- Gav shows you how insanely quick the inside of a DSLR camera moves when it takes a picture, by filming it at 10,000 fps.

Camera filmed is a Canon 7D.
This video is a good demonstration of how a rolling shutter works.

Hey
Mumbo!
1:11 For those who didn't notice, there is a second mirror behind the first one. The first one is semi-transparent and directs light up towards the viewfinder while the one behind it directs light down into a suite of sensors which detect focus and light intensity at various parts of the frame.
I actually didn't notice that.
Thanks mate.
wow
06:51 - "I refuse to replace it, because it still works".
I hear you.
I still have a Canon 20D which I bought in 2004 and still use because it just... works.
Why does this remind me of Canon in D lmao
I'm still using a 60D, just need to get some new glass and it's still good
i'm still using a zenith Z1A, may not shoot in color, but that's what photoshop is for and a film scanner
I bought an pentax k20d back in 2007 and it is still works
You bought a professional equipment. Not a consumer phone that needs to be replaced every couple of years.
Gavin is possibly one of the most humble guys you will ever meet. I think he puts on an act a lot of the time and purposefully takes the censor off all those silly little moments you get in your brain and lets them loose when with Rooster Teeth but he is actually a genuinely super smart guy. this stuff is so fascinating, and if you ever said to him "Gavin, you're actually really smart" I think he'd deny it until he was blue in the face. It's one of the main reasons why he's one of my favourite guys, he's just genuine and awesome and adorable. Thanks for showing this, I hope it didn't ruin your camera too much taking pictures without the lens on dude!
***** as if thats being a piece of shit, he's said before how busy he is at cons going to and from panels. he'll say hi to a million fans but for the one time he doesn't cause he's in a rush he gets shits on
***** When he is at cons, he has a schedule. He needs to be at point A at x time and point B at y time. Pretending to be on the phone helps him sift through the crowd. I am sure if the fan approached him anywhere else, he would have been glad to chat.
No, he is definitely a piece of shit.
***** I do not deny that, but at cons, he has a schedule that he needs to keep. The fan should have attempted to see him later in the day.
robin bb He also explained why he didn't say hi.
Gavin is an extremely intelligent guy. He just happens to be the butt of all the jokes at work and tends to form sentences in a funny way so nobody takes his intelligence seriously.
Everybody at RT knows he's really smart, he just says all the dumb stuff most people filter out.
I can't say for sure that Gavin is smart in the way that we think of "smart". But he knows his stuff about film and photography and is undoubtedly smart about that stuff. I really enjoyed watching this video. It was fun, listening to him explain everything.
people like grapes
how do worlds good
the sky is bigger than the ground
the list goes on and on
He just has very limited intelligence really. He knows cameras and he knows them as well as anyone.
He just doesn't have a filter most of the time- he says whatever comes to his head.
Probably my favorite example of this is, "do babies float?"
Gav just taught me more about photography in one video than 3 weeks of my journalism semester.

Many people call Gavin an idiot, but I personally think he plays it up a bit in RT/AH stuff, just for comedic value. Not saying that some of his questions aren't really weird and dumb and oddly worded, but I think he's way more intelligent than people give him credit for. The dude could easily teach a Bill Nye esque motion photography class.
most people should know that, I'm sad when people don't...
Thats obvious, I can't believe people don't understand this...
Gavin is smart on SLG
But seems dumb on RT
Why is that?
He thinks different than other people do, so the things he says seem idiotic. If you understand what hes trying to say, theyre usually not terrible ideas, he just presents them in a way that sounds stupid.
I don't think he's an idiot, I just think sometimes he can't find the right words to explain his thought.
Why am I learning more from this then a full 2 weeks in my photo class in highschool?
***** Most accurate thing I've read.
***** wow, you are one edgy 14 year old
Because public school is a massive waste of time. Just get your diploma early and better your knowledge with your own research talking to experts instead of poorly paid people with a technical degree in schooling
***** Correction: most teenagers don't learn crap because they don't pay attention.
Because you don't need to know this for photography and need to practice over and over again to improve?
All I gotta say is thank you. About an hour ago, I realised that today is the moon eclipse and my dad has a pretty good camera and he was asleep while it was happening, so I got it and tried to take a picture of the moon as the eclipse was just starting and all I had was a big white dot with a black background, I had no clue what I was doing wrong then I suddenly remembered watching this video when it came out and I instantly remembered what Gavin said about the more time it is exposed to whatever it is you're taking a picture of, the brighter it is going to be (something along those lines), so it instantly made sense in my head and I got a few decent snaps of the moon eclipse (decent for a camera noob anyway). Who said RUclips wasn't a place for education? Even though It was a long time ago I watched this video, I instantly remembered all the info provided in which i used to take the moon when it was bright using fast shutter speed and when the moon was red I used slow shutter speed and it all worked. So once again thank you!
Watched it years ago and did not completely understand it. Now, as a grown photographer, i fully understand it and probably show it to other People, if they want to understand a mechanical shutter! Thanks Gav!
I respect the choice to keep the camera that has been through a slow hell and back. and when it does die, it should be put on display
Its a canon. Those things are tanks.
Not sure a nikon would have held up anywhere near as long.
Uh oh..fanboy alert.

