In elementary school I was greatly discouraged by my art teacher. Didn't draw or paint for the next 40 years. I always loved colors and how they make me feel. At age 50ish I slowly started art adventure. Tried so many different styles in the last 15 years, slowly got better it. And I recently discovered urban sketching and I knew this is what really speaks to me. Colors and lines. I still working on to loose my fear of drawing. Sometimes I think where I would be now if my first teacher had been more supporting. At age mid sixties I want to fill my soul with the joy of colors and drawing. Painting sketching just for my own joy.
Bottom line: find your joy in doing art and do it just for that. Make that your PURPOSE for doing art. Then, share your joy to increase it. I am not a great artist but I LOVE DOING IT, so that is what I do. I made an art studio for myself above my garage and I LOVED DOING THAT, TOO. Up there I drum, sketch, paint, write, and dance around to music because THAT IS JOY to me. I know my art will improve over time, but that is not my concern. My sole concern is JOY. I encourage everyone to make JOY your priority.
Just starting my journey into sketching at the young age of 64! I love Ian’s positivity and am looking forward to getting stuck into some interesting and challenging subjects.
I can well empathise with Ian about early encouragement. I got a lot of that in my last two years of primary school from a fabulous teacher which set the foundation. In secondary school, I floundered at art as all we had were poster paints which I absolutely hated! I picked up again when I was about 20 with pen and ink on tiny drawings and it developed from there. In my thirties I did a lot of pen and ink and line and wash and managed to sell quite a lot of studies of Stamford in Lincs. Since then, my 'art career' has been sporadic and I in late retirement, I now find myself back with the pencil, pen and watercolours, doing a series of pen and wash of Burton pubs that have since closed but are not forgotten as well as other studies. Every good wish from Paul in the Midlands
Hi Ian, you are an absolute inspiration & so motivational. Love your designs. I'm new to urban sketching, but have always admired this artwork. Have just joined a local Facebook group. Thankyou Grace
I love Ian’s art! It’s happy, colorful, whimsical, and they make me smile 😊. Ania you we’re such a good host. What a great interview you did here with Ian.
What a wonderful experience this was! Really loved Ian's positivity. Everything he said was so relevant to how I feel and it's so inspiring. Ãnia was such a sweet host and that made the interview all the more better.
This is a great conversation. Mr. Fennelly is a great artist and engaging personality. The way I look at art, especially on the internet, is you put it out there and people engage with it and comment. Whether the comments are positive or negative does not matter. As soon as there is conversation about it, the art has done its work. Even when the comments are meant to be hurtful and insulting, they do not effect the art or the artist, because they are above the fray.
I love all the positivity and words Ian said, thank you Ania for this interview ! Ian totally changed the game for me, thanks to him I have been able to unchain my creativity :)
Thank you both, that was GREAT. Love Ian’s sketchbooks.Especially the use of his vibrant watercolors mixed with black ink. Both of you have a Happy and very prosperous New Year. Keep up the great work.
I only found Etchr Studio's a couple of months ago, but am really enjoying your pod casts, and guests. Ania I can see and hear your enthusiasm for art, you're a great host. I've gotten into pen and watercolor wash recently, as watercolor was what I started out in. I also paint in soft pastels. I'm definitely going to look into Ian's workshops. I just love the color and boldness in your artwork. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. :)
Love this! Thank you so much for sharing this Deborah 🥰 and we hope to see you in our future classes as well! We have free live classes on RUclips every week so make sure to turn on your reminders for those 🧡
As in the words of Yoda " there is only do, not try". So if want to do it, start simple and by cheap from the Pound Shop, one sketchbook , some paints, paint brushes and pencils. Total cost £4.00. Think small and simple, like apples and pebbles from the beach. Tiny things are easier to draw, as they do not overwhelm you with complex shapes.
I just bet the woman who wrote an epistle about Ian's work criticizes a lot of other things in her life. Some people just love to nitpick and complain. I LOVE Ian's work. His classes are very useful, provided one wants to learn. Thank you.
I loved this interview!!! But... your backgrounds drive me nuts. 😆 Well, not so much the backgrounds, but you guys sort of superimposing yourself on to it.
