I have traveling scales, and I had many times been told my luggage is overweight, and I pull out mine to make the point I am right and the staff has always made a double check and suddenly my luggage is the right weight, they cheat
There are a lot of factors at work here. I've done carry-on only for 2 weeks in Europe, partially because there were connecting flights with short layovers. But when my flight is direct, nonstop, I usually check that same carry-on bag. It's unlikely to get lost, I don't have to navigate the airport and restrooms with it, and it frees up space for others. The airlines brought this on themselves by focusing on greed over the passenger experience. I'm old enough to remember when air travel was fun.
I'm old enough to remember when every single passenger didn't insist on carry-on only and then carry on two of the largest bags allowed (plus a third if they can swing it), then REFUSE to gate-check (for FREE) when asked. Many airlines let you check bags free just for holding their credit card - wouldn't call that "greedy." Sadly, a lot of the "fun" had to do with the fact that flying was more exclusive.
The pillow thing will not work on most airlines at it count as your personal item, they were even telling people that they need put neck pillows in their bags.
Did you not finish the third grade? What you wrote is an incomprehensible jumble of run-on sentences. Commas are not replacements for semicolons. You also need to proofread before posting; your "sentence" makes no sense due to what appears to be an error in a preposition.
Gate check your bag when they call for volunteers and you are trying to avoid the fees. But you still need to prepare if that doesn’t happen. Which means you pack in the allowed size for a carry on. It also depends on the length of a flight and where one is going.
My best pillow hack works in cold weather. I wear my down coat on the plane, then once at my seat, stuff it into a pillowcase and use a rubberband to close it. Solves two problems--gives you a super comfy pillow and your down coat isn't take up space in the overhead.
When I used to travel weekly for business, I would keep a small (store branded) bag from a previous purchase from one of the airport stores in my luggage for emergencies. If I couldn't fit everything on my flight home, I'd use that emergency bag to carry excess items. It worked flawlessly for years. We used to say that the frequent traveler is always going to be smarter than the corporate folks in a boardroom inventing travel policy.
I recently flew with a man that was obviously too large to be in the middle seat. It was a miserable trip because not only did he take both handrails, but he spread his legs out and took my leg room. I felt like a sardine, but truly this man had nowhere to go. But it was the longest three hours of my life.
One viral TikTok "hack" involves putting your airplane seatbelts around your ankles--supposedly so you will be able to sleep on long flights without sliding or falling out of your seat (even though if you just wore your seatbelt like you're supposed to, it will keep you in your seat). The problem with this "hack" is that in case of bad turbulence, wearing a seatbelt around your ankles makes it more likely you're gonna get thrown out of your seat, bump your head on the ceiling, etc. In case of an emergency, it would also take you longer to get out of the seatbelt. Apparently, it can also cause blood clots from restricted blood flow if the belt is constricting your ankles and keeping them immobile for a long time.
The problem with trying to conceal things under your clothing--is that before or after you go through the body scanners? Plus TSA does keep an eye out for people who seem to be concealing things---you might be pulled out of line to show them you aren't carrying drugs or some other contraband. This is so dumb.
After, i’m guessing. TSA doesnt really care about the amount of bags you carry with you, the airline does. But tsa could warn/stop you if you obviously carry so many bags like, 5?? 😂 (happened to my mom once, she had a purse, carry on luggage, and 2-3 more small shopping/grocery bags on her).
Regarding the woman who put her bag under her sweater. Sometimes the airline wants to know how far along you are in your pregnancy. So, you might have to rethink that one.
Well... then you turn all offended and go "Excuse me? I'm NOT pregnant" And now they've just fat shamed her... so, probably possible to get away with it if you're willing to act like an ass.
I was that size at six months. You can be even bigger with twins. Unless the airlines ask you to remove your clothes and show everyone your belly, I’m not sure how they would check that. The only thing they can do is put a x-ray at each gate, which is not only expensive but also, I’m pretty sure illegal for them to give you an x-ray without your consent.
