    It's an unfortunate situation, but to use it as a teaching opportunity is great.
    1 thing that sounds strange but helps me in the long run, take a picture of the animal you buy with their identification/logo/sign. I do this not for scams but for future purchases. I bought a baby Leopard Gecko that turned out spectacular and I wanted to buy more from this breeder, but for the life of me I can not remember who they were.
    Later a bough a spiderling and asked to take a picture with their logo. They were very happy about it and when the Tarantula turned out fantastic I gave their contact info to friends who wanted a species like mine. They are a small tarantula breeder of a few select rare species. I would never have remembered them since so many spider breeders names are similar,
    Sorry for the long comment but I think it can help others.
    Also if they do not want you to take a picture of the animal with their logo, you know that is a big red flag.

    • @Zettysreptiles
      @Zettysreptiles  5 месяцев назад +6

      Good advise! If they have any issues with photographing a purchase, I’d agree it’s a red flag.
      And it’s kind of crazy how many people don’t think to even look at who they are buying from, and later don’t know who to contact.
      Sometimes new keepers just are not as aware and don’t think they will get taken advantage of.
      But alas, I’d consider myself a very experienced keeper, and it still happened to me. More or less for thinking I did enough, and didn’t in the long run.

      That's a solid piece of advice, take a close up photo of the animal outside of its container. I would assume they would at least give you a card or something with their logo/business name with your purchase, right? If not then definitely get a pic.

    • @LuckyStone888
      @LuckyStone888 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@LukeMcGuireoides It's only because I bought a few Leopard Geckos for a breeding project. I took pictures of the cups they came in because they were each labeled with their morphs. The problem my best grew out to become a spectacular animal but I still don't now which breeder he came from. Pictures are easy and free and save so much confusion in the future.

    I was also scammed recently and I take responsibility for being impulsive. I was at the reptile show in southern CA and looking at tortoises. I found a vendor (said he was the breeder) with several small Hermann tortoises. He swore, after I asked him repeatedly, that they were the Western subspecies. This was important to me for many reasons. I purchased three and when I got home I did more research on how to tell the Eastern from the Western and realized he sold me Eastern Hermann’s. My fault for trusting him. I should have done my homework before making the purchase but I was too trusting.

    • @Zettysreptiles
      @Zettysreptiles  4 месяца назад +7

      The tough part is, this “breeder” may not of even known what they were which is the biggest red flag. Or maybe they did and were just looking to get your money.
      I see this often with blue tongue skinks being labeled as northerns that are clearly WC Indo’s. I can understand a someone new to the reptile hobby not immediately knowing the difference (as you were in this circumstance with the tortoise), but for them not to know?? It’s kind of gross. They are living breathing reptiles and they don’t even know what they are selling.
      In any case- sorry this happened to you, and I respect that you are able to point out your own mistakes in the situation as well.

    I breed ball Pythons personally but hearing stories like this where there are shady people at these shows doing this kind of thing sickens me to no end. This does however, provide a very valuable lesson to everyone to make sure that you are inspecting what you get while still at the table before you leave and not to assume anything especially if the vendor is hiding the "packaging" process. This should be something that should be done right in front of the customer. Watching them pack it up and then hand it to you is when I hand over the $$ personally. I have had a few vendors try the "switch" on me and have been able to just walk away the moment they try it with payment still in hand. And like others are saying you should speak out against the vendor as people need to be made aware of these situations. It sounds like they should not involved in the pet trade.
    Thanks for sharing, It's never easy to share some of these types of things. I am however happy that the little girl is in a loving home and will get the care that she needs and deserves! This speaks volumes to your character!

    Its sad when I was the one who had to “scam” a breeder at an expo. LOL Breeder had a healthy but blind in one eye lizard. When I mentioned it to him, he seemed upset.
    I never intended to upset him but I opened my big mouth. Breeder guy then refused to sell the animal to us, stating he doesn’t sell unhealthy animals.
    Likely it was an injury sustained quite by accident and not an intentional mistake on the breeders part.
    It took my hubby a long time to convince breeder to sell this lizard to us. We even downplayed the truth, saying oh he probably is fine knowing full well this lizard was blind.
    He just wanted to do the right thing, we just wanted the lizard.
    We never reported the breeder but poor guy we could see felt awful. But in a way we most definitely scammed him!
    We took our new guy right to the vet to see if anything could be done and he is blind. But we love him and thats what matters. ❤
    Far as cost to get him, we insisted we wanted to pay exact price he was selling for him, but he refused. Finally we agreed to 20.00 off. But, we still paid hundreds for him. We never look to get lizards free or lower cost, we pay what a healthy animal costs because a difference does not make a lizard less valuable to me.

