Ah crap... well that sucks because it looked like things were getting better. What happened is that there was a bunch of large parties in the orientation week around helsinki (different univerisities) and a bunch of students got infected. This made most of the unis in helsinki to pull back and close up again... Im actually already back in helsinki but im just trying to keep isolated as much as possible. I have some close relatives and friends who are in the risk groups so i dont want to take any chances. So we have to set up a meetup a bit later in when things calm down again.

Im glad if this helped! So I do mention those type of jobs at the end of the video. You can definitely apply for these kind of jobs and they might even be the best ones at the beginning of your studies. However, theres nothing that much to them. Some service sector jobs require Finnish language skills, some dont. The most problematic jobs are those where you handle food because you need to have a hygiene certificate in order to do those jobs. The only tip for applying for these jobs is to simply update and print out your cv, put on some walking shoes and dress accordingly and start walking into every single store, bard, restaurant and other place where you could get these jobs, introduce yourself (briefly) and ask whether or not they might have something open. There are a few recruitment sites that have these kind of jobs, but the problem is that most of these job ads are written in Finnish. So your best bet is to look for "hidden jobs" by following the aforementioned steps.

Oh dude, Finland has a massive shortage of talented IT people! There are estimates that we have an immediate need for over 10.000 developers around the country and this number is growing by the thousands each year. This means that for multiple years, the Finnish job market has experienced something that we call the _employees market_ meaning that highly talented and experience software developers have been pretty much able to decide who they want to work for and for what kind of a salary. Software developers that know what they are doing are pretty much guaranteed to get a job in Finland. In addition, i would like to remind you that Finland is the land of telecom and networking and e.g. Nokia is a Finnish company. They are nowadays no longer manufacturing phones but rather fully focusing on networking technologies including 5G. So im 100% sure that we would have use for your talents here. I hope you dont mind me asking about your background. Do you have a bachelor's degree or have you also already done a master's?

🤦♂️ apologies, my bad. Your background sounds really interesting and i definitely see a lot of opportunities for you in Finland. While working for a recruitment company, i actually got to work with multiple customers that focused on either digital or physical security systems. These kind of companies are constantly looking for new talents and since their market is pretty niche (not the most common path for students to take), they were always interested in people who had work experience in the field.

Hey and thanks so much for the important question! I absolutely get where you are coming from and i hope that this gets easier over time. So we Finns are usually a bit 'reserved' which means that it takes quite a lot of time to make friends of us. This takes a lot of time and effort and the current corona situation is definitely not helping with the situation especially since most student parties have been cancelled. This is a bit of a cliche but alcohol does help us get to know you because it gets most Finns to open up a bit more. This is why student parties and activities are so important for making friends in school. Another really good way to get to know either local or other international students is by participating in student clubs and volunteering in different student activities. These are not only fun things to do but you also get to know a lot of cool people and you get to hang out with them through these activities. So i would definitely recommend that you look for interesting student clubs or associations in your school and make sure to attend their info evenings or open meetings when they are arranged. Early autumn is the best time for this because most clubs are looking for new members right now. I dont really know what to say about these habit groups because this is a new term for me, but in terms of getting to know new people, i would definitely recommend being as active in your local student community as possible 👍. One more thing, as i mentioned in the video, i recently set up a Discord server for people interested in studying and building ones career in Finland. Since all members are international students who are either already in Finland or planning on coming here, the server could be a great place to get to know other international students who are in the same situation. Oh dude, i will definitely make a video about this, but i just have to say that you are worrying about nothing. Software development is the hottest field in finland right now and finland has a deficit of tens of thosands of competent developers. The problem is so big atm that many talented developers are basically able to dictate their salaries and choose the companies they want to work for. Basically if someone asked me about what field to study in terms of good employment opportunities and salaries, i would say software development before you could finish your sentence 😅. If you want a couple of tips, we have a lack especially in cloud computing and mobile development. Really good iOS developers are paid like top management level salaries because iOS isnt taught at any school, instead all of the good iOS devs have taught it to themselves (on top of having a master's).
Hey Oliver! a question out of context here - Is it okay to cancel an application and apply again in a short while to HOAS? Hey Rupesh! So Hoas has a process for people whos move to Finland has been or will be postponed by the current situation. I cant directly tell you how this is handled but i was informed to let anyone in this kind of a situation to contact Hoas customer support directly. OliverR Hey! I talked with HOAS regarding this and they advised me to cancel the current application and apply for a new one in a while once I have an idea of when I might actually be coming there. They told me to keep updating the application at least once a month so that they could help in finding an accommodation for me. They are really helpful!