When I pack, I'll weigh. If I'm over limit, I'll cull. Still leaves me with enough to wear, plus tech and other gear. Less weight also facilitates ease of movement. And it's okay to do laundry during a trip.
I am always amazed at what people consider "carry-on" when they are boarding the plane and then it takes longer for them to try to find room to stuff it all into an overhead bin (more than likely a regional jet as I normally fly out of IND).
You’re 💯 correct about bag size enforcement in Europe. I always remember the time when I was leaving MUC. The “Frau” patrolling the area before security saw my carry on bag (granted I had opened the extender) and stopped me. When I went to prove my bag was within the limit, it didn’t fit. She was good! So I had to do that walk of shame to the check in desk. The upside was that I had PE so I had a 2 bag allowance.
Was about to comment on our airport check in baggage. I had a friend who got his carry on weighed in the Tokyo Boarding gate! We had to get some of his stuffs into our own carry ons
I had a messenger bag that held my purse and anything I needed to grab while my luggage was gone. Didn’t even need the overhead and it more than fit beneath the seat in front of me. Had tons of pockets too
I have a friend who has worked both as a flight attendant and as a ticketing agent at the check-in counter. He says that he and all his co-workers know every trick people try to pull. If the passenger isn’t behaving badly and a flight isn’t completely full, they sometimes let it slide, but if you’re being loud or rude, they’ll call you out for screwing around with "hacks" like these. Just don’t think you’re pulling something over on the airline staff. They know what you’re doing. And it might bite you in the a$$ later on…
A non-disgusting "puke bag" option - I always carry extra ziplock bags - you can also hang one of those with your phone in it for hands free watching :)
My husbands carryon bag was 0.5 lbs overweight. That was the only bag he he had. No personal item. We were travelling first class. The agent at boarding gate told him he couldn’t carry it on as it was overweight. Instead he took out his shoes and put them in a plastic bag I had. On the plane he put the shoes back in his bag. Annoying.
I remember the last super-filled flight I took out of Chicago, there was a bottleneck as the ticket agents were trying to figure out how to fit everybody and their myriad bags on to the plane. I loved it when I was asked, “Is that all you got?” and was waved through. A few minutes later, when I saw folks scurrying back and forth trying to find space in the overhead bins, I got up, retrieved my Underseat Pro backpack and stuck it under my seat to make room for some one else. My personal item was a small purse, so it was no problem fitting both bags under the seat. I feel sorry for folks who are forced to gate-check their bags-I think it's best to just go ahead and plan (and pack) better.
next time you can refuse and leave your bag over the top... if you consider that bag your overhead bag then you are right to leave it on top and let the others deal with the consequences of their actions...
@@durhamskywriter "plan (and pack) better" is doing a fair bit of hand waving though. I recently moved to a new country over seas. Taking as much (legal) advantage of the overhead bins was inescapable as we tried to pack as many of our belongings as possible. Maybe our case was extreme, but parents travelling a baby can easily run into maxing out their luggage very quickly. I'm sure most people getting caught in bad spots like that probably packed things that they intended to use in their travel; there's all sorts of other reasons to be pushing the limits. And with extra baggage fees as high as they are, man, I can't fault people for taking to other means in hopew to bypass it, lol
in my experience backpack only is not only easier and cheaper but be prepared for extra security screenings. like they take you into a separate room and make you dump out your bag type screenings. i guess solo-female-back-pack-only is the new heightened threat
This! I was recently singled out from the passport control line and taken away for questioning because the officer, a *female* officer, was so suspicious that I, a female, was travelling alone to country where I didn't know anyone. They kept repeatedly asking me if I had family or friends I was meeting and if I knew anyone in the country, and wouldn't accept my, "No, I don't. I'm on a solo backpacking trip for the next 6 months." I get that there's heightened security and checks with flying nowadays but sometimes their "vigilance" is absurd and discriminatory - like what, a woman can't travel by herself? 🤦🏻♀️🙄
When I left Korea, I saw a married couple weighing individual.clotning articles to try to get their bags under 70 pounds each. My two bags were barely 70 pounds together. People without children should never come close to a 70 pound bag.
