  • Quick removal and reinstallation of Hermes 3000 typewriter carriage.
    A few notes:
    1) You CAN leave the drawstring attached, and then once the carriage is off, engage the carriage lock to hold the lower plate centered. Totally your preference.
    2) Don't forget, one of the anchor brackets is reverse threaded; seen lots of those screws stripped from folks going wayyy too hard in the wrong direction.
    3) When reinstalling, you can also tighten the brackets just a bit snug to hold them sideways; makes things more manageable if you aren't used to a lot of wiggly parts all at once.

Thank you! Removed my carriage to clean and couldn’t get it back on. Your video saved me!

Very good tips! I especially like the paper clip extension! I’ve done about 6 H3K’s lately, and it’s amazing how quickly you can get comfortable with this carriage removal. So daunting at first, though!
I find using a spring hook and a locking set of forceps really helps with the drawband.
Awesome video- thanks for sharing it!

I appreciate seeing this, and while I'm sure my H3K would probably benefit from a carriage removal for cleaning, there is NO WAY I'm going to attempt this. My machine came into my possession fairly clean, and I've done what I can in cleaning with minor disassembly, but there's no lifeboat if I mess anything up. Banging around on a crippled low-end Smith-Corona to learn mechanics is one thing, this is another.

Luckily these were designed to be easily removed, whereas several other portable models were not. However, I do believe that if it doesn't need it...there's no sense in straining the bones of these old machines more than necessary.

I usually just leave the drawband attached. I didn’t even know there was a special hook for it!

You definitely can leave it as is! It's just easier for me to reattach to the "holder" hook below (for when it comes time to reinstall.)

My tabs don’t work after carriage on / off. I can see they set and release, but they don’t catch.
