  • Is Soy bad for you?
In this episode you will learn what happens when you eat soy.
'What Happens When' is the series where Plant Based News’ takes a deep dive into the topics that concern our health and wellbeing and hear from experts who debunk some of the most common myths.
The soybean is one of the most versatile food sources. Edamame, soymilk, tofu, sprouts, miso, tempeh, soy sauce - foods made of soy in both unfermented and fermented form have been the bedrock of Asian cuisine for millennia.
But since its rise in popularity in Western cuisine over the past 60 years, soy and its effects on the body have become the object of many studies, myths, and debates.

For real. I have been dying to meet sexy and cute feminine boys who ate a lot of soy. But then I realized the ones who ate a large quantity of soy in their diet look very fit. And guys who eat mainly meat and dairis are getting even more cute and feminine without barely any soy at all.

I have been vegetarian for 37 years and vegan on and off since 2006, but now fully vegan. Brought my kids up vegetarian and got worried about soy for various reasons and looked into it when the internet wasn't so controlled and you could usually easily find the scope of information you were looking for.
I came to the conclusion that GM soy was very different in the types and quantities of phytoestrogens than ordinary soy, especially with the high levels of glyphosate used to grow them, as the purpose of the GM modification is to tolerate insane dosages that kill everything else. Part of the protective response seems to be to produce ranges of photoestrogens. Particularly now that it is surfacing how toxic glyphosate is in unexpected ways, completely obliterating soil microbiomes, the damaging knock on effects down the food chain are barely studied. However most GM soy is animal feed. Most of the soy products I buy are either organic or non gmo.i have no concerns about real soy. Any issues with GM soy are likely to be concentrated up the food chain, so we need to look to farm animals and milk products for their knock on effects

I'm in year 10 as a vegan and I've been consuming soy products for around 15 years, and have not had any health issues that the anti-soy crowd believes. It's annoying how the anti-vegans portray vegans as the reason for deforestation when 75% of soy is grown for livestock feed.

Great Video, as always. However, i do disagree with something you said (at 07:47) . You said “The Humble Soy Bean is FUNDAMENTAL to Plant Based Diets”.
    Definition: Fundamental (adjective):
“forming a necessary base or core; of central importance.”
I’m sorry, but that is simply not true. I’ve been Vegan (and eat a WFPB diet) for over 11 years, and i can count on 1 hand the number of times I’ve had ANY soy products (i actually can’t think of any times.. but i’m sure maybe once or twice in a restaurant). Soy is part of many people’s PB diet. Yes of course. But it’s no more “Fundamental” than Watermelon or Sumo Oranges or Asparagus. You CAN choose to eat it, or you can choose not to and still be just fine (ie. It’s not Fundamental).
An example of something that is Fundamental would be WATER. Or a B12 supplement. ie. you NEED to consume it or you will suffer health consequences. Soy isn’t NECESSARY if you’re eating a PB diet. It’s just popular for many people (not me), and I’m super healthy and an elite level (former professional) athlete.
I don’t believe any of the dumb myths about soy. That isn’t why i avoid it. I just don’t like it. That’s it. I know it’s super healthy, but so are the other 130+ plants i choose to each every week. And without soy, I’m not suffering.
Sorry to go on a tangent about this, but i think saying it’s “Fundamental” could turn some plant-curious meat eaters off of going Vegan. If i was a meat eater, and i was CONSIDERING trying a PB diet, then i heard “Soy if Fundamental”, that could turn me off completely and make me reconsider trying a PB diet. If i was told “You MUST eat Soy if you want to be vegan”, then i wouldn’t want to be vegan. So saying that can actually be harmful to our movement, not helpful. Hence my long response.

But.. What a daunting fact that I would have to tell my parents at Sunday gatherings, every restaurant meal, every takeaway and home cooked meal.
I have never been great at explaining myself to other people, confrontation was never my strong subject because I would have to know what I am saying and how I say it.
If anyone tries to debate me on Veganism, somehow I can easily tell them the simple facts and wow them because it is so easy on why to be vegan, but anything else I struggle with. 🤷

What about soybean oil? I’ve heard the process used to make soybean oil is similar to how diesel is made. Is this true and where are the studies proving the oil is safe since it’s in many foods.

Animal vs. Plant Protein: New Research Suggests That These Protein Sources Are Not Nutritionally Equivalent.
It sounds like they are saying what i already know.. I gotta eat more plant based protein to equal the amount of animal protein. Well I know that but I well not be getting all the other things that come with animal protein. Thoughts?

