  • 311 Day 2018 Drum Solo | Applied Science Chad Sexton | Remastered Audio
I remastered the audio from this epic 311 day 2018 Chad Sexton Drum solo. I call him the machine because his funky drum beats are spot on everytime I've ever seen 311 live. Chad Sexton Drum solo during the song Applied Science at the 311 day 2018 at the Park Theater Las Vegas. The rest of the band comes out to add to the drum solo and toss the sticks around. In this performance chad sexton plays on a small bass drum, snare, hi hats and cymbal kit. Tim Mahoney also comes out and plays some guitar soloing which is something we have never seen before! What a wonderful drum solo! I love 311!

Love this so much. I grew up with Rush where Neil Peart really broke the mold on this type of thing as. he evolved from simple basic kit and compositional solos into the longer drawn out features influenced by his travels and other musical styles that affected his sensibilities. He managed to bring all of those things into a stream of consciousness that not everybody loved, but dammit, it's amazing. Chad Sexton traveled a similar path with this type of heavily nuanced, musical, visual, and dare I say "theatrical" offering. The audience forgot they were at a 311 show and drifted off into some etherial space to take a long breath and experience a different perspective. Again, not everyone loves it, like some of my friends when we were at the show. But I LOVE this type of thing. Evolution is what makes a band with almost 30 years of music interesting. They have recorded 15 studio records, of which "Music" might still be my overall favorite (I don't like to "rank"). But if all they did was record something that sounded just like that record over and over again since 1995, I wouldn't still be as interested as I am today. 311 embody their lyrics-
"Comin' on fast, it's gettin' digital
It's so huge, like a spiritual
    Rippling out to every individual
This is life, it is a miracle
    Evolution has exponential timing
It'll be half as long 'til
The next breakthrough that blows our mind
It's up to the people to brave on with
    Experimentation"

I’m sorry y’all, but I have to share a story.
I had a real good friend that was about twenty years older than me and all my fellow coworkers just thought he was really hostile. Me being a young dude made it my personal objective to make this guy my friend.
I later found out this guys favorite band was Rush and he loved Neal and more so Alex. He named his daughter after Alex. This guy was so great. He taught me so much about guitar and he would set my fret board for free and set the intonation on a Floyd Rose. Great man .
He loved Rush and I Shared 311 with him. I gave him Grassroots on March Eleventh. Eric you a great dude.

There's comments here saying, "why doesn't he show off his rudimental chops...." etc....Something to remember, he's done all that, everyone knows he has them. NOT pulling out EVERYTHING you have for EVERY solo is showcase of skill and musical maturity. Just because you can, doesn't mean you always should. Frankly, so many solos out there are that, so if you want that, go search that. Also it takes a lot of confidence to a level of simplicity during a solo, and it's nice to see. Dynamics, composition, variety, melodics, band involvement (which they're great at) and fun....never forget fun....Chad is great. bottom line.

Here he's trying to be melodic for sure and just doesn't seem to showcase the rudimental styles. Sometimes when you're solo'ing it's tough to touch on all the material you want to... very tough.
