The only true failure is when one doesn’t try. Enjoyed your attempt. Mag loops can be amazing under the right circumstances. I have an Alex Loop, second hand. My first contact was checking in to a net where NC was in Maryland, running 10W. I’m in Va. working from in my house pointing out the picture window. Another contact was to Europe from same. This was during solar minimum. Outside on high ground is usually even better. Haven’t had chance to try near the beach yet. Hope to work you one day. 73 de N4WLC
How frikken awsome is that...? Valt you doing an excellent job in that Hotel Room. No interfering the Neighbors and having fun with qrp opration from anywhere any place @ anytime. Happy weekend & 73's de Your Friend Uncle Guenter
Not bad at all. That G-90 can bark! I've made contacts from my QTH in Georgia as far as Russia with my chameleon F-Loop, with the Booster Kit.im guessing your window is facing the wrong direction and the construction acts as a Faraday Cage too, because I've made DX contacts to Hungary with my 705 and my F-Loop, from my living room. Everything has to come together to make this work. I thank you for trying.
I have a moonraker WhizLoop in my apartment, connected to my Yaesu FT-817. It has been a stellar antenna for being inside in my living room. Several hundred QSOs have been made with it. Don't give up.
Dang Walt. I was hoping for better results. My landlord made me take down the 25' Ribbi I put together from one of your other videos. It was up for a few hours and I made some pretty good contacts with it from Chicago to RI & WV with the G90. Someone suggested I look into a loop, so that's what I was doing. The prices for a commercial unit are so far out of my budget it's ridiculous. So, as I think you know by now, if I can build it, I will talk. If there's a will, there's a way!! LOL Thanks for the heads up on the loop. Gee, I live in Chicago Land, and I haven't seen that shirt in years' 73's my friend de KA9TII.
The XYL and I travel for a living. We spend 3 weekends a month in hotel rooms. Most hotels are Faraday cages. I always opt for upstairs rooms. If you’re lucky you’ll get a window that opens about 4 inches. Then you can hang a wire or with permission erect a Hamstick dipole, wolf river coil or Buddy pole. 75% of the time it’s just the HTs.
Walt, I was in the Navy in 69 and 70, at NAS Norfolk. I was a member of the VAW-121, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron. My ship was the USS Forrestal, better known as the "FLAMING INFERNO." Can't wait for another video on the loop.
That beach with a wire got your spoiled! 🤣 Seriously, I'm looking for some antenna options to use from my apartment, no balcony. Maybe this isn't it. Thanks and 73!
Wow this is an old one. Thanks, I think it might struggle as well because of the building around it. I’ve found that you really have to get out on a balcony of a hotel to get anything to work half way decent
I purchased this antenna as a supplement to the Moonraker WhizLoop that I use. I went from a QTH with an excellent vertical to an apartment that doesn't really allow outdoor antennas. And even though I am using the much cheaper Moonraker, I am making QSOs every single day...be it FT8/FT4 or CW. I didn't try SSB because I never really operate SSB.
Great video - I bought one of those small single loop mag loop antennas from China and used it in my backyard and have made a couple of contacts - very weak reports. I've tried moving inside and have picked up a few stations but never a two way contact. Of course, mag loops work best when you can rotate the antenna. without anything in the room getting in the way. PS - does the faraday loop connect directly into your radio or is there another variable capacitor for adjusting the SWR?
Great video. Those windows may have metal in the glass. Tough gig. You were bad being heard. How many watts out were you. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming. Have fun, stay safe and stay healthy!
Yes I’m sure the metal around the windows and the steel structure of the building were killing me. I’m going to do that antenna right in the future and take it outside. Thanks for the kind words. All the best!!!
Yep, worst case scenario. All the metal used in the building construction plus the metallized Mylar film on the glass made it one big tin can. I’m surprised you heard as much as you did. Great experiment and a great video!
If it was this past Thursday the 9th. I heard nothing on 40 meters either. I finally get back to my hotel room early from work and hear nothing but static. even checked websdr and found a station near were I was staying and that showed dead also.
The pole is a Shakespeare Quickstik telescopic fishing pole. It's 17' long but I'm only partially extending it and just using standard black electrical tape to attach the antenna to the pole.
*Hello! I ordered a similar antenna from China. But it doesn't have a communication loop. There's some kind of box connected to a large **loop. It** is unknown due to what it will work on the transfer?*
Do mag loops actually work? There are many people on Utube that use them once and they never use them again. They are expensive and I have looked at them but I would I would hate to spend that kind of money. Have you tried it at the coast?
I’ve tried it down at the boardwalk by me and was a little more successful. I will try it at the beach soon. I honestly am not a major fan of Mag loops. They are a lot of work and in my opinion not enough juice for the squeeze.
I have the same antenna with a 705 and so far it’s been mostly disappointing. I did get an FT8 contact with Canada from north Alabama with it so I can’t say it doesn’t work but it’s definitely a comprise antenna.
Good video,❗️Walt i am thinking about adding a Magnetic Loop to my antenna collection. if you get the chance try the little Elecraft AX1 vertical its my antenna of choice for on the go with my Xiegu 5105. 73. KV5P
hi sir... the problem is that you are qrp, with magnetic loop inside, and a cold snowy weather !!! if you give your call only one time, quickly like with a 100 watts transceiver and a big antenna, the result will be : FAIL !!..repeat slowly your call many times, using by moment only 2 letters ( Oscar GUATEMALA !!), and think you ll have better chance to succeed !! cheers..
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Had a QSO Copenhagen Canada on 10w using a hameleon F-Loop 2 days ago - placed in close to the beach near CPH airport. Surorisingly good results