Before I say this, for the record, I’ve eaten mostly vegan (I eat fish occasionally, maybe once a week to once every two weeks) and foods that contain egg or dairy occasionally (like bread with egg or something that was made with milk but it’s really very occasionally) for close to 3 decades. I started out a bad semi-vegetarian, eating a lot of fake meat products, but some good things like beans, but for the last few years I’ve felt like I probably eat too much tofu (for the record, mostly USDA organic, product of USA, plain tofu) about 1/4 - 1/3 pkg. a day most days of the week (maybe 5-6). Recently, in addition to too much soy, I also have been eating more fake meat products, and added ground flaxseed to my diet (the other big phytoestrogen besides soy). I also am obese and mostly sedentary, and eat too much refined sugar. A few months ago, I started having some symptoms that looked like uterine fibroids (or menopause, which shares some symptoms), after a few months of increasing pain and heavy periods, I could feel a mass, and made an OBGYN appt. One morning I was having heavy clotted blood and just did not feel like I could wait another week and a half for this OBGYN appointment, so I went to my local hospital’s ER, and they did some imaging and said that the mass appeared to be a large fibroid. In a way, I feel lucky because where it was, the ER OBGYN was able to remove it without me having to go through complicated surgery, but having that done with only a pain pill was pretty painful nonetheless, and since then, I’ve done a lot of research on phytoestrogens and soy and I know the studies are quite mixed, and both my GP and OBGYN didn’t think soy was a problem, but for woman who have way too much estrogen going on, I just really think that it is another estrogen piled onto the estrogens. Maybe if I cut out a lot of estrogen through exercise, getting to a proper weight for my height, balancing my hormones better, etc. phytoestrogens like soy and flax wouldn’t contribute so much to my estrogen dominance, but really, how many of the healthiest cultures or groups of people around the world regularly eat ground flax from a bag every day, or tofu from a box? Not that many countries or people really. I don’t think flax is big in Asia, and I don’t think tofu is big in Europe. So probably, we don’t NEED flax and soy in our diet. We need healthy nutrient dense food, but we don’t NEED flax or soy, so while I see a lot of tofu-eating guys commenting on here about not having breasts or whatnot. Good for you, and if soy works for you, great! But I would encourage all women who are having issues with uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts, things that bind to estrogen, to just cut out the soy for a few months (AND dairy, especially cheese if you’re not vegan) and IN ADDITION to cutting out refined sugar, white carbs, exercising daily, moving towards a healthy weight for your height, and getting fresh air and sunlight, on a good sleep schedule, and balancing your hormones, I’d encourage women to cut out the flax and soy. For sure the fake meat, but even the organic tofu (at least for the most part, for a few months) and just see if it helps. Tofu is an easy food because it takes on the taste of anything you cook in, and beans, lentils, peas, quinoa, and vegetables do not. You have to think more, about how to prepare them or what to eat them with so that they have a more vibrant taste, but I really think it might help you. I can’t know for sure, because I had the one fibroid I knew about removed, but I’ve been adding more beans, lentils, peas, quinoa, and vegetables to my diet, as well as replacing refined sugar (for the most part) with fruit, adding more exercise, and getting more sunlight, fresh air, trying to balance my hormones, and getting proper sleep at the proper hours, and so far for two months now, I’m feeling much better. I think soy works well for some people, and maybe some of the cultures that eat soy more regularly, are genetically better able to handle it, I don’t know. But not every country or group of people that lives long healthy lives eats soy, so I really just don’t think it’s necessary for a healthy vegan or mostly plant based diet. I think you can get enough protein from other plant proteins and vegetables. I know that tofu is only lightly processed (I’ve eaten it for decades), but too much is maybe still too much even of a “good thing”. I’ve read that natto - fermented soy beans - an acquired taste, but one I’ve acquired, are Ok because they’re fermented, and so is miso which is also fermented, so I may add those back into my diet eventually, but not right now. I’ve also read that tempeh, which is lightly fermented is Ok too, so many in the future, I’ll experiment with adding some of the fermented soy foods, but for now, I’ve eating hardly any tofu, swapped soy milk for oat milk (which I only use in small amounts anyway) and just basically have been eating mostly Whole Foods plant based and mostly vegan without soy or flax, and I feel good abs my period is normal once again, for the time being. I definitely don’t want the months long experience I had of pain and heavy bleeding and anemia and almost passing out to happen again, so I can give up soy for awhile and see if it seems to help. And I really hope all you woman with similar problems to mine will consider cutting out soy (and dairy, and meat, exercising more, cutting out refined white carbs and refined sugar to see if it helps you too. It can’t hurt, so why not try?

If you have ear wax, nose snot, smelly armpits, eye mucus, teeth plaque, skin issues you still have mucus. Rare are those who are mucus free and usually you can only be mucus free if you do intense physical exercise, long term fasting, living in clean environments or fruit/juice-based diet/lifestyle.

@@truesight91 Mucus lines the moist surfaces of your body like the lungs, sinuses, mouth, stomach, and intestines. Even your eyes are coated with a thin layer of mucus. It serves as a lubricant to keep tissues from drying out. It's also a line of defense. It sounds like you have ocd. Mucus is literally natural. Like I said since going meat and dairy free I don’t suffer with excessive mucus anymore and certainly not smelly armpits 😂
A 2006 study on body odour found that people eating plant-based smelled significantly better than those eating meat.

The elephant in the room, as far as any foods are concerned, are how local and seasonal they are. There's a difference in consuming, say, cinnamon as a spice and sourcing it from exotic lands Vs sourcing a staple from afar. The reason northern European countries began eating cheese, milk, meat, etc is because, without greenhouses/polytunnel, the season is May - January. Unless we are canning excess foods during that season, like any country, we rely on (in the main) a poorer country to provide not only soy, but fruits and veg all year round. For me, it's interesting to learn more about soy but there's a broader darker question here that is overshadowed by the supposed evil meat eaters. The debate should never be vegans V veggies V meat eaters...but how, in our localities, do we eat while living lightly on the planet?

The West is too obsessed with labeling that everything they do making them masculine or feminine!
There's no thing masculine or feminine except some physical bone structure and because of that some secondary gender action which gave us the vibe of women being feminine and men being masculine.
But people use it interchangeably with some personalities which are considered stereotypically womanly/feminine or manly/ masculine, which is nothing but sexism which is doing nothing but harming our society.
If someone is gentle and caring then they are gentle and caring not feminine, same goes for being confident or bold it's just being confident and bold doesn't making anybody masculine.
