I'm 6 years late but this was an excellent review on this obscure part of the series. Found myself agreeing with most all your points, although I didn't enjoy my experience with the game overall. Glad to find someone who did. Well done!
thanks. ha yeah , if you've played Castlevania on an NES first , this one would be a bit of an acquired taste. For me, having discovered this game before I'd even heard of the NES, this remains my definitive version of Castlevania . Matter of taste I suppose. If anything it's an interesting entry in the series .
Wow. This is incredibly interesting. It really gives a whole new perspective on Castlevania 2 versus the original Castlevania on the NES. You can see where they were kind of merging the two, and US gamers had no idea where the exploration aspect came from in C2. Great video. Thanks for the interesting perspective. :D
I actually always thought that this game was the reason why Simin's Quest or Accursed Seal was the way it was. The MSX was the prefered platform in Japan before the Famicom took off, so it makes sense the sequel carried more of the rpg elements from the MSX game.
And to think with my level of MSX bias/history this is another game that I did not know about until I got back into MSX about 8 years ago. Mainly due to that MSX 2 was only present as something you could order through one of the club magazines and for way more money than I could afford back then, so everything was about the MSX 1 machines until I moved onto the Amiga and Atari ST. I have only had a copy for the last four years, but unfortunately haven't been able to put enough time into it to finish it. I don't think I have anything else that is going to beat it to be selected for my A-Z videos (only three letters to go as of typing), we shall see :)
Cool review! Obviously the MSX/MSX2 is not on a lot of radars for folks in the states, but luckily I had a few buddies who were obsessed with Metal Gear Solid enough to emulate Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 as well as a bunch of MSX2 games when we were in high school like 15 years ago. We got a lot of enjoyment out of the Konami catalog there. How does the hardware hold up over time? Would it be worth trying to track down or import?
+J Myers well I'm probably the worst person to ask since I'm so biased but yeah. I think it holds up well as a computer and a gaming machine. the konami games were especially good.
From my own research, tracking down MSX games and consoles is a nightmare and expensive. The most common problem is going to be finding the proper cables for the unit you are looking to buy. Most of the ones on eBay have the video output cables and console, but lack the power cable. This to me is a sketchy situation because if you dont use the correct power supply you run the risk of bricking your $200+ system. The games also range from $100+ to straight up nonexistent for sale.
Yay this review! I actually just beat this game recently -- like, legitimately! Only lost one life the whole time. And man, what a rush it was! Also beat Fire Hawk recently, too, so I'm kinda feeling like THE MAN these days. Gotta keep challenging myself with new MSX games to keep this adrenaline rush going! ;)
+Wyrdwad good on ya. it's not impossible to beat it once you get into the rythm actually. I remember the first time I finished it feeling so proud of myself. I'm preparing a gameplay footage video of it for this weekend btw ;)