I'm a new ham and I love videos like this. Great education on a mag loop and what you can do with it.
Thanks for watching! Pretty much all of my videos are experimenting and learning as we go!
I think it’s so cool how you take your radio equipment with you when you travel.
Thank you! I’m truly blessed to have a career that sends me on some great travel. Thanks for watching and 73, K4OGO
Success or failure you learn for the next adventure and amazing your working HF in a Hotel room with a Mag loop. Great job!
Thank you!!
If I would have known you were in Wisconsin, we could have set up a sched. Nice video.
Next time!

You're making me feel better about the Wander Wand loop I have. Only 2 FT8 contacts in several hours of trying.
Yes that loop gave me fits, I made some decent contacts with it later on the beach but it was still a bit of a struggle

This antenna drove me crazy LOL
This is pretty much my home situation, and trying to figure a good way to set up some sort of antenna that's indoor-only.
Nice try, anyhow!
Wondering what a magnet-base mobile antenna on something metal might do?
Enjoyed, thanks...

How many watts were you at when you contacted VE2CSI from Quebec?
20 watts, that’s max power for the Xiegu G90

Have you caught anything with that pole? The pole may be bad luck 😂. Idk this might be a good setup for FT8...
Hahaha yeah maybe I need a new pole. I’m actually going to take this thing out on the beach soon now that it’s getting warmer

Will do! I’ve heard that’s a great antenna.
Do you find having to tune the mag loop when changing frequency by just a few kHz become aggravating? I tried one and found it frustrating.
Yes this antenna takes a lot of work and time to tune, it can be frustrating.

Hopefully you stopped in at Micky Lou's. The hamburgers there are great.
Yes! Love that place.

Half the time my 5G cellphone barely works inside a hotel, so I'm really not surprised!
Roger that! I set my phone to 4G all the time for that reason
I saw a guy I try one of those from a rowboat. He called into the maritime mobile net
That’s cool!
You are inside what is likely a concrete building AND your transmission direction is along the building axis - no wonder. Try it outside 👍
Yes I used it outside with success
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Had a QSO Copenhagen Canada on 10w using a hameleon F-Loop 2 days ago - placed in close to the beach near CPH airport. Surorisingly good results
You will lose 1.75-2 S-Units being inside on both transmit and receive. That and being QRP makes things very difficult to be sure.
Yes indeed!
I’ll bet you would have got through using cw.
Ha, been in that chair with Chameleon Mag Loop. Same results. Counting on Solar Cycle to improve success rate.

That hotel looks like it was designed by Stalin’s finest.
LOL, it’s an old Best Western and the only hotel in this town. It actually has a great bar so that makes up for the Cold War vibe 😂