Worked at an International Airport for 3 years in the Transport Authority side, these hacks are always a risk, one Airline might accept it one day and not the other, one Customs, or TSA agent might let it slide, then another might not. If you're willing to take the risk then be prepared that you may have to forfeit items you thought you could get by with. Whether by throwing them away or surrendering them. I 100% guarantee that the excuse of "I did this before at such and such airport", will not fly and no one cares. Some airlines can even revoke your ticket if they think you are trying to work the system. TSA has no problem putting someone on the no fly list, or mandatory search list... It's much easier to just follow the Airline and TSA guidelines than trying to save a buck and end up losing out in the end. I also guarantee if the Airline or checkpoint is busy and you create a spectacle, or hold up the process of other passengers, you will get that extra attention you desired by trying these hacks.
I live in FL and I can go to Orlando or Tampa. This guys was flying out of Orlando flying with Frontier. They knew that his pillow was full of clothes. It was that long cylinder pillow. they told him to check it in. he had a full on melt down. when the cops were called he changed his tone. at that point it was too late. he was back tracking hard, the gate was close and the front desk person had it.
I am probably never flying anywhere ever again. The last time I tried to plan a trip via air it was ridiculous how many things had added fees on them. Like, it more than doubled the cost of the ticket when I was done. So I ended up not buying a ticket and not going. Trains are crap, takes forever and aren't reliable to actually get you where you're going... but at least you ONLY pay for your ticket. So yeah. Car or Train it is. Probably Car.
here's a luggage weight hack: weigh yourself without your luggage. then weigh yourself carrying it. the difference between the two is the weight of your luggage. if it's too heavy, you can take stuff out at home.
The bag under her top simulating a baby bump could be a problem. Many airlines do not allow women to fly after a certain point in the pregnancy. They may ask for a doctor's note.
Pack less. That’s what I do. I’ve learned over the years that less is enough. I still don’t always wear everything I take when we cruise. Laundry can be done on all Princess ships. We are going on a 2 week cruise in January. My goal is 2 carry ons. Probably will have one carry on and one checked because men’s shoes are just too big. I can put a pair of my shoes into a pair of his.
Our last flight was Toronto to NYC for a weekend, about a year ago. We did one carry-on for 2 people, then we had a small back pack and purse for our personal items (his insulin, a book each for the trip, our passports, wallets, and hotel info) - it was FINE. If you're going away for longer, just check a bag
As to a extra bag you don’t necessarily have three things, toss your purse into that carryon but then I don’t have a huge purse. That said I would use a better carryon than in the video. More like a large purse size duffel.
It makes me angry when people bring bags that are clearly larger than the limit as a carry-on. I took a tape measure with me (and the common dimensions written down) when I selected by carry-on. When people bring one too large, I'm penalized by having a lot of trouble fitting it in the overhead or having to put it and my personal item under the seat in front of me.
It's not lying or stealing. If people who are overweight, are able to be spilling into your seat then I have absolutely no issues with people trying to wear extra clothes/bags as their weight still will be less than an overweight/obese person who didn't buy 2 seats and have their fat in your space.
Many people complaining about "airline greed" are the same ones falling over themselves to get the right credit card for lounge access, when holding the right credit card can also get you a free checked bag.
The weight of luggage a plane carries has a lot to do with how it operates. Bypassing those checks makes you a dick for putting people at risk (even if it's not major) for being selfish. If you hate checked back fees, learn to pack less.
In Mexico you need to put your pillow inside your bag because it counts like extra item, so no work here, also there are those measurements things where u need to put your carry on to see if fits snd even is weight too often so... Last one definitely wont work over here either
Airlines should enforce all rules, but they dont, they let people off, causing trouble on the plane for staff and customers alike!! It just amazes me sometimes hows much stuff people get on the plane with, then they are stuffing it in overhead lockers up and down the plane and moving other peoples stuff. Airlines are their own worst enemies!
