decrease the frequency by turning the large circular knob on the front of the generator. But I can't increase the frequency with the same big knob!? To increase the frequency, I have no choice but to enter a higher value in "Mark Freq" using the physical keyboard or touchscreen. The use of this large circular knob in either direction would have been judicious. This choice is rather curious and not very practical in use. To activate PWM modulation, the documentation indicates that a "Pulse" waveform must first be selected. Rigol could have automated this specificity instead of graying out the PWM selection in the drop-down menu. Finally, I quibble. The Seq function also works very well. I just did a test with 4 waveforms chained one after the other of different periods. It's really excellent and quite unusual. As for modulations, I only tested AM modulation. The FFT was exactly what I expected. I still have to test the other modulations, the frequency counter with the +/-5V maximum amplitude restriction, screen saving on external storage media, etc... To date, I'm delighted with my new generator, even if it does have a few oversights. Thanks for the tests and videos. A valuable source of information that makes it easier to master this device with concrete examples. Looking forward to the return of your DM858E, I wish you all the best with your DG822 Pro, and good luck with your video production and editing.

Hello Frank, thanks also for your reply. I missed it, due to some wrong YT comment filtering which apparently, I had active. Here my late feedback. Yes, I know that there is no 50Mhz option for me, but I would argue - the HW is probably the same (within the DG800 range). But let’s see, I am not really looking it for time being... Indeed, the clock works correct if you not connect it to the Internet. It is the same I think with the DM858(E). Oke, I was thinking - because of the same formfactor your DHO924S would make the same noise as the DG8xx or DG9xx. But it is even louder. For me it is loudest device I have - a shame! Thanks for the Dave Link BTW. Indeed, I hope Dave want to do a tear down. I don’t do it because of the warranty. Thanks also for the USB foto’s. I didn’t have those, and indeed it looks better against stress! I thought the DG8xx/9xx would be the same in this perspective - bit it is not. My DG822Pro I bought it via Aliexpress and I found my power adaptor connector 230V AC a little weird for the EU. So I am wondering if the DG8xx bought via an EU reseller it might as yours (or it is because of the more expensive DG9xx range?) Meanwhile I have seen indeed that the use of the Counter input is coming often with cost of disabling the CH 2 (at least at Rigol, I am not sure with Siglent). Also want I missed is the COUNT function. My FeelTech FY6900 it is implemented. I will show it maybe in a later video. I test some Burst functions, which works fine. I did some test this weekend with some triggers (+output), and it looks OK sofar. The 10Mhz, good point, I will test it together with my DH1074 (has also 10 Mhz). I will also test (next weekend?) youre Sweep procedure - incl Mark Freq change with the big knob! I will let you know (or via video) There a still more things to explore with the DG. More then with the DMM 😊 (which I still didn’t receive back yet from Rigol) Thanks again for your comments. It is very useful. I might use it in one of my follow up YT video. Meanwhile, have fun with you new DG922Pro!

@@marcelmostert3081 Hello Marcel. Thank you also for your response. I posted this message on Thursday, but it doesn't appear on RUclips, or maybe it was me who made a mistake. So I'm reposting this message this Sunday. It was a busy week and I didn't continue my tests on the DG900. I didn't even turn it on! I agree with you, the frequency limitation at 25MHz is only purely software and it must be possible to unleash this generator at 50MHz or perhaps more up to 200MHz? However, these software modifications lead to the loss of product warranty it seems to me. In terms of fan noise, the DG8xx/DG9xx are indeed very noisy. Fortunately the DM858(E) doesn't have one, phew! Perhaps future hardware versions of these models will have improvements at this level... For my part I have version 1 of the hardware. Regarding the USB connector, I found a post from someone with this new USB-C connector on EEVBlog. Perhaps Rigol did not yet have the new mains power versions to deliver the first models of its new range (oscilloscope, multimeter and function generator). Pure hypothesis... Here is a photo of the DG8xx/DG9xx PCB: www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/rigol-just-launch-its-new-function-generator-dg800pro-900pro/?action=dlattach;attach=2082416;image Here is a photo of the DM858(E) PCB: www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/rigol-just-launch-its-new-function-generator-dg800pro-900pro/?action=dlattach;attach=2082422;image Contrary to what I thought, there is no longer a processor from Rockchip for these two models (DGxxx and DMxxx) unlike the DHO8xx/DHO9xx oscilloscope. A daughter card brings together a new processor and associated RAM and other circuitry. Take your time to test all the features of the generator and to make the next video. Alternatively, I would suggest a SDM3055 of Siglent, but if Siglent is difficult to find, then why not this Rigol. I will do make an update of the YTvideo of the Rigol after they return my device. Maybe you can wait?

@@marcelmostert3081thank you. I'll be waiting for your updates. I’ve been using the DHO804 for six months now and I’m satisfied with almost everything (there are a couple of bugs, I couldn’t reproduce them), so this form factor is convenient for me.

Yes indeed, the SDM3055 was also on my shortlist. I couldn't find a RUclips review for the Rigol at that time. So it was a educated risk :( Question: Can your SDM3055 also displaying a negative Overload. E.g. " - OVERLOAD" and "+ OVERLOAD" ? As my Rigol is displaying always "OVERLOAD" for both cases the corresponding Trend Chart is wrong. But I am curious to see how other brands handling that situation.

Hello and thank you for this latest video on the problems with the DM858E and DM858 models. I've just done the same test with my DM858 and I still get the same bug when I'm on the 1 volt gauge in manual mode. I haven't had time to look at the clock problem. As for the system version, apart from the different serial number and calibration date (2021-01-18 for mine), all other parameters are identical to yours. Looking forward to the return of your DM858E from Germany after Rigol has inspected the problem. We still believe!

Hi Frank, thanks for confirming the same 1 V bug and other parameter settings. As soon I have my DM858E back I will retest and publish a RUclips video of it. I hope also that Rigol is working on the other SW bugs meanwhile.....

The behavior during the negative overload, even though it's a gross problem and shouldn't have been allowed to pass through the product engineering, doesn't look like a softare problem, but rather to the input analog front end, most prticularly the input op-amp. What it shows so clearly in the waveform and in the bargraph as well, resembles A LOT what is known as Phase Reversal, which happens to certain op-amps (especially FET input op-amps) when one of its inputs is pushed past the op-amps input common mode voltage range

Thanks for the answer. I am not sure, but I thought that Siglent Bench Multimeters SDM30XX does have a negative Overload indicator. It seems that Rigol is taking a different design approach. If this not solvable via a Software update then I wonder if Rigol will come with a future hardware update. I will watch this closely.

@@marcelmostert3081 Well, I can't be 100% sure, that it's an Op-Amp phase reversal effect, or some software bug. It just seems soooo much like phase reversal that it would be too much of a coincidence if it's not, and instead would be a software bug that behaves exactly like Op-Amp phase reversal. Anyway, if it's phase reversal, it can be remediated by increasing the power supply rail that the input voltage is getting too close, and clamping the input voltage before it reaches the point of causing phase reversal. Or changing the Op-Amp altogether, for onde that doesn't exhibit this quirk.

Good evening, I think I found the root cause of your corrupted DM858E. It appears that the impedance is very low for a short duration (and strangely enough how higher the DC, how lower the impedance). I measured 1500 ohm at 56-66Volt. But with 380 DC, I don't know, but I guess it destroys your multimeter. This situation of low duration is only for around 150-220ms and occurs when the auto-range has to scale up from <1.2 Volt to the higher ranges. ruclips.net/video/yJc4WJnmnNA/видео.html
