Mr. Lee, it is a pleasure to see your work. Please continue to post this sort of thing on RUclips. A whole set of Jim Lee instructional videos would be awesome.
why am i just finding this know jim u have been the reason i still draw my own comic as a hobby u are the best in the biz an my inspiration from since i was a kid thank u
One ttrick which might help...but I haven't tried...resist drawing the eyes first. The temptation is very great...but I think the trick is drawing the EYEBROWS first. The eyebrows will allow you to draw the eyes better. This is my theory. Normally Iv'e drawn the eyes but for some reason the faces never match the references for me. I think drawing eyebrows before the eyes could be the ticket.
DorothyFan1 I have found the complete opposite - I find concentrating on the face shape and proportions first ignoring the eyebrows until I put them in last has improved my ability to get a good likeness
I appreciate that he states the obvious here about inking. A lot of times when comic art looks bad - to me - it's actually because the inking turned an otherwise great piece into something harsh to look at. I love seeing the original pencil sketch over the finished inked and coloured piece.
@EarthBonesArt Haha! So true, that kinda escaped me at the time. I hadn't read any Wildstorm stuff at that point, and I was confused about the differences between an imprint and a publishing company.
That pen is a Pigma Micron. They come in a variety of different sizes. Copic Multiliner is a very similar pen that gives great results and is refillable. Copic also produces a wide variety of markers that perform wonderfully (Adam Hughes uses this brand a lot as well). And remember, while your pen does play its part in the grand scheme of things, only you can make it do great things! Happy drawing and hope that helped you.
Remember, the same is true of Digital: You gotta bring your own stuff to whatever pen variant you're using. Just like the Croquil (Hunt 102) looks VERY different according to who's inking with it.
Any comment on the longevity of Micron markers? I know that Gil Kane's "inks", done with a Flair writing marker, have almost faded to nothing. Of course, it's a completely different type of ink, but I wonder if anyone can speak to this?
Stan Lee's brother actually draws the Spider-Man newspaper strip. His name escapes me at the moment, but Stan might write that as well. At least I think it was his brother, they have the same last name. But short of a promotional stunt, Stan Lee has never been credited as an artist on any Marvel comic, since he was exclusively a writer and editor at the time.
Wait, what comment are you responding to? Most comic artists work much larger than the actual published page; most stuff gets reduced, so how big his drawing is has nothing to do with the size of the comic. As for pens, I could be wrong, but the one Mr. Lee is using is felt-tipped, not ball-point. But some comic artists will use ball-points.
Actually they do draw the pages that big typically a panels are drawn as single pages and then scanned and put together the way they're meant to be to be mass printed.
@panaceaartist I'm guessing you meant 0.5, but that looks like a 0.1. Judging from the other outlines and shading it looks like he's changed grades a few times, though. Looks like a 0.5 in the background and on the shirt of the bigger face, and anything in-between down to the one he's using. :)
Pompalompalus, Stan Lee is infact a comic writer AND artist. He actually draws the Spider-Man comic strip in the newspapers. Jim Lee used to be my favorite comic artists as a teenager. I think its cool that he's gotten back into drawing comics after his long hiatus of being a millionaire playboy. :-P But I've moved on from the Super-hero genera.
okay, at risk of sounding like I know things that no person should really have the time to learn... you're kidding right? this is a vid by Jim lee, one of the most recognizable artists in mainstream American comics today. He could pretty much START his own company, much less get INTO one. Actually, I think you're kidding. But on the Internet, I can never tell, really. I mean, it's all typing. And Stan Lee was a writer and editor, not an artist. But I still think you're just kidding... ??
@pompalompalus I know this comment is three years old, but it was so stupid i had to comment on it . you know jim lee as a writer and not an artist ? what the hell ? are you from crypton ?
problem with Jim Lee's art, and the reason why he never won an Eisner type award, is coz his male and female character faces all look similar. His stuff is eye candy, but his characters all look a like. His earlier works on uncanny x-men were his best art. He's been more undisciplined when he left Marvel.
I think Jim "leveled up" when he merged with DC. IMO... And Jack Kirby drew only a handful of face/head types his whole 5 decade career; I think he turned out okay! _lol_
Actually, now I'm pretty much convinced you're just kidding. And now I feel really stupid. Well...that's okay. Feeling stupid is just an honest way of being human sometimes. Umm...yeah. Have a nice day...?
What a beauty 🤩🤩 best sketch ever . ❤❤❤
Amazing work. You have always been an inspiration. You da man! :)

he puts a lot of thoughts and heart into his art, he does not half-ass it. He deserves to be a great artist.
why am i just finding this know jim u have been the reason i still draw my own comic as a hobby u are the best in the biz an my inspiration from since i was a kid thank u
it's so nice to watch him work
What you share is much appreciated!
One word describes perfectly this piece: BADASS.

This is some real good stuff Jim.
Great to see more videos from you, for awhile I thought this account was dead.
Y'all are so old holy crap

nice work =) you should take your talent to a new level :P. thanx for teaching me more about art
@Crastics07 It's ink and brushes mostly as well as special pens to create the look.
You've never heard of Jim Lee? Hell, you must live under a rock! You can see his design influences in the old Fox Network X-Men series.
Amazing piece of work by Jim lee, he is god's own artist

Sad to hear that. Gil is the artist that got me into Spiderman, I wasn't a Ditko fan.

You rock ! Thanks for the help jim. So inspirational ! Keep doin what you do.
BTW: DO you ink over your original pencil art ?
Actually they do draw the pages that big
typically a panels are drawn as single pages and then scanned and put together the way they're meant to be to be mass printed.
It's called a micron pen, probably a really small size, like a .05mm.
Jim lee is a savage he is the best love his work

bring heroes back!
@RPGoddess u make a valid point
@jugg2000 How can you, along with 28 other people have read Chris Claremont's X-Men and not consider John Byrne's work X-men?
Lee's a prodigy
.05 is ridiculously small. What do you ink with? Rabbits hair?
So then, the 'pencil is mightier than the pen'?
@richmond436
Use whiteout? Or maybe scan it and photoshop the mistake away. Or maybe just ink it in photoshop - things get easier these days.
any one see what kinda pen he's using? looks like a .05 micron...if so thats kinda big and clunky for details imho.
What size ink pens were used for this illustration?
You da man Jim, you da man.
@Rowlannnn21 Do he have a face book page? jimlee?
And by some, I think I'm only thinking of Craig Thompson.
REAL LIFE CARTOON!!??
