Now you know how long they had the harmonies down pat. Born to it. This is Brisbane, Australia 1963. Remember seeing this on Brisbane television when I was 9/10. Love their version of Lonnie Doneghan's My Old Man's a Dustman. Lonnie was a brilliant English skittle singer who Tom Jones mentioned he sang with on Britain's Got Talent recently when they auditioned Lonnie's son. We were lucky in Australia to have great music on the radio and television from the UK, USA, NZ and local talent like the Bee Gees.

I believe the first time they sang in public was when some theater was having a lip-synch contest. They were going to lip-synch to “lollipop.” One of the twins was carrying the record and dropped it, so they got there with no record and instead they just sang it a cappella. That’s why they would sometimes sing it as adults.

      @kathleendewey5347 9 месяцев назад

@MariaRuggiero-lp2cn He was actually supposed to be the straight kind of grumpy guy to Robin's funny guy. Part of their act was to have the little twins be like Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, or Laurel&Hardy or the Smothers Brothers as a comic musical act. Barry has also talked about Maurice having a trick tie that would start rolling up from the bottom during a performance and the audience (always an adult audience back then) would get the biggest kick out of it and Mo would just keep a straight face. They were so clever and talented even as children.

Just seeing this now - it’s so funny because they didn’t just act the wack on stage, they were little “criminals” off. They talk about it openly.. They loved setting fires, particularly where there were billboards.. they used to build a small fire and put bricks around it. One day they remembered to go to the swimming pool and rushed home to get their towels etc. On the way back they saw a crowd of people and the fire brigade trying to put out the fire. The billboards burned to the ground. “Aw no,” they said, “ We forgot to put the fire out” !!! Hahaha. Barry got 2yrs probation for stealing a kids car from someone’s drive. That someone was a police officer. Oh oh!! This all happened in Manchester. The Manchester police turned up at the Gibbs door after a while and suggested Mr & Mrs Gibb took the boys away before they ended up in reform school. That’s how the Gibbs ended up in Australia. They were so into music back then and wanted to be famous. Barry said to the twins one day while standing on a bridge: Listen, we can start being good and concentrate on getting famous. The boys agreed so Barry took the penknife he’d stole from Woolworths out of his pocket and threw it in the river. They never stole a thing since. A little aside to this: Maurice was a goody two shoes and terrified to do anything wrong - one day Barry and Robin egged him on to steal a bottle of orange juice from a woman’s doorstep. He did and in Maurices words: It was the first thing I ever stole and got nicked”. Poor Maurice!!! Haha hilarious when you see them now in old interviews recalling those days.

And she cut out the B&G and sewed them to their waist coats.
She was a lovely homely lady who lived to 96. Died in 2016.
The heartbreaking downside of living so long was she buried her 3 sons and husband. It was just her and Barry after Robin died. Barry did have an older sister Lesley who still lives in Australia.
There are rumours that the brothers had a younger sister called Bree. In fact she was lesleys daughter and Mr & Mrs Gibb brought her up. So the brothers were actually her uncles.
Sadly she passed away this year
Heart attack I think. Another sad loss for Barry and his sister Lesley...They definitely have a brilliant back story......

THANK You for reacting to this clip! Back then, Robin was the major clown during performances, while Maurice was the serious one (for the most part...).
As time went on, Maurice turned into the joker during their stage appearances - having fun in front of the cameras (and the audience...) at his brother's expense...
However, all three brothers (and Andy, too...) showed a sense of humor that could've easily made them all famous as professional stand up comedians.
(Check out interviews done with Phil Donahue [and others...] that are available on RUclips...)
These three weren't only Musical Geniuses, creating one musical Masterpiece after another - they had fun (at times roaring with laughter...) while doing it, too...

There’s not another group like the Bee Gees!! These songs were not written by Barry, but if you react to BEE GEES 1960 you can see the earliest tv footage available (ages 13 and 10) singing one of Barry’s. They were the sole supporters of the family of 7 beginning at 12 and 9 years old. I believe they were all out of school by 1963 when this medley was filmed. They worked 7+ years in Australia barely getting by, then were millionaires within months of arriving in London. They never lost their connection to their childhood... even performed Alexander’s Ragtime Band on the Midnight Special in the early 70’s. Robin once said the show business is something you’re either born with, or you’re not. They obviously were!! Their acting abilities allow them to deliver songs with the appropriate emotion. They’re the total package.
Barry’s ability to sing in falsetto was discovered when recording Nights On Broadway in 1974 or 75, but you have to listen to the studio version to hear it.
Besides BEE GEES 1960, you may want to add BEE GEES DON’T SAY GOODBYE to your list:))

Yes, Maurice did a few high licks on the Midnight Special performance, but definitely not on the studio recording. It’s well documented as being the song they were recording when Barry’s falsetto was discovered. It’s documented in interviews, books, and is easily available on Wikipedia. There is also a big difference in Maurice’s live ad libs and the recording.

The Bee Gees Song Nights on Broadway was when they discovered it. The Producer asked if they could scream or sound excited. Barry said he thought they could do it. They just started Harmonizing Higher and Higher. They discovered they all had the Falsettos but Barry could do it longer. It could have been when Barry said he thought he could do it that he may have remembered playing around with sounds. Barry Gibb in an interview in December said the Bee Gees just played around making different sounds and trying to match it.
Their song fanny Be Tender With My Love was one of their first songs using the Falsetto more.

