EXTREME SOLAR ECLIPSE intercept by CIRRUS AIRPLANE from 19,000 feet with Oxygen!

  • Check out this total solar #eclipse intercept by Cirrus airplane with expert pilot with oxygen at 19,000 feet AGL! The entire 360 degree sunset was visible over a carpet of cloud cover. Ground and aerial coverage from veteran storm chasers Reed Timmer and Edgar O'neal with a #tornado watch issued during the eclipse flight. This is the first of three storm chasing days in a row in Texas through the Mid-South. The eclipse seemed to disrupt the instability for the severe weather event today in Texas, with instant cloud cover excited in the path of totality as the temperature fell to the dew point. Never stop chasing!

Saw this one in person in Texas right in the center. Unless you see this in person there are no words to describe what it is like. What I saw today was the most beautiful & incredible thing I have EVER witnessed. If you haven't seen one of these total solar eclipses, you need to do it in your lifetime. It had a profound impact on me, & I can't quite explain how. Reed, I'm so glad you got to witness this!! I actually ended up in Austin TX chasing! 😊

I had a conversation with chatGPT about the rarity and improbability of human beings getting to witness something like a total solar eclipse, but to keep the post as short as possible, here is the pseudo scientific gist of the convo along with a bit of an artistic summary.... both of which are quite enlightening...I think anyway:
Let's denote the overall rarity (R) of witnessing a total solar eclipse as we do on Earth by considering the following factors:
A: The alignment and size-distance ratio of the Sun, Moon, and Earth.
B: The presence of an atmosphere that allows visibility of eclipses.
C: The emergence of intelligent life capable of appreciating the phenomenon.
D: The temporal window during which these conditions align.
Each factor can be thought of as a dimensionless probability (ranging from 0 to 1), where closer to 0 means highly improbable and closer to 1 means highly probable. The overall rarity can then be conceptualized as the product of these factors, assuming they are independent (which they may not be, but for the sake of this artistic demonstration, we'll simplify):
    Formula: R=A×B×C×D
    Describing Each Factor
A (Alignment and Size-Distance Ratio): This factor accounts for the precise physical configuration that allows the Moon to perfectly cover the Sun from Earth's perspective. Given the diversity of planetary systems, this precise configuration is rare.
B (Atmospheric Visibility): This represents the probability of a planet having an atmosphere that is just right for observing solar eclipses from the surface-neither too opaque nor too transparent in the wrong wavelengths.
C (Intelligent Life): This factor is perhaps the most speculative, representing the chance of intelligent observers evolving to appreciate and understand the significance of what they are witnessing.
D (Temporal Window): This accounts for the fact that the conditions for total solar eclipses as seen from Earth will not last forever. The Moon is slowly receding from Earth, and the window during which total solar eclipses can occur is finite on a cosmic timescale.
    Interpretation
The product of these factors, R, gives us a conceptual measure of the rarity of experiencing total solar eclipses as we do on Earth. Since each factor is less than 1, their product is even smaller, emphasizing the compounded rarity of the situation.
But what does it all mean really?
    ==========================
To give this formula an artistic touch, imagine each factor (A, B, C, D) not just as a probability, but as a testament to the delicate balance and beauty of the universe. Each represents a thread in the tapestry of cosmic conditions that allows us to witness such a majestic event. The formula, R, is not just a mathematical expression but a poetic reflection on the serendipity of our existence and the awe-inspiring phenomena it allows us to experience.
This formula serves as a reminder of the extraordinary set of circumstances that align to make such experiences possible, inviting us to reflect on our place in the universe and the rare beauty it holds.