So if you have a bachelor's degree you should definitely go for a master's. We dont really do diplomas or e.g. MBA's in Finland. Master's programmes in Finland are expensive for on European Union citizens, but you can also apply for a scholarship to cover those costs. What i recommend is that you first check out these two videos and then let me know if you have further questions about those topics. After that we can start looking at potential schools and ways to apply. Hey Amir. I already posted an answer to this question in another videos but ill copy and paste it here if anyone else stumbles upon this question. So the simple answer to this question is "Yes, if you have the skills that these companies are looking for." The more complicated and technical answer is that yes, you can definitely get hired by these companies as a student at Aalto university. However, this has nothing to do with your school or the year you are in. In Finland companies dont really care what schools you are going to or what year you are in. They only care about your skills and whether or not you can fulfil their needs. Also, companies are not allowed to limit job ads to people who are in a specific year or from a specific school (unless you work in a regulated field like in health care where you need x amount of study credits to get certified to specific jobs). Because whether or not you can get hired by these companies has nothing to do with your school or year, it is all about your skills. So now the question is, do people usually have the necessary skills to work for these companies in their second year at university? My honest opinion is that most people dont. Some do but i think those people are exceptions. You have to consider that these companies are really popular and they get a lot of applicants. This means that the competition is very high. Thus, the companies have the ability to choose the best people AND because they cant discriminate those who are a year ahead or behind in school, they will only focus on your skills and talent (i know, im repeating myself). If you want to work for these big tech companies and get a job there early in your studies, you have to have a really solid educational background (high GPA to separate you from other applicants) and you have to have some kind of special skills (e.g. knowing some rare coding languages or frameworks that most people dont) that makes you special. However, the best way to separate yourself from the pack in the early stages of your studies is to either have prior relevant work experience OR by having done some really interesting projects (could be through hobbies or e.g. through volunteering) where you have achieved excellent and measurable results. Hopefully this gives you a bit of context and a few trick that you can use 👍
@@amiraziz2479 I have absolutely no idea of the salary levels in the US and in Sweden. However, what i would say is that you should not compare the salaries side by side because they do not tell you the whole picture in terms of quality of living. E.g. even if you made more money per month in the US, you have to consider that the US has an immensely expensive health care system and housing can be crazy expensive depending on the city. On the other hand, Finland has higher taxes. So its all about the context and looking blindly at the salary level can be very deceiving.

