  • I live in the Pacific Northwest where there is a lot of rain, and my boat cover was pooling water in it. I didn't want it to end up ripping my 14' fishing boat's storage cover, so I checked out a lot of videos on easy ways for waterproofing my boat cover and how to cover a boat for winter. All of them showed how to build elaborate DIY boat cover support systems (or using a support pole) to get the water out of the boat cover. I didn't want to have to erect a frame every time I put the cover on my fishing boat! I opted to add drains, which are a type of boat cover vent. This allows the water to constantly be removed from the boat cover, and puddles and pooling are eliminated. The heavy rain would require me to perform boat cover repair if it got too heavy and ripped and started leaking.
My solution costs about $50 or 60, and is easily removed when you take off the boat straps and cover. No need to us boat cover support poles or some elaborate roof frame.
Here are the materials I used in this:
-First, here's my 14' fishing boat cover: amzn.to/3PNMC0T
-Oatey shower drain with SS strainer (x2): amzn.to/45rqiQD
    -Flexible reinforced hose (10ft): amzn.to/3PJBuSG
-Male 3/4" hose barb elbow with threaded 3/4" male insert (x1): amzn.to/3rN1SDm
-Male 3/4" hose barb with 3/4" threaded male insert (x1): amzn.to/45k4LJz
    -2" PVC reducing bushing to 3/4" threaded (x2): amzn.to/3rJzi5A

I decided it would be easier and more efficient to just add drains to the boat cover at the points where all the water pools up and be able to vent the water from my boat cover the easy way instead of the PVC support system with poles--and that fixed my boat cover problem! This would be how I would keep water out of my boat cover so I wouldn't have to buy a pump or build a structure in order to empty the water.
The boat cover also has an extra piece that protects and winterizes my Minn Kota trolling motor and Mercury Outboard. I recently posted some videos on how to repair an outboard pull starter rope, and appropriate batteries for a trolling motor. Those links can be found here:

If your boat is parked nose high you can get away with putting a grommet at the low points, the water will drain through the cover and down to the drain via the floor of the boat without the hose and extra fittings

Don’t let it be the end of the season yet, that’s a great boat for salmon fishing in tidewater on some of the smaller rivers at the coast!

Hey there! I agree it's too soon, but I want a more reliable motor for tidewater zones.

@@JasonSipe16totally understand. You might also want to try that boat on Netarts Bay for crabbing, if you haven’t already. During slack tide it’s basically a lake.