Baby bearded dragons just attacked on top of each other 3 or 4 high... some of them missing legs. 1. Your word is considered evidence.
      2 picture documentation of the animal at your home
      3 picture documentation of the pic and video you sent your pal,by you and them, Ideal original and as screenshot. Archive that.
      4 get a vet to look at it and attest the sex & damage
      That's all evidence.
      In civil court and small claims court, it goes for the proponderance of evidence.
      This video can be another one.
      That all against his word that he did what, sold you a sick animal? Did a mistake?
      Important, don't mix up the high expectations in CRIMINAL court as universal - and even in criminal court, verbal deposition and witness testimony ARE EVIDENCE.
      Seriously. Don't let this guy get away with it. Small claims court definitely, get in the costs for the vet that will be necessary in case the animal is badly hurt and it's literally fraud what happened to you and the animal you have+ the documentation ARE your proof.

I hope even though I didn’t “name and shame,” that this could be considered when buying from any dealer. And this is why I trust morph market. If anyone has a negative experience they can note it for other potential buyers to see.
    I always stay away from those where multiple people have complaints. I also don't really take chances on new accounts with zero feedback no matter how sweet the deal. Why? Because people scam they scam on Amazon, pet stores, in the expos, and on sites like morph market.
    People have to dig if one is at the expo and the person wont let you physically observe the animal (check mouth, nose, vent, etc). The other thing is if they are young and aren't well started that can also be a red flag saying a good breeder ensures their babies are eating.
    Anyways its trial and error there will be horrible people no matter where you go, so you just have to have your guard up and vet the heck out of them.
    Maybe next time ask for the vendor-> look for any social media anything-> see what others have had to say. Might seem like a lot, but again safe than sorry.

    The problem of course is that for every lizard 'saved' like this, that dealer probably has a dozen more in the same condition waiting for the next bait and switch...
    I also imagine that most of them will end up dying; chameleons are tricky under good circumstances, if someone isn't really good with reptiles, their chances of successfully nursing a lizard in that condition back to health seems pretty slim.
    I bought a blizzard corn at an expo once; it seemed healthy enough to me, but died suddenly in like a month. Probably inbred with some congenital issue you couldn't see by looking...

      You’re likely not wrong. I’d hope after reporting them to the host, notifying them I did report them, that they might not be so eager to do shady things… but you never know.
      These are actually Anoles, not chameleons, opposed to their name. They do have the higher humidity requirements but not as fragile as a chameleon. But they did have actual chameleons as well.

    Always vet your dealers - I was at Tinley and saw a pretty boa labeled as a Brazilian Short Tail Amarali, slightly different than a Bolivian Amarali, and it was almost half the cost as most. But it was a larger reseller who only knew it was CBB (obviously, they aren't really imported anymore) but no lineage or anything else. I spent more money but directly with Vin Russo on a Pure Sonoran Leopard boa instead. I know the lineage, and can wait to save for an Amarali one day. I have bought a Ball Python from a breeder locally I only just met but the animal was healthy and much less expensive lol. It's always some level of risk with a lesser known dealer especially if you haven't seen them around or they are from out of town and have no evidence of good dealings in the industry etc. Glad you can give the little one a better life, hopefully you can spread some awareness about the dealer in your area - have you spoken to the dealer or have any info on them? May be worth pursuing.

    I really hope you let the expo organizers know about this. Besides the bait and switch scam, this is not a breeder who should be allowed to be at expos.

      We absolutely notified the host. I also talked to the dealer. While they did not admit to the bait and switch, they did admit they mis identified them and that they were not with them long before selling.
      Apparently it was a surrender flip or they purchased them somewhere cheap. CFC cannot be exported out of Cuba, so they weren’t importing them.
      Either way- severe lack of knowledge and I still stand by my story of them switching it. They did ask to resolve the issue, but only after I called their bs. (Just sent them a link to a local rescue and told them to help all the animals that are mistreated as I’m not sending her back to them)

    • @Zettysreptiles
      @Zettysreptiles  3 месяца назад

      I can understand why you come to that opinion, and I actually agree to an extent. There are several tables at every expo that are just loaded with whatever they can flip/breed to make a buck. There are a lot of smaller hobby breeders though, and legitimate businesses.
      Much like the puppy world, there’s good, bad, and ugly. I don’t think you can completely cut all the good people out of the picture through.. it’s quite unfair to them… but of course your opinion sounds set, and I’m not here to change it- but rather just to say I can relate to a portion of it.

