  • Aslan & I continue along the South Oxford, towards the first of several locks on our way to an overnight mooring near the tiny village of Somerton.
We soon arrive at Aynho Weir Lock, which for a short distance drops us onto a length of the Oxford Canal which becomes the River Cherwell.
Along the way I receive an invitation to a full English Breakfast and later a canalside birthday BBQ. Unfortunately my strict schedule along this barren 21 mile stretch of the Oxford Canal prevents me from accepting these kind and generous offers. Ah well, maybe next time . . .

Kevin, thank you for your videos, always a great pleasure to view them. Your perspectives on life, so interesting.
This is Colin and Heather from Ohio
Back in October 2021, we were coming to join you lucky folks on the cut. Well we landed in September this year. And commented on one of your videos.
Your reply ,to the comment we made is below
    .......Msg start, CountryHouseGent
Thanks indeed Colin. Pleased you enjoyed watching. If it was me, doing it all again and knowing what I know now, I'd go for a boat with a nicely sorted Gardner twin or three cylinder. Whichever though, enjoy every minute. 🙂 msg end......
Well although somewhat late, I have secured a lovely boat, with guess what a Gardner 3LW, it was the first boat we saw, we then looked at plenty of others, but we bought Iris No 2. Now have the pleasure of a lovely Gardner
Heather is still in ohio and will be joining me in April, she doesn't want to do the winter in UK. Anyway, thank you for your advice, what an engine........ that said if my memory serves me well, Aslan's Petter Mclaren is a wonderful sound and it's been serving you very well
Hope to see you about on the cut. Keep up the videos. Best Regards Colin

Thanks again, CHG! What a shame, looked like a lovely party, with a good group of people. But at age 66, I fully understand your position. When you get tired, you get tired and that's all she wrote. No point pushing yourself of an evening, only to be miserable the next day. Very nice stretch of canal. Nothing really remarkeable or memorable, but pleasant enough for sure. Enjoyed your commentary, as always. Until next time, Cheers and godspeed!

Currently watching Season 1 episode 3 on Prime and spotted a cracking little NB called ‘Iets Groter’ moored at the Braunston locks that has recently been sold from Rugby boats. It sold really quickly as was such a good buy. Was lovely to see it looking so pristine and well cared for in your vid.

Love the camera angles you choose to set up Kevin. They really show what it's like to be a "lone" narrowboater... I mean... the actual mechanics of it. It does beg the question, have you ever had one of your cameras fall/get knocked off into the water? Inquiring minds want to know. ;) Thanks for sharing your travels. I really enjoy them.

I've driven by Aynho Wharf soo many times - a classic east-west cross country route. Nice to finally see it from a narrowboat perspective. The Cherwell floods there spectacularly, on occasion, and the road becomes a causeway.
is there a Naismith Rule equivalent for Canals, I wonder ? 🤔

People helping people out. What a novel yet archaic idea. I've been trying to find help for months, but here in the States, if you don't have and are lacking in key essentials, the ones that do have will make sure you never will....but will pump themselves up some kind of tried starting a metal fabrication shop frenzy saying they care when they don't. Apologies to all you great folks out there....having an extremely crappy month and end of year. I tried, am trying to start a metal fabrication shop. It's harder than I thought and I can't find any help anywhere. Bad credit...you're doomed. I was an alcoholic up until 12 years ago but that past is hanging on for dear life ... everyone remembers that guy. Again apologies for the ranting vent, I have ZERO family/support group and most of the time my only way to vent is in the comments of vlogs hoping someone might give shit. I want to be on those canals so bad I taste it every night. Yet, just a dream.

The dest plan for living aboard is “don’t make plans”. Take life as it comes, chill out. You only need a few feet of ARMCO to chain up on. The other end use two pins in a “V” formation to moor securely. This method served me well for 20 years solo cruising.

Think this is one of your best. Maybe I’m biased as Aynho is one of my favourite places. My job in the early ‘80s required me to travel through the village many times. I can’t think of a more quintessentially medieval rural hamlet. Great job on the sound edit, that huge creaking lock gate was marvellous and the windlass hitting the deck added le verite. Thank you.

Another great vlog! That landing at Aynho is a bit scary as a solo boater! 😬
When the party people invited you, you said something about permits - do they have a leisure mooring for that spot?! Also, the Armco when you said it was private land… with the risk of sounding like a thicky, how would I know it’s private land? No towpath?! Thank you & apologies for sooo many questions 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m learning before they let me out on the water alone! 😊

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  9 месяцев назад +1

From a distance I thought they were permit moorings but going past, turns out it was visitor moorings. Anything not on the towpath side ( 'off towpath' ) is generally private land. Have a great time when you get on the water. Top tip, go slower than you think is slow and you'll be fine. 🙂

All the people on the canals are a lot like the people who live in rural Kansas. We still wave at everyone and they wave back unless they are "City People". The Kansas farmers and ranchers around here are salt of the Earth good people. The lock gates look heavy and it takes some effort to open and close them so 7 miles and how many locks? I'd need a cup of tea too

Hellay again from just across the pond in North Carolina. Kevin, you set your camera on moving lock gates - opening and closing them to get great action shots, but have you ever had a close call with camera-to-water proximities? Also wish you had a closing guitar bit at the end of your videos. Something along the lines of Different Strings maybe? Cheers, Alan

So far I've had one incident where the camera nearly went in the drink, due to a very strong side wind. Caught on camera near the start here ruclips.net/video/uOpGXPjtVro/видео.html

Good detail on this episode. Do you plan on doing any more cooking classes?

Good morning, Kevin! I love your videos! I'm just curious - when you can't find a mooring, could you use an anchor at both ends of Aslan and just moor wherever?

No that would cause severe damage to the canal bed

    Good morning Kevin!
From beautiful sunny Napa Valley California. My bacon’s frying and my tea is at hand!
    And you’re on my tele/youtube.
A curious question I have; of the total mileage of your canals, what percentage would be accessible to wide beam boats??
    Cheers 🍻

Yet another great watch for a Friday evening, the current Mrs would like to know if you will be filming anymore of your shopping trips, she is worried that your not getting enough pork pies these days, and as only a woman could ask how do you do your clothes washing ?. Take care and stay safe.

Do all the canals have paths beside them? Some look so overgrown that I can’t see anywhere to walk?

Is it my imagination or does Aslan's engine have a slightly different note? I am enjoying traveling on that canal.