Ciao Angelo and thanks for the great question. I actually have a few videos coming up where interview experienced recruiters about this topic. Those videos will give you a lot of perspective to this issue because its not a fully black and white question. So make sure to be subscribed and have all notifications turned on so that you dont miss those interviews when i get them online 🙂. Anyway, while you are waiting for those interviews to come online, the simple answer to this question is that some part-time jobs do require Finnish but some dont. A good rule of thumb is that jobs that require you to be in direct contact with customers AND where you need to help customers make purchasing decisions do most often require at least some Finnish skills. However, customer service jobs where the customer interaction isnt that deep might not require you to speak Finnish at all. Let me give you two examples: 1. You are a sales clerk at a clothing store. Your job is not only to help with the cash register but to also help customers to choose their outfits, recommend products and help them find the right sizes, colors etc.. While these interactions do not require you to speak fluent Finnish AND while most Finns (especially the younger generations) speak very good English, you will have customers who are perhaps a bit older and dont speak good enough English OR they are not comfortable to use English in this kind of a setting. This is why these type of customer service (part-time) jobs would require you to speak Finnish. This is just one example, but i hope you get the point. 2. As a barista, your job is to take orders from behind the counter and provide customers with their desired products. While the customers might be similar to the ones in the first example, the level of interaction is much easier, ergo customers who do not speak that good English might still be comfortable enough to order a coffee and a bun. Thus, these type of jobs do not necessarily require you to speak Finnish. The above mentioned examples apply to basic level customer service jobs. However, what is good to understand that once you get far enough with your studies you can start applying for part-time jobs in your own field. These jobs (depending on the field and the company) dont necessarily require you to speak Finnish. Some do, some dont. This is purely dependent on the role and the official company language. However, a good rule of thumb is that the more specialised your job, the less likely it is that Finnish language skills are required. This is just a simplified summary of the situation, but i hope this gets you some context. Since you are interested in working in Finland, i have a few recommendations for you. Im not a financial professional so please do not trust me 100%. Instead, please do your own research by e.g. contacting a Finnish bank about this. There might be some restrictions here if you come from outside the EU. Those restrictions would not be about investing but instead about opening a bank account and a trading account. In short, getting a Finnish bank account (and therefore the ability to open a trading account) as a non-EU (European Union) or EEA (European Economic Area) citizen is not as straightforward as you might think. This is because of some of the regulations that we have in Finland and in the EU regulating how banks work. Having said this, if you stay in Finland for longer than 1 year, you should be able to open a bank account in Finland. Also, do note that you GPA is not the only thing that impacts your chances on getting a scholarship. Theres a bunch of stuff impacting that.
We have a massive shortage of certified nurses so as long as you have a degree and you speak good enough finnish, you will never have issues finding work 👍. The only big barrier is the language requirement. Hovever, if you are coming to finland to study a degree in nursing, you will learn finnish during your studies.

Hey Amit and thanks for the question. Primary education in Finland is free if it is done in Finnish or Swedish. However, if you want your child to study in English, you need to get them admitted to a private school that teach an international curriculum. These schools have tuition fees. There are not any specific rules for english jobs. Some companies have them some dont. I cant really make a list about this topic because many companies have both finnish and english language jobs. What field are you in?
Hey Yasmin and thanks for the question. Studying to become a nurse is a completely separate degree and if you want to become a doctor, you would have to apply to medical school just like anyone else. Having a degree in nursing does not fast track this process. There is nothing stopping you from studying to become a doctor after getting your degree in nursing but still, having a degree in nursing does not make the studies any faster.

Im sorry but there are not such sample papers available. Please note that whether or not there are any kinds of entrance exams depends not only on the university but also on the programme that you are applying to. So not all universities use entrance exams. And even if they do, most schools do not publicise their old exams.
Depends on the programme that you are applying to. Most master's degree programmes do not use the SAT's in the applications but some might. You need to check out the programme application page from each university that you are interested in.
To be honest the only part time paid job in Finland are cleaning, food deliveries and cleaning 😂. Coming from someone who's living and working in Finland. The Key words are Paid job. Ph'D students do research for little of nothing.

Ah crap... well that sucks because it looked like things were getting better. What happened is that there was a bunch of large parties in the orientation week around helsinki (different univerisities) and a bunch of students got infected. This made most of the unis in helsinki to pull back and close up again...
Im actually already back in helsinki but im just trying to keep isolated as much as possible. I have some close relatives and friends who are in the risk groups so i dont want to take any chances. So we have to set up a meetup a bit later in when things calm down again.

Im glad if this helped! So I do mention those type of jobs at the end of the video. You can definitely apply for these kind of jobs and they might even be the best ones at the beginning of your studies. However, theres nothing that much to them. Some service sector jobs require Finnish language skills, some dont. The most problematic jobs are those where you handle food because you need to have a hygiene certificate in order to do those jobs. The only tip for applying for these jobs is to simply update and print out your cv, put on some walking shoes and dress accordingly and start walking into every single store, bard, restaurant and other place where you could get these jobs, introduce yourself (briefly) and ask whether or not they might have something open. There are a few recruitment sites that have these kind of jobs, but the problem is that most of these job ads are written in Finnish. So your best bet is to look for "hidden jobs" by following the aforementioned steps.