    I hate to say it man bc I’ve been there myself just not with the same animal. However I feel like we as buyers are partially responsible too bc when you pick out an animal and the seller doesn’t immediately pull said animal out to put in a temporary container while he gets the deli cup or whatever ready for you to transport and it’s within your sight at all times. When they pull the whole display off their table especially when there’s other animals in that container that’s a red flag in my experience. The container should stay on display with the other animals in it and only the one you have chosen should be pulled out again in your sight line at all times. I feel like when the dealer takes the whole display off is flag number 1, when you lose sight of the whole container or your specific animal is flag number 2, when they come back & the animal has been purposely masked in a snake bag, already in the container, & especially if the container is sealed with anything besides a small piece of scotch tape(unless it’s an animal requiring colored vinyl or electrical tape. Say venomous, bigger reptiles that are able to push the lid off if not fully taped down) it’s flag number 3. Again I’m not saying “you should’ve known” bc I’ve been taken the same way just different animal, different season as it was a summer expo so the whole arena was full of vendors tables from the hallways inside to the inner arena floor itself. Unfortunately it’s the reptile hobby & very unfortunate there’s slime balls out there who aren’t in it for anything besides the money & to get over on ppl. They don’t care about their animals and like you said that animal had lived its whole life in an expo display case, lacking proper nutrients, proper diet, proper heat, humidity, etc. they likely get put in a van under some garbage light bulbs and taken to the next show. It sucks but again it’s reptiles. Why we don’t band together as a community of responsible keepers who actually take care of and love our animals and start CALLING OUT THESE DISHONEST, CRAPPY VENDORS BY NAME EITHER THEIR PERSONAL NAME OR BETTER YET IF THEY HAVE A “BUSINESS” AND START BLACK LISTING THESE PEOPLE 1 EXPO AT A TIME! I’m sure they’d be repeat offenders the first few times the list was started but once word gets out the show coordinators will start checking the list and comparing the names & even better PHOTOS if possible to applicants they’ve had apply for a table and a spot & denying a spot to them!

    • @Zettysreptiles

      I agree with the sentiment. I should have known. I think you prepare for it to happen, but don’t fully prepare until AFTER it happens once. I do believe these people are not the majority. The problem is one bad egg can mass produce on a scale like no other because they ethically don’t care about the reptiles.

    It's a shame you have to check your purchase before you leave the drive thru at a reptile expo. It also sucks that people who are that dishonest are breeders. It's kinda honorable that you're willing to hold yourself accountable in this scenario, but you really bear no fault. No one can be on their toes 100% of the time, especially when theyre dealing within their own community. You've gotta be so soooo low to prey on someone's trust in that way. People like that shouldn't even own plants.

    He committed fraud and you have all rights to go to small claims court and get him punished

    • @Zettysreptiles
      @Zettysreptiles  5 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, I think it’s commonly pronounced invariably.. but the correct pronunciation is Anole-e. You are right.
      I have documented pictures from the show, and of the received reptile.
      As far as small claims, it’s not worth it. Tbf it was only $100 and bringing attention to the matter is more important to me, than recovering the money. Aside from documenting the case as proof of their negligence toward their reptiles, I think we can satisfy that outside of any court. Not to mention my word against theirs won’t really hold any evidence. They could say that they mistakenly missexed the reptile and it crashed upon having the egg. That’s a pretty solid argument.
      That’s also the reason I’m not outing them immediately. Although I strongly believe that’s not the case- I want to hear it from their mouth.

      I understand there’s frustration that I didn’t name the business. To be honest- I probably won’t. I think throwing a business on blast should only be done when 100% of your story is backed up and supported, and after all, you’ve only heard half the story. Are they scum in my eyes? Absolutely!
      I talked to the breeder and made a report to the host.
      Did they try to reconcile? Yes. Was it to late? Yes.
      My intentions of the video was to show people that you can get scammed regardless of your experience with reptiles. The intention wasn’t to make it a drama raid.

      If you can't hear anything, clean the microphone out. It's a common problem. Use a dry, unused toothbrush, and if that doesn't help at all, go to the phone service for cleaning/repair. Or go to your phones store you got it from, and ask for a deep clean. May cost a few bucks given today's prices to even replace or update a phone, but repairs/cleaning isn't that awful yet unless they find damage.
      Source: I'm a dirty person with skin issues and major dandruff. This causes bad clogging sometimes- Cleaning my phone is a nightmare, especially if it gets to the point I need a deep clean done by a professional- my old s7 was badly, badly clogged way before I had to update to my a11 against my consent/choice-