I've always thought just take the essentials and buy anything you might need there, then ship any extra home before leaving. I know this doesn't always work due to accessible shipping places, but it's been a thought for awhile. Like ship home any large souvenirs.
How many oversized backpacks get on a plane as carry-on? I mean I've seen those military sized ones packed to the hilt (they're huge!) on a guy's back getting on a plane and no questions asked.🙄
Most of these are quite silly. I see the stuffing the pillow hack as an opportunity to leave clothes behind. How many times do people leave items on a plane when they leave? I know I did that once with a neck pillow, and realized I really didn't need a neck pillow any longer.
I watched so many “pack for Europe with carry on only” videos before my trip to the south of France last year. And the majority of them gave awful advice. They all had oversized bags that far exceeded both size and weight restrictions. I cringe to think of all the people that followed those recommendations, only to get a harsh reality check at the airport. Fortunately I complied with size and weight instructions for both my carry on and personal item, so I had no problems.
The last one is why soooo many airports wont give you youd boarding pass until they see youf bags. You can check jn but still have go to desk to get pass. And this is why 😭
My family of 3 did personal size only on Frontier to Orlamdo for a 4 day trip to Universal Studios. None of us had to prove our bags fit, and we all got on easily. That was with all of my universal extras, like two resort cups, two pork cups, and two Harry Potter wands in their boxes. And my husband is six feet tall and three hundred and fifty pounds, so his clothes are not small. If we can do it, you can too. I almost fit a pool inflatable in my bag even.
TikTok is mainly by and for younger people, hence some of the dumb "hacks." Being mostly younger women, some will probably get away with them, but they should also have the money ready to pay for having items checked. I travel mostly to Asia and once they bring all of the crap on the plane, the flight attendant might gate check their bag. Maybe getting an additional checked bag for free is the real strategy because maybe they already have 2 checked bags lol.
I always plan on checking my rolling carry on for most trips. I have a backpack that has everything I need for a few days should my bag get lost. It’s less effort for me, and makes boarding nice.
What are you doing on RUclips? Nik, you're getting paid better than those on the videos, no matter how many millions those videos show. Those who know what's good for travelling watch it on RUclips; of course, your channel is one of the best for getting those tips.
Things are tightening up, but people love to gamble. Especially when they see all these 'stories' of what works to hack the system (even if it's an urban myth). Your point is well taken. It may work, it may even work a lot. But it's not a lock to ALWAYS work. And that's where the gamblers will roll the dice and the risk averse (like me) will just avoid the possible 'got ya' at the gate. What's your take on the vests and coats with 30 pockets? I'm waiting for those to start coming under fire too. It's a crazy travel space these days, emphasis on space.
I generally follow the rules but I don't see why is it such a problem if you put clothes in a C-shaped travel pillow that you wear. That is just petty on the airlines if they make a fuss about it. Why do hey care? It is not like it is stuffed with illegal sht
Nah, concealing a bag under a sweater or sweatshirt is just stoopid with 2 o’s. Her undershirt is clearly visible, so TSA is going to ask her to take the sweater off before she goes through the scanner. Cover blown… stoopid…
She had already gone through the tsa line. She put the bag-that is now under her sweater-on the conveyer belt to scan, knowing that tsa hadn’t counted her bags. Then later put the bag under her sweater.
I hate checking bags if I have a normal size bag that I can keep with me I feel much better when those inevitable delays or sudden changes happen. People just need to stop packing their whole lives when they travel lol
I have traveling scales, and I had many times been told my luggage is overweight, and I pull out mine to make the point I am right and the staff has always made a double check and suddenly my luggage is the right weight,

What a fun video to watch. If you have to be so sneaky to get things onto the plane, then you have seriously overpacked.
