Having seen this comparison I must say that I am quite happy that I purchased the deluxe edition to play with my friends. The wooden components and also the player "mats" are actually quite important as you pointed out - they make it easier to handle all the tokens.
This game Blew my mind! it's so complex yet so simple. Its exactly like playing Europa Universalis 2 but a super light weight version of it..... but you can touch it! For sure the best game in my 100+ collection! The Deluxe version gives great extra value and is a must for fans of the game, also the extra big player mat is a must. once you used the 15% bigger map, you cant go back.
Having the extra nice components is also great. But is it worth the price? Just depends on how much you enjoy the game. And how often you'll get it to the table

The only thing i would be interested from the deluxe box is the map extension, because as a Hungarian i need to have the eastern Europe part there.

do the cards fit in the basic game trays if they are sleeved?