Dan is smart in the grenade video. That one is even more strange.
Hes in his element. The guy is a genius when it comes to photography
Jack Caponi True!
InternetsNathan You know the whole Gavin being dumb shtick is an act, right?
As someone who knows nothing about photography, and the way cameras work, this was surprisingly interesting. Thanks for that explanation. I will never look at my camera the same again, knowing it 'renders' the pic from top to bottom. That fascinated me the most. The way the shadow hit the face before the cork did, and the way things are vertical when filming while driving. Great video, thanks for (somehow) making my day :D
are not vertical *
YOLOMAN SWAGGER Woops, meant to say 'diagonal' and 'not vertical'. Mixed the two up ;)
Even without shutter speed issues, the shadow would appear to hit the face first because of the issue of perspective from the sun, and the way the shadow is cast. This was a horrible example. Try it outside, you can make it look like you're slapping your face when your hand is 2ft away, it's all about perspective.
That actual footage of the different gap between the various shutter speeds was amazing to witness. I didn’t know they worked that way. So, cheers for this education.

@ Shaggy Dawg The shutter does indeed jiggle (on all SLR cameras with that type of shutter), you saw it in the video. It's just a matter of scale and speed. It still niggles at the back of my mind when I'm handling cameras how fragile they can be, but I've been using an F100 and F5 for decades with no problems... yet. "I refuse to replace it because it still works"
I wish everyone thought this way when it comes to smart phone, but everyone needs the latest and greatest so they keep buying new ones to replace perfectly good older models. Thanks for setting an example!
Ehhhhhh. Theres nothing wrong with people always striving to buy the latest and greatest stuff, because it keeps the world moving. Whats really important is that you don't forget to take care of the things you already have.

Its like having smartphones for all purposes and don't want to trow one away just because it is ugly.
+Ryan Penrod It really depends on your definition of "perfectly good." Say the next generation has double the RAM, and I multi-task on my phone a lot. There's a lot of incentive for me to upgrade. And it's just that - an upgrade. I'm paying to get something I know to be better.
Of course I acknowledge that the average smartphone user most certainly doesn't use this kind of reasoning to decide whether or not to purchase a new phone.

Gawwwwwd!!! The picture at 5:21 just blew my mind. I felt an epiphany for a spur of the moment. It seemed like they are living in a world where the speed of shadow travelled faster than light, which could be a pretty good piece of science fiction.
Interesting. The shutter doesn't actually seem to move any faster for a "faster shutter speed". Just a smaller delay between the bottom and the top.
somebody once told me the mechanism that causes movement in these can't control the "speed" of the shutter because it's driven by a super fast spring. So rather than controlling the spring, they control the size of the gap, which is more cost-effective. It's possible to control the actual speed (with global shutter systems) but it's a different type of tech.
its meant for how much time the sensor is exposed
+Andrew Ydna DuBuc what would happen if you put you finger in that thing
Super Gogeta ouch I wouldn't want to find out!

Michel Silva he might open a black hole
Yeah, the one thing I'm not getting here is how the "global" shutter manages to expose and then obscure the entire image all in one go...
@@mspenrice They are not mechanical shutters, they are electronic shutter. in a GLOBAL shutter all the pixels are turned on at one time to absorb light and then turned off. this processed the entire image at one time. a rolling shutter turns on the pixels line by line usually from top to bottom (like a CRT TV - See Slow Mo video). each line of pixels are processed individually and then the entire image is created.

