  • This is to me, some of the most difficult and hard to light situations I come across. Dark wood interiors can be a nightmare to make look professional and well lit. In this tutorial, I go over all the tips and tricks that I have learned and I also share what I would have done differently for next time.

Wooden places are really hard to edit correctly, specially bungalows 😄 Nice content thank you. You’re inspiring me. 👏

You asked about our experiences with HDR. I have been using Aurora HDR 2018. I did a test with several shots from a real estate shoot (about 5 rooms) and ran then through both Aurora and Lightroom, without any presets on the the merge. The Lightroom pics appeared lower contrast and didn't have the pop that Aurora delivered. Also, the multi-step process in Lightroom takes more time. Aurora automatically identifies the sets (then gives the opportunity to confirm), enables adding a preset and naming convention to the files, plus the output file type. It's pretty simple and fast. The result is a single TIFF file that's about 114MB in size.
I have also tested different bracket sets (3 shots, 5 shots, 2 and 3 stops apart). The variations are barely noticeable. I came across someone online recommending shooting 3 shots three stops apart. I'm going to go back and see it that setup enables pulling in the windows better.
Joe, thank you for your continued contributions to your subscribers! (A growing crowd seeking your tips and advice!)

I have used aurora before but I'm just not a fan of HDR only, but I am glad you posted this comment because I'm sure your experience will help someone. Thanks again for being an active subscriber! I appreciate you!

Enfusegui with neutral jpgs. Jpgs without NR and sharpening. Import to LR with bump preset. And do 50 50 blend in PS with one flash shot.

I do this with my raw images on many rooms.

Hi Joe, you put a ton of time in that photo! And it came out really nice. I just finished a similar shoot except I had 20 foot ceilings with wood everything. Used the AD 600 and AD 400 with umbrellas, and an AD 200 for fill, using luminosity mode to blend. You are much better with the white balance techniques than I am… Thanks for showing how to use them.

I'm Def going to go back to using an umbrella for houses like this. Can you send me the link to your new listing so I can see it!

For me in this scenario I find using umbrellas way easier. A litte more time on site and way easier in post. No color issues and headache to deal with. Cool video though.

Thanks. Ya. I keep going back and forth and I guess each situation requires its own evaluation of what will have the best results. Thanks for your comment :)