At this stage they'd been performing together for years and supporting the family. They were sharing dressing rooms with strippers! Their father would have to chaperone them in rough Aussie pubs and RSL clubs. Barry was imitating a woman's voice there and didn't develop the falsetto until Night's on Broadway when the producer wanted a scream in the song. I know.

Chad, you might not think that you were prepared for this reaction but you couldn't have done better! Your face was just priceless during the entire medley. Yes, our precious young lads were just amazing at this age and, if you go back to their 1960 performance, they were indeed incredible then, too. Your reaction was truly one-of-a-kind and I enjoyed it immensely! No need to feel like you were unprepared. I can't wait for you to do more Bee Gees reactions. When I see your notification show up I immediately stop and listen and have never been disappointed. I know you have a list of our requests ("I Can't See Nobody" -1974 Melbourne concert - is mine) but, if no one has suggested that you react to their 1965 performance of "Wine and Women", please do. They are 2 years older and you won't recognize the twins! They grew up! Their voices changed and Robin shares the lead with big brother Barry. I promise that you won't be disappointed.

Chad, they actually sang "Alexander's Ragtime Band" at their 1974 Melbourne concert. This is the same concert that I asked you to use for your "I Can't See Nobody" reaction. Check it out just for fun. The twins are still putting on a great show 11 years later. And, in regards to Barry's falsetto, he truly discovered that he could sing in his falsetto voice in 1975 for "Nights on Broadway" from the "Main Course" album, so I think that he was just having fun with his voice.

“I can’t see nobody” is one of my fav Robin jams. Each verse becomes more electric. People act like the Gees never heard of black peoples music til disco, but they were a soul band from the start. Raised on the Mills Brothers. I saw an Andy interview on YT ‘Jhow Rock Show’ recently that showed Barry and Andy jamming with the legendary and by then elderly DONALD MILLS!

Totally agree with you about Robin's great "I Can't See Nobody" performances. My all-time favorite performance is the 1973 "Midnight Special" performance where his emotions just poured right out of him. The reason why I don't suggest this performance for a reaction is because of those nasty credits that show up at the end. And, yes, all of the brothers admired the Mills Brothers, but especially Robin I think.

@@lauriebarnes2999 - I agree 100% with both of your requests, "Wine , Women and Song" and my possible all time favorite of Robin's (as if I could pick just one) "I Can't see nobody"! His version on Midnight Special was the best, bar none.

Suzie Q, I think that "I Can't See Nobody" is definitely your favorite Robin song as well as mine, but, you're right when you say that it's so hard to pick just one. There are just too many to choose from and that's all there is to it! I've loved every song he's ever sung. He was just an amazing man who is so very much loved and missed by all his fans. ❤ 😥 ❤

This was just the start of good things to come for the Bee Gees. They sang for change at the race track. Barry said at that early age that they would become famous one day. This gives people a better respect for the Bee Gees and everything they have gone through to reach success. He didn't discover the falsetto until later in life Happy 2023!!! Flabbergasted is the word to use for your reaction.

I’m glad you finished your reaction with a mention of “Words.” From the early to the late 60s we watched The Bee Gees go from their first forays in songwriting to the full flower of song. BTW, you HAVE TO react to “Lovers” immediately.🚨🚨🚨 Robin’s vocal breaks on that song are plastic, elastic and spastic. And Barry sounds like a cross between Stevie Wonder and Boz Skaggs. And Mo, of course, makes the chorus beautiful. This is an emergency!

I can only repeat. A direct comparison is impossible. It was another century and conditions for making music. But for me these „kids“ were the Mozarts of Pop Musik. Family background similar. Father Mozart was a musican. His son Wolfgang played Piano on stage as a child of 5 and wrote later his first compositions at the age of 10, The father Gibb of the three brothers was a leader of a little orchestra and his kids were on stage at the age of 6 to 10 and wrote first songs, Barry, with 14. Mozart died unfortunately very young by health problems, sadly Maurice with 51 too.
The funny thing on this early video ist the height difference of the brother, Barry only 3 years older seems to be the double in height to Robin and Maurice.

I won't say you have to play and watch anything but my suggestion to bridge the gap of these early 60s of the Bee Gees to the time when the twins were young teenagers. The song is called 'Wine Women and Song'. You will be stunned by the change in voices as Robin and Maurice's voices have broken and you can see their careers were mapped out in front of them just ready for them to grasp. I think you will see why I am suggesting this. Maurice has learned to play guitar by this time. Big thank you if you manage to add this to your already long list.

Apart from the amazing voices, that we all know about, it's the professionalism, timing, harmonies and performance value that is amazing at this very young age. They had natural talent but must have practiced so hard to be as slick as this. They are so much more confident and mature (obviously) than in the 1960 clip.

The style of music around the late 50's in Britain and Oz was derived from skiffle which was a mix of folk, vaudeville, dancehall, country, you name it. The most famous proponent was a Brit, Lonnie Donnegan who took all kinds of music and adapted it to a sort of rockabilly style that was copied by the early Beatles, Bee Gees, even arguably the Everly's and Buddy Holly, and a lot of groups of the day. If you ever heard Lonnie Donnegan, he sang all kinds of stuff and updated it to new styles that caught on with a lot of groups. These songs were performed by Donnegan.

Yes, and that's something that makes me angry about their father. Hugh became their manager, but it appeared the main thing was enjoying the wealth that his sons brought in. They were indeed poor growing up, and actually supporting the entire family. Barry said that his father wasn't one or paying the rent, and they'd often have to sneak away in the night to evade the landlord. Also, Maurice vowed that he would tell his children every day that he loved them, because his own father never said it to him.