Oh dude, Finland has a massive shortage of talented IT people! There are estimates that we have an immediate need for over 10.000 developers around the country and this number is growing by the thousands each year. This means that for multiple years, the Finnish job market has experienced something that we call the _employees market_ meaning that highly talented and experience software developers have been pretty much able to decide who they want to work for and for what kind of a salary. Software developers that know what they are doing are pretty much guaranteed to get a job in Finland. In addition, i would like to remind you that Finland is the land of telecom and networking and e.g. Nokia is a Finnish company. They are nowadays no longer manufacturing phones but rather fully focusing on networking technologies including 5G. So im 100% sure that we would have use for your talents here.

While working for a recruitment company, i actually got to work with multiple customers that focused on either digital or physical security systems. Hey and thanks so much for the important question! I absolutely get where you are coming from and i hope that this gets easier over time. So we Finns are usually a bit 'reserved' which means that it takes quite a lot of time to make friends of us. This takes a lot of time and effort and the current corona situation is definitely not helping with the situation especially since most student parties have been cancelled. This is a bit of a cliche but alcohol does help us get to know you because it gets most Finns to open up a bit more. This is why student parties and activities are so important for making friends in school.
Another really good way to get to know either local or other international students is by participating in student clubs and volunteering in different student activities. These are not only fun things to do but you also get to know a lot of cool people and you get to hang out with them through these activities. So i would definitely recommend that you look for interesting student clubs or associations in your school and make sure to attend their info evenings or open meetings when they are arranged. Early autumn is the best time for this because most clubs are looking for new members right now.
I dont really know what to say about these habit groups because this is a new term for me, but in terms of getting to know new people, i would definitely recommend being as active in your local student community as possible 👍.

Oh dude, i will definitely make a video about this, but i just have to say that you are worrying about nothing. Software development is the hottest field in finland right now and finland has a deficit of tens of thosands of competent developers. The problem is so big atm that many talented developers are basically able to dictate their salaries and choose the companies they want to work for. Basically if someone asked me about what field to study in terms of good employment opportunities and salaries, i would say software development before you could finish your sentence 😅.
If you want a couple of tips, we have a lack especially in cloud computing and mobile development. Really good iOS developers are paid like top management level salaries because iOS isnt taught at any school, instead all of the good iOS devs have taught it to themselves (on top of having a master's).

I cant directly tell you how this is handled but i was informed to let anyone in this kind of a situation to contact Hoas customer support directly. OliverR Hey! I talked with HOAS regarding this and they advised me to cancel the current application and apply for a new one in a while once I have an idea of when I might actually be coming there. They told me to keep updating the application at least once a month so that they could help in finding an accommodation for me. They are really helpful!

So if you have a bachelor's degree you should definitely go for a master's. We dont really do diplomas or e.g. MBA's in Finland. Master's programmes in Finland are expensive for on European Union citizens, but you can also apply for a scholarship to cover those costs.

Do big tech companies in Finland like microsoft hire computer science students from aalto university in their second year at the university?
Hey Amir. I already posted an answer to this question in another videos but ill copy and paste it here if anyone else stumbles upon this question.
So the simple answer to this question is "Yes, if you have the skills that these companies are looking for." The more complicated and technical answer is that yes, you can definitely get hired by these companies as a student at Aalto university. However, this has nothing to do with your school or the year you are in. In Finland companies dont really care what schools you are going to or what year you are in. They only care about your skills and whether or not you can fulfil their needs. Also, companies are not allowed to limit job ads to people who are in a specific year or from a specific school (unless you work in a regulated field like in health care where you need x amount of study credits to get certified to specific jobs).
Because whether or not you can get hired by these companies has nothing to do with your school or year, it is all about your skills. So now the question is, do people usually have the necessary skills to work for these companies in their second year at university? My honest opinion is that most people dont. Some do but i think those people are exceptions. You have to consider that these companies are really popular and they get a lot of applicants. This means that the competition is very high. Thus, the companies have the ability to choose the best people AND because they cant discriminate those who are a year ahead or behind in school, they will only focus on your skills and talent (i know, im repeating myself).
If you want to work for these big tech companies and get a job there early in your studies, you have to have a really solid educational background (high GPA to separate you from other applicants) and you have to have some kind of special skills (e.g. knowing some rare coding languages or frameworks that most people dont) that makes you special. However, the best way to separate yourself from the pack in the early stages of your studies is to either have prior relevant work experience OR by having done some really interesting projects (could be through hobbies or e.g. through volunteering) where you have achieved excellent and measurable results.

