Morse code is no longer a requirement for use by International shipping and the like. Many digital modes of transmission can be copied well below the noise level and technically they can operate within great levels of interference and at low signal levels. Morse code, though is a great mode for use within amateur radio. It requires skill to be able to operate it, and accordingly is great training for any radio operators. It also is simple, requiring just on-off keying and this means that it can be copied at lower levels than other analogue modes like FM, AM and SSB, etc. Its simplicity also means that it is relatively easy to build one's pwn equipment for it. IN view of these advantages and the fat that people like using it, Morse code is still a very relevant niche mode to use for the modern day amateur radio bands.
