The Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) needs little introduction. As well as 60 years of performing and 200+ recordings, he somehow found the time in the 1960s to write a book of 'Jazz exercises, minuets, etudes & pieces for piano' which provide a sort of bridge between classical teaching material and jazz styles. The book is with 13 Jazz Exercises. Here i play No. 3.

I almost burst into tears. I left my beloved piano teacher few years ago because I didn't have enough time for music school anymore. This was one of the first jazz pieces he ever gave me. I accidentally found the sheets today, but couldn't remember how it was supposed to sound, so I played your video. I was definitely playing it slower, but memories still came flooding back.
I wasn't a good student, often unprepared, barely passing my exams. But he never judged me for that and we had a lot of good time together, finding new jazz pieces and experimenting with other instruments.
I really should pay him a visit, even though I know I'd be ashamed for not contacting him all this time.
Thank you so much for this video!!
I'm also watching from Poland :)
Glad you enjoyed it! :) It is always great when you have a good connection with your teacher :) You should definitely pay him a visit :) Best wishes from Bulgaria!
Same exact situation for me ❤️
I practiced for 8 hours on this tune ... I'm at the part where the left hand is gonna do the lick ... I'm starting to have anxiety lol but I know I'll make it through !! Cant wait to master the piece , thanks for showing the birdside view you killed it !
Glad it is helpful :)
I am also woking on this piece right now! hopefully you're much close to mastering it now
@@victoriaogden8322 i did and posted it , now im on to another oscar peterson excercise ! hope you made it through as well!
Ha, ha, ha! Nice to hear you again! I play this one. I attended York University, Toronto, when Oscar was teaching there-he later became chancellor of the University. I never met him.
I absolutely enjoy learning these. These exercices really help you building a musical vocabulary on the piano.
Lovely chords. You must enjoy playing His music, and it floated through my speaker like magic. Very enjoyable. Nita. X
Thanks Nita! :) Yeah awesome little tune :))
This is such a great little piece of music and you really do it justice. Bravo! Your version of #2 is also incredible.
Thanks man! :))
another proof than sometimes just a simple piano (or whatever instrument) exercise can become a legend. just like bach's prelude in c ....
Excellent, nicely interpreted. I am going to try it, probably in a much slower way!!
Thank you so much for making this video! I know it takes a lot of effort to produce something like that. Thanks for sharing this piece, I play the piano but honestly these last years I didn´t take the time to study new pieces and practice technique, so this video encouraged me to practice and study again, thanks!
Thank you as well! And I am very happy that you felt inspired by my playing and that you are coming back to the piano! That's one of the best things in life in my opinion 🙂
Thank you Stanisłav. You play beautifully. Greetings from Poland.
Thank you very much! Best wishes from Bulgaria! :)
Обалдеть. Я играл это в музыкальной школе 25 лет назад. И до сих помню 😄

on reflection to a previous comment the semiquaver runs start after a semi-quaver rest, rather than a quaver rest which is what is written.
what is song name?
Классно, только шестнадцатые совсем вне счета.
Nice, but don't rush the 16ths.
The semiquaver runs are too rushed - all three of them fit in under 4 beats so pre-empting the first beat of the next bar