@@amiraziz2479 I have absolutely no idea of the salary levels in the US and in Sweden. However, what i would say is that you should not compare the salaries side by side because they do not tell you the whole picture in terms of quality of living. E.g. even if you made more money per month in the US, you have to consider that the US has an immensely expensive health care system and housing can be crazy expensive depending on the city. On the other hand, Finland has higher taxes. So its all about the context and looking blindly at the salary level can be very deceiving.

Ciao Angelo and thanks for the great question. I actually have a few videos coming up where interview experienced recruiters about this topic. Those videos will give you a lot of perspective to this issue because its not a fully black and white question. So make sure to be subscribed and have all notifications turned on so that you dont miss those interviews when i get them online 🙂.
Anyway, while you are waiting for those interviews to come online, the simple answer to this question is that some part-time jobs do require Finnish but some dont. A good rule of thumb is that jobs that require you to be in direct contact with customers AND where you need to help customers make purchasing decisions do most often require at least some Finnish skills. However, customer service jobs where the customer interaction isnt that deep might not require you to speak Finnish at all. Let me give you two examples:
1. You are a sales clerk at a clothing store. Your job is not only to help with the cash register but to also help customers to choose their outfits, recommend products and help them find the right sizes, colors etc.. While these interactions do not require you to speak fluent Finnish AND while most Finns (especially the younger generations) speak very good English, you will have customers who are perhaps a bit older and dont speak good enough English OR they are not comfortable to use English in this kind of a setting. This is why these type of customer service (part-time) jobs would require you to speak Finnish. This is just one example, but i hope you get the point.
2. As a barista, your job is to take orders from behind the counter and provide customers with their desired products. While the customers might be similar to the ones in the first example, the level of interaction is much easier, ergo customers who do not speak that good English might still be comfortable enough to order a coffee and a bun. Thus, these type of jobs do not necessarily require you to speak Finnish.
The above mentioned examples apply to basic level customer service jobs. However, what is good to understand that once you get far enough with your studies you can start applying for part-time jobs in your own field. These jobs (depending on the field and the company) dont necessarily require you to speak Finnish. Some do, some dont. This is purely dependent on the role and the official company language. However, a good rule of thumb is that the more specialised your job, the less likely it is that Finnish language skills are required.
This is just a simplified summary of the situation, but i hope this gets you some context. Since you are interested in working in Finland, i have a few recommendations for you.

Im not a financial professional so please do not trust me 100%. Instead, please do your own research by e.g. contacting a Finnish bank about this. There might be some restrictions here if you come from outside the EU. Those restrictions would not be about investing but instead about opening a bank account and a trading account. In short, getting a Finnish bank account (and therefore the ability to open a trading account) as a non-EU (European Union) or EEA (European Economic Area) citizen is not as straightforward as you might think. This is because of some of the regulations that we have in Finland and in the EU regulating how banks work.

We have a massive shortage of certified nurses so as long as you have a degree and you speak good enough finnish, you will never have issues finding work 👍. The only big barrier is the language requirement. Hovever, if you are coming to finland to study a degree in nursing, you will learn finnish during your studies.

Hey Yasmin and thanks for the question. Studying to become a nurse is a completely separate degree and if you want to become a doctor, you would have to apply to medical school just like anyone else. Having a degree in nursing does not fast track this process. There is nothing stopping you from studying to become a doctor after getting your degree in nursing but still, having a degree in nursing does not make the studies any faster.

Please note that whether or not there are any kinds of entrance exams depends not only on the university but also on the programme that you are applying to.
