Stumbled into this on lazy Sunday morning. Really enjoyed it, provoked many memories. I was a Chelmsford College Dovedales in 1986 too.

Well illustrates how good tree planting and vegetation can soften and improve hard urban landscape and new developments.

Lived about 20 mins from Chelmsford in the younger days, went to Chelmsford College of Further Education up Moulsham Street in very early 80's via doing an engineering apprenticeship at Marconi Radar in Writtle Road. Hated it then but don't regret it now, real knowledge and reading books them days. No Google or S/media then to look stuff up.
Some of them photos bring back some memories, young, skint, barely afford a car let alone drive it, so walked many places which is why I think I recognise some parts. Oh they were the days 😢
Wonder if any of the engineering lecturers from them days are still alive!!! 😮

Many thanks for all the positive feedback, which really surprised me. I have many more photos I took in the late 80s that need 'nowing' so will set about this task when time permits a visit back to Chelmsford. Thanks again for the comments, and it is really good to learn there are others interested in these kinds of changes. Rgds S/C.

I moved to Chelmsford (Chelmer Road) back in 1989 until 2013. Biggest mistake of my Life leaving Chelmsford to live Overseas, just wish I could afford to return.

A trip down memory lane. I lived at Little Baddow but worked in Chelmsford back in the 1980's. Thanks for posting this.

I enjoyed this video very much . Although I have lived in Chelmsford for nearly 50 years some of the shots I found difficult to determine their location . Perhaps you could do another collection of the same areas in the next couple of years and put notes on the screen to help identification . Excellent work .

    Great vid. Really enjoyed it.
Being a born an raised Chelmsfordian (1961)
now living in the States, I cherish these memories of where I grew up.
around 1985 I did a project for myself, and took photos in the same position as Fred Spalding's ...as near as damn it. Its a fascinating history lesson.
Give my love to Chelmsford. x

Man I'm way too young to know any of this (born in 97) so this is pretty cool to look back on. Hasn't changed too much, but the main difference seems to be that Chelmsford is waaaay greener and has lots of large buildings dotted around now.

Ive never heard of Chelmsford. Have no idea where it is, but this made me feel very sad and nostalgic. Time marches on. Time waits for no one.

Nice. I left Chelmsford in '71 and have hardly been back since so, apart from the station railway bridge and the White Horse at Widford, I recognise very little of this. The old footbridge that used to be the entry to New Writtle Street stadium is still there in Central Park I see (but, sadly, the stadium is long gone). Someone else has posted a vid of the town centre in 1963. That's how I remember the place!

Interesting to see what it looked like before I moved into the area 4yrs ago & how much better it is. 3yrs on & there are changes already in the city centre & a lot more to come. So think what it be like then compared to 1986.

Well done, agree with Rossco, Chelmsford is much greener, or could it be the time of year the photo's were taken adding to the effect a little.

Fantastic. I was born in 1986 and cant believe just how much better the town looks now. So much more green in these areas now.
And what a mess the town looked in 1986.

    • @mikekaraoke
      @mikekaraoke 9 лет назад +2

+steveaki13 It didn't look like a mess at all in 86, When I have seen other ones from Bromley or Bexleyheath in Kent they haven't changed much- and it didn't show you all of Chelmsford did it? as there were many places back in 86 where there was a'lot of green
Also some of the photos that were shown had building work going on- building things that are now houses/shops

It seems it was a little depressing because the 1986 photos were taken in autumn, whereas the newer photos were taken in lush summer as opposed in autumn.