Or the planes overcharge
Agreed. It really is that simple😊.

I have only seen that once and marveled at how he was able to get on with that.
Most likely their phones is nastier then the 🤮 bag 😂
Most of these are quite silly. I see the stuffing the pillow hack as an opportunity to leave clothes behind. How many times do people leave items on a plane when they leave? I know I did that once with a neck pillow, and realized I really didn't need a neck pillow any longer.
Hilarious! Love the fact you made this video
This is why airlines are starting to charge even for carryons
Instead of a tote, get/use a duty free bag. People buy stuff at the airport all the time and it doesn't count as your personal item.
What is going on with these people? I have literally packed for an 8 day vacation using 1 carryon and 1 personal item. 😮
The connnector is amazing!
I always plan on checking my rolling carry on for most trips. I have a backpack that has everything I need for a few days should my bag get lost. It’s less effort for me, and makes boarding nice.
😂😂 Those were funny!
You can put everything else you are carrying in the tote bag.
Soooooo many bad travel tips and hacks on tiktok and instagram. Soooooo many bad ones.
I am sorry, you are a real piece of work when you try to bring a checked bag on as a carry on.
I've use travel compression bags& they work great.
What are you doing on RUclips?
Nik, you're getting paid better than those on the videos, no matter how many millions those videos show. Those who know what's good for travelling watch it on RUclips; of course, your channel is one of the best for getting those tips.
I check bag weight before I leave home
Get on Red Note! We'll love to see you there!
Interesting presentation. 👍🏼🤣
It's time to learn to live with less, most places you travel to will have laundry mats if you are gone for extended periods of time.
I view most other people as dumb whether on TT or not.
Most hacks are nonsense in my opinion 😂
Things are tightening up, but people love to gamble. Especially when they see all these 'stories' of what works to hack the system (even if it's an urban myth). Your point is well taken. It may work, it may even work a lot. But it's not a lock to ALWAYS work. And that's where the gamblers will roll the dice and the risk averse (like me) will just avoid the possible 'got ya' at the gate. What's your take on the vests and coats with 30 pockets? I'm waiting for those to start coming under fire too. It's a crazy travel space these days, emphasis on space.
I've been thinking about those; not as a way to carry more but a way to make what I carry easily accessible.
I generally follow the rules but I don't see why is it such a problem if you put clothes in a C-shaped travel pillow that you wear. That is just petty on the airlines if they make a fuss about it. Why do hey care? It is not like it is stuffed with illegal sht
Pack less and avoid fees, just rent Airb&b with washing machine
Lots of bad everything on TikTok...
Re:Stuffing a bag under your jacket. Won't the x-ray machine pick that up? Seems dumb to me.
AFTER security! How is that not obvious?
TikTok travel tips it's just bulls..t
Nah, concealing a bag under a sweater or sweatshirt is just stoopid with 2 o’s. Her undershirt is clearly visible, so TSA is going to ask her to take the sweater off before she goes through the scanner. Cover blown… stoopid…
She had already gone through the tsa line. She put the bag-that is now under her sweater-on the conveyer belt to scan, knowing that tsa hadn’t counted her bags. Then later put the bag under her sweater.
Open your eyes and use your brain.
Barf bags? What airlines still have them? I have not seen any in decades
Singapore Airline... maybe you fly budget
Spirit
Everyone that I have been on, which is dozens per year.
travel with woman and their luggage is entertaining. They don't understand limits.
Me personally, I wish that all carryons were eliminated if it's bigger than a large pocket book, or camera case. But that's me.
Only fine if airlines didn't charge an arm and a leg to check a bag and if they didn't lose luggage.
I hate checking bags if I have a normal size bag that I can keep with me I feel much better when those inevitable delays or sudden changes happen. People just need to stop packing their whole lives when they travel lol
Just saying....my husband is the over-packer. 😂
@@grandpm9270 that would have to be a given
I've only had to check a couple times and both times they got lost. I will never check unless forced to.
