I bought the fab filter bundle and I agree, it is very hard to get a good sound and sometimes I end up doing more harm than good. Wavesfactory is on a roll and quickly becoming one of my favorite companies
Oh, this one is a no-brainer. When mixing in context with any vocal/instrument/mix/track, you can dial in ANYTHING you want, in a frequency-specific manner that I find not only easy to achieve, but the sound manipulation possibilities become literally infinite!!! Love this plugin! Thanks for this video!!!!
I went out and bought it after seeing this review... And that was money WELL spent. I'm still a noob and don't really know what the hell I'm doing, but just fiddling with this thing for a few seconds made EVERYTHING sound infinitely more satisfying to my ears. I also have Saturn already, and I concur -- it takes a lot more work to sculpt a good sound with that one.
You can also eq the sound going into a saturator. The louder the frequency, the more it will be affected by the saturator. If you want a fat bass, boost your lows going into the saturator. You can put an eq afterwards if you want
yeah i sometimes pull the mids down on muddy guitars or synths (or any annoying resonance) into a saturator and it will be cleaner allowing me to maybe add a bit more saturation
- I’m not talking about reviews in plugin alliance. I’m talking about industry reviews, other youtubers and people on Gearskutz. People seem to unanimously praise this plugin except costinvaly1 above ^^. What do you think of VSM-3? I haven’t tried Satin or others to compare it to.
@@costinvaly1 - I know Gearslutz is not the industry but plenty of pro and experienced users there who have praised this plugin which still makes this person above the only exception to this plugin I've come across.
although the ui of this plugin is very nice and it uses 16x oversampling, the concept is relatively easy to replicate using Ableton Live's Audio effect racks. Create an audio effect rack with a wet and a dry signal chain, create a rack within the wet chain that contains the original signal and another chain with the polarity flipped, these will cancel each other out, but if you add an eq to one then the result of this wet chain will be the difference (any freq range you boost or cut), add your favourite saturation plugins to the end of that wet chain and you have your original signal and a difference signal with saturation applied. This same technique can be used with a compressor to create dynamic distortion (softube harmonics?) and many other unique effects. The only problem is that some plugins don't report their latency correctly and therefore create phase cancellations, comb filtering or other issues, so using ableton's native effects avoids this or you can use plugins that report latency correctly such as fabfilter plugins and lots of others. I will do a video on this at some point and have some free racks to give away as examples.
Do you think it can be used for lowend (kick or bass), instead of compressing, does it have advantage over this? By the way Process Audio Sugar is awesome, I bought it after your video and I'm a part of beta team. My favourite is Blackbox HG-2 also. But this multiband looks like something new. I love Fabfilter, but Saturn give me too harsh, digital and cheap sounding results no matter how many knobs I fiddle :-D
That looks really interesting! I think I’m going to go buy that thing! Thank you again for joining me in a video this weekend! It was really fun to talk to you.
MeldaProduction has a multiband saturator (MSaturatorMB), up to 6 bands, each with 9 type of saturation, upsampling up to 16x. It's the same category of the plugin. Maybe review/comparison of that one too, Wytse?
I wrote of melda for the interface... Boy was i wrong... I played with the free bundle, then paid for the extra options... cheap , but bloody hell..... some voodoo code in those plugs.. I think im going melda all the way.
Boosting adds noise of the recorded signal so, in general bad idea for a mix. Boosting on the other hand can correct losses of a recorded signal....it's a paradox within a black hole.

You can actually achieve the saturation EQ thing you describe with digital but it'll take a little more time. You could use the band splitters of reaper, and feed the bands into saturation plugins, and than boost the bands before the saturation.

Looking at fabfilter (129,-) and spectre (99,-) you got more control for 30 bucks. Fabfilter has user-defined MID/SIDE values, Spectre it either MID or SIDE. Fabfilter provides real-time visual feedback on the bands (clipping etc), Spectre shows the saturation range but provide no visual feedback on the processed signal .. trust your ears here (this is my biggest con for spectre). Fabfilter has an internal modulation matrix options while spectre is static. Also, the UX seems slick but changing the saturation mode or stereo/mid is done through dropdown menus. So is this selectively saturating the signal without actually EQing at all? Meaning that if you enhance a frequency with this, it's not going to take up as much space in the mix as the equivalent boost if done using an EQ?
Its an enhancer plug so its gonna create freq content that isnt there based on what is - depending on how you set it its gonna take up more space. But it could take up the same amount of space still and sound great too.
Oh wow. That tools seems to be great. I liked the sound a lot and the different possibilities per band are great. Quick great sounding results with a clean interface. They nailed it. A bit of a silly reply; as it is of course also true, that a Tube-amp running for a full day in the studio sounds different than after cooling down over night and powered up next day, again. If this is the distinct variation of sound-colour: 'tube' & 'warm tube' thats actually a pretty good move, if emulated right.
