Tesla Model Y DIY Xpel PPF - Doors and Pillar

  • One of the best things we did with our last Tesla Model Y was to install a DIY precut kit from 3M. This time we have teamed up with Drive Protected Shop to install another DIY kit, this time from Xpel.
    Installing a PPF kit on a Tesla Model Y, or any Tesla for that matter, is not a super easy process. That said, you stand to save a boat load of money if you are willing to give it a try!
    For best results, ensure your slip and slick solution are properly mixed, and make sure to keep the film wet until you are ready to lay the material down permanently. Start with the A Pillar at the front and work towards the back. Get the PPF material right at the edge where the trim is. For the doors, start on one top corner, then the bottom corner on the same side. Then go to the other top corner and the following bottom corner.
    Make sure to use your tac solution to secure corners down while you work each panel. The more light the better for helping to find and remove debris and moisture from under the film.
    All Tesla kits, Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y will save 20% by using code BTG on the site.

  • @webx135

    I did exactly this, but with the North Tints set you recommended in the past!
    In my case, I worked from the top down. Once the top is tacked in, the rest can hang more or less like a curtain, so it doesn't try to slip away. And since it is open downward, you get less dirt and dust, and the slip can drain better.
    Then I got a 2-gallon pump sprayer and filled it with slip solution. Used nearly all of it. I was absolutely dumping the stuff on after I failed last time. Adding slip to the surface is extremely important for proper squeegeeing.
    The biggest difference from my first try to my second try was in doing long, overlapping passes from the center out. This made a massive difference in reducing bubbles. Once the stuff sticks, it is a HUGE pain to get bubbles out. They will insist on being stuck in place.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  2 года назад +1

      Congrats on going for it! I bet you feel pretty good knowing you saved quite a bundle of money doing it yourself.

    • @webx135
      @webx135 2 года назад

      OMG Def! Your videos helped push me to do it.
      Though what I actually did was have the front bumper done professionally since I don't have enough hands or patience, and that was the part I wanted done right. I believe that was 1200 for the front-end with XPEL.
      Then I figured I would do other parts of the car myself. So I got the North Tints door kit for like $288. Tried it myself. Failed because my garage gets hot so I kept losing my slip solution. Watched some more videos. They gave me replacement sheets for like half cost and I tried again.
      Then I bought some rolls of 3M PPF from Amazon and covered the "spoiler" as well as the loading lip.
      Then I put 303 Graphene on everything to finish it up.
      I just like not having to worry about people bumping my door or people leaning against the car with jeans.

    Thanks for the video and the discount code!
    I’m going to contact them regarding oversizing the kit. I know xpel’s software can let you tweak what you send to the plotter. I personally want extra material to wrap every corner or go behind trim. Might end up being more cost effective to just buy a whole role and cut it myself.
    I originally planned on just doing a vinyl wrap but less protection plus the fact that vinyl has a materials shortage and is very hard to find right now has pushed me towards investing in ppf instead.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  2 года назад +2

      You should talk to them on the phone then just to be sure you get what you want. These pre cuts had a nice edge to wrap on everything as is but talk to them to be sure it’s what you want

    • @BenWilliams
      @BenWilliams 2 года назад

      @@BeardedTeslaGuy yeah it did seem like you had a little extra to wrap which is what I would want. But I would prefer to tuck into the trim and door handles vs right up to it. I also plan to go with the stealth ppf which definitely needs to wrap more otherwise it doesn’t look as good.
      Your video was definitely helpful though! I’ve messed with vinyl wrapping trim before but haven’t touched ppf which is definitely a different approach to the install.