Now, do a mirrorless camera.
I still don't understand why these cameras click.
+Farie Indriawan The shutter still has to come up. But mostly it's to let you know that you've just taken a picture.
TheMitchDoes I think that's a good reason why it clicks.
+Farie Indriawan there are MILC cameras with the same kind of rolling shutter as the camera in this video so it makes the same noise minus the mirror flapping. (one example would be the Pentax K-01 for this type) There are other MILC cameras like the Pentax Q series that have some lenses with built in leaf shutters. If you use a lens with these cameras that have no leaf shutters it will use the electric shutter, like when you are shooting a video, and it will be silent.
+Farie Indriawan because it still has a shutter. For example, with my fuji xt1. If I take a photo with the shutter of a moving car, it wont be wonky. If I use the electronic shutter, it will be wonky.
5:55 I seriously thought those were ghost traps from Ghostbusters.
hahaha, me too
I actually feel like I've learned something rather valuable about fotography from this one, so a belated cheers, mate!
This is interesting... The shutter moves at the same speed no matter what shutter speed is set. Instead the size of the gap changes.
I wonder what kind of creative lateral thinking turned the idea of moving mechanics at sub-second speeds into the relatively simple task of moving a mechanism at one speed, but just adjusting a gap between parts of it.
That's really interesting. I did wonder how they reached higher shutter speeds without hitting a mechanical limit of some sort, before it perhaps tore itself apart.
You could probably work out how big the gap should be give the size of the sensor and the speed of the shutter fairly easily.
I did think only iPhones did the "scan line" top to bottom thing, this irritates me for a DSLR, I thought part of paying extra was to have the whole sensor exposed at once, I wonder how this compares to a film camera, I always thought that the mirror also doubled as the shutter, never thought beyond that assumption, bah.
Very old mechanical film cameras never really reached above 1/500, mostly just operating to the limit of what a spring can do.
If you think carefully, there's actually no need for a physical shutter at all. The sensor can just be sampled line by line (which is how data comes out of a CMOS image sensor any way).
I guess not! Have you seen those RUclips tutorial videos where somebody turns a regular scanner into a camera?
Just did a quick google, the shutter is two "curtains" one attaches to the top and one to the bottom. Whilst one is opening the other is closing whilst maintaining the gap in the middle. I wonder if you could get even faster shutter speeds using a rotating drum with an adjustable hole in it.
But yes, what would the point be when technically they don't need one anymore :)
Phill Holland I've used a DSLR for a long time now and never run into any issues with the scanline. You can't really compare it to what happens with phone cameras.
Early cameras took longish exposures by opening the shutter and holding it until a mechanical timer ran out, so I guess you can thank whoever invented that mechanism.
I hate to correct you, but the shutter blades are made out of teflon, not metal, because the latter would be way too heavy to move it with the speed required.
Thumbs up for working with gear that works rather than the newest hyped toy.
GAV! This is one of the BEST videos on your channel! Thank you for this! Your explanation is so well articulated. I have a Canon slr and really enjoyed it. *p.s. Not hitting on you but everything about you in this video is incredibly attractive. God bless your soul : )
This is one of the best talk about camera.
4:50 This sounds like information that could come in handy for debunking some conspiracy theories someday.
"LoOk aT tHe sHadOw"
That is absolutley true, everytime im reading stuff like this I also point out that the camera has probably a rolling shutter.
That's what i was thinking
our eyes missed our so many cools things on earth ...
Christian Galesias You are not one of them
haha :D
No shit Sherlock
Ha
+Christian Galesias This is why we would look like slow dumb ants to any super intelligent alien race. Like NASA's first computers talking to todays PC Master Race computers.
+Chip Rosetti It's all relative, dude. I'm pretty sure the technology we have today will be laughably low tech in the future (if we survive that long)
Makes you wonder how clever Gavin actually is XD
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this was recommended to me; I was like uh okay let's try it and then wound up learning about rolling shutters. I like it.
Very interesting
but Gavin being smart, it seems so wrong
ikr
Exactly what i thought XD
Knowing about your trade doesn't necessarily make you a smart person. There are plenty of drug-riddled dunces in construction that know details about the inner workings of plumbing, framing, electrical work, etc. simply because they deal with those terms/concepts everyday. Are all mechanics 'smart' because they know more about cars than you or I do?
supose when you put it like that, but its just. its gavin... didn't expect him to be so professional!
IAMTHEJUGGERNATE but its Gavin
"I refuse to replace it, because it still works"
I have the same Samsung phone my parents gave me like 4 and half years ago because of the same statement
More learning videos! ♡
Man my 7D has stuck with me rock solid through so much, I can't believe it still works perfectly after being beaten so hard for 8 years! @canon bossed this one
shutter count?
Theslowmoguys:"I used this camera because it's still works".
Love it.
I'm so angry but also happy with this video because when I needed to learn about this there wasn't any good video that explained it this well glad others will understand better then having to do so much research
Your camera actually has both kinds of shutter. When you set a slow speed, there will be a time when the whole sensor is exposed. That is why many cameras have a maximum speed for witch you can use flash... it is the fastest speed available that will have the entire sensor uncovered simultaneously. If you try to use flash with a higher speed, you will get a black band across your image because some of the sensor was covered during the flash. These faster speeds are called slit-width speeds.
That is only for the cheaper built in flash generally limited to 1/200. With and more expensive external flash you can you use high speed sync that strobes the flash over the moving window. Why external flash is great for fill in outdoor situations. But this video is cool showing it in action.
that phantom camera cost anything between $50-$150...
thousand. 0_0
James Ray not really, it’s a canon 7D so it would probably cost around 400-700$
Breeze MC, lmao, he was talking about the Phantom, not the Canon.
oof i didnt read that sorry
K
Breeze MC I have the 7d and it is definitely not only 400-700. Mine was $1600
This was explained better than anything in my film classes lol. Thanks!!!!
