I have been playing for 56 years. At present I'm playing with a large jazz band (bop tunes). I'm 71 and have been studying jazz for 20 years or so. I discovered Barry a 1 1/2 years ago and was struggling to converting his info from piano to guitar. With your videos I'm learning to use his knowledge and make it my own. I owe you so much. Thankyou Amigo...
@@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616 My bucket list is to travel to NY and set in on some of Barry's classes. Getting the basics and applying the rules to create my own improvised movements. The race between the mind and the fingers. Barry has all my respect...
I can play The Whole Tone Scale up/down, but I never practiced it any other way as I didn't know what to do with it...until now. Those lines are beautiful, Chris! I can't wait to explore!
The whole tone scale has always eluded me. Barry helped me understand it is just the parents of the diminished, and your playing it on a guitar is helping me finally realize how it can be used musically. Thanks as always.
Great lesson Chris - I haven’t used wholetone stuff much, but I’m inspired to try these ideas out! Also I hear Pasquale Grasso using these sounds quite a lot.
You’re so good at conveying these concept as taught by Barry Harris. Have you ever considered taking on students of your own?(Assuming you haven’t already) I’d love to take a Skype lesson or 2 from you.
Hey I got 1 questions: Is there a rule with the other hole tone scale. (using the second part of the chromatic scale to go somewhere else.) Thank you for dropping the knowledge!
Wow, I've only seen about 6 of these episodes so far, but each one is terrific. Does Barry address the melodic minor scale in his classes? I noticed that removing one note from the Whole tone scale can produce an interesting melodic minor Pentatonic Scale. Is there also an episode on Pentatonic scales?
When discussing minor, Barry usually talks about the Minor sixth diminished scale. That includes the melodic minor notes and Harmonic minor notes. He does talk about Harmonic minor sometimes. I'm not sure if you've seen this episode but maybe you'll enjoy it. ruclips.net/video/S1gGP4PCrnE/видео.html
Hey Mr. Things I've Learned from Barry Harris--did you know that you inspired a study group at JazzGuitar.be? Good stuff. Anyway, whole tone vocabulary is something I've always been lacking. For some reason, diminished vocabulary seems to come easier to me. Barry actually went over that whole tone harmonic pattern when I went to his Piano class in NYC. Can you apply Barry's half step rules to the whole tone scale?
Somebody else told me about the study group. That is exactly the reason I started this channel. Really happy to hear about it. It inspires me to make more and better videos. Barry's method is so wonderful, it should be shared with everyone. The more that are talking about his method, the better. I've never applied his half step rules to the whole tone scale. I'd have to think about it. Sounds interesting though. Thanks for your input. Keep the ideas coming.
It always makes me sad that whole tone gets a bad rep. It can totally be really pretty and used in something like a ballad. It's not just for dreamland music.
Man when I hear the example.I couldnt help smile. know the sound for a real time
Man, I've got to start at ep 1 and catch up - might take a couple years :D
Nonsense. You pick things up super fast.
Chris your teaching is GOLD. I have spent my Christmas 2021 watching your videos. What a gift they are....
Thank you Maury. Merry Christmas brother.
I'm so lifting that notecinbetween the whole tone lick. Lol. Great video dude.
This is an awesome channel!
Thank you Wayne. Please share with your musician friends.
yes, it is indeed!

Wonderful to hear Jim. You're very welcome. It's all Barry's method so he really deserves the credit.
Please keep me updated on your progress.

Thanks James. I'm still exploring.
This is gold, like all your videos,...so much appreciated.....you have the most important channel on you tube!

Whole tone movement is nice! I dig it!
Great lesson Chris - I haven’t used wholetone stuff much, but I’m inspired to try these ideas out! Also I hear Pasquale Grasso using these sounds quite a lot.
Thanks grahambop. Art Tatum, Bud Powell and Barry use them a lot.
Pretty lines. Compliments
Thanks Alessandro. Barry's method is really beautiful.
Fantastic lesson. Another yt gem.
That Bud Powell lick is great, thanks!
You're welcome. Barry talks about Bud all the time.
@@thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616 i'm sure i'm not the only one who would like to hear about anything Barry said about Bud.

Is the 7b5 Dim Scale used for a different purpose? Like Altered Dominants or Tritones etc
i think it sounds beautiful but i didnt understand the use of whole tone scale on the Em7 of body and soul. thanks for sharing anyways

I guess it resolves to the other six tonics. I've never thought about it. I'm not aware of how Barry talks about it.

All the great players use it.
