I live off grid along with several nieghbors we have all tried this model here are is what we found
    1) to noisy
    2) do not attach them to your house. In high winds it will sound and feel like a plane landing in your house
    3) yes they do work for about 5 to 8 years there are five of use that tried them
    4) none of us would use them again better to just expand your solar and use small 1000 watt generator it is cheaper in the long run.
    5) they just overall are not a good investment for RVS
    6) I did try using one on extended RV trip will not do that again
7 ) even at todays cost I wouldn't invest in one

I bought that same wind generator in a kit with a 100w solar panel, thinking I could mount it on my van. Once I got it and saw the weight and hight it would require I realized it would not be a practical thing for my van build. This was a very valuable video for others, sadly too late for me lol

I have solar and wind, solar winds hands down unless you are in a wind value 4 or 5 in the U.S. the government has this info available for you. The wind generator I built is 6000 watts on a 75 foot tower, Ive seen the wind surge and push it past 150 amps until the tail furled ( which you need) it out of the wind to prevent it burning itself up The blades are 14 inches wide at the bottom and 8.5 feet long for a swept area of 17 feet, all hand built while attempting to make the best possible TSR value. This 17 foot swept area only omits the sound of a 10 speed bicycle going down the road....high blade noise is usually bad blade pitch, blade vibration ( cheap blades) or blades out of balance or possibly a very crappy cut-in value ...cut in value is where the blade rotation begins making useable power for conversion or battery storage...thats when the blade hits the resistance , after which, the faster they turn the more power and resistance they make which forces the blades to work harder and possibly induce the noise you are hearing at cutin speed and beyond, so well made blades reduce the cutin noise and beyond to minimum levels
Still my solar beats my very large wind-gen hands down
On the wind generator, you dont necessarily need a charge controller, but you do need a way to burn off the extra power it makes to keep from boiling your batteries from over charging. This can be accomplished by using larger ceramic resistors to convert it to heat ( like a heater element) and simply burn off the surplus power as heat....heck you could use a water heater element as that resistor and let it possibly make some hot water at times for you.
However, you still need to keep a load on the wind generator, because if it is allowed to "free spool" in which the blades dont have any resistance at all it could tear itself apart in high winds, You either slow the blades with some resistance such as batteries or resistors, or you simply short the two leads together and the blades will slow to a crawl or completely stop spinning because of far too much resistance.
As the turbine turns without resistance its making" Wild Power" and have seen three phase AC power over 408 volts when I removed the resistance to the blades briefly for a few seconds ( and those blades spooled up fast!) and the voltage goes up and down with the generators RPM's...wind generators become manageable with resistance and pushing that AC "wild Power" through a rectifier to convert it to DC ( battery) power.
Your cable sizes also have a lot to do with cut-in values and that resistance that you either harness or unleash.
Your losses from going from the initial AC power-through a rectifier ( to convert to usable DC power; battery storage) and back through an inverter for regular 120v AC power, will of course have losses at each step of the way of conversion, so at the end of the day your efficiency on a wind generator is probably around 70% or less on a good day.
Solar still beats the dog snot out wind generation

Thank you. I've been wondering about using a wind generator. I thought it was a simple as having a bunch of small ones (little pinwheel size) so that you have "wind" when you're driving haha. I'm surprised to hear that wind is more expensive than solar.

I had one of those "400 watt" turbines and they suck here in the Arizona desert. I only had 3 days on average per month where it would charge the battery for a couple hours. Also if the winds get too high you would have to manually put on the brakes or it could burn up. Not worth it. Would rather have a 50-100 watt solar panel and forget it (just set it and forget it).

  • @truckcampinglifemag
    @truckcampinglifemag 5 лет назад +2

The link you are showing has a solar panel also. There are many on amazon much cheaper. I have a 400 watt turbine on my truck camper. I use gate hinges on my ladder and it just clips in and I am ready to go. Less than 10 minutes. I think before you access this you need to set it up. It's less trouble than you think. I love mine. It makes a great backup and I would purchase it again if needed.

Thank you for doing this experiment, will be interested in the results. Amazon also carries the Isra Breeze 500W wind generator set. There is no solar panel for those who already have solar. It is $250, may be an option to experiment with in the future.

I have been meaning to make this comment for months. First, thank you for the valuable content.
However, your audio on video that involves an interview is not good. Put a lav mic connected to a pocket recorder on the person being interviewed with a limit of -6db. Bob projects enough to be picked up by the on camera mic - sometimes too much. Someone like Jim is quiet. I literally have to raise my volume to max to hear him. It's probably better to do the reverse for the convenience of the the person you're interviewing, but you have to get that mic closer to the talent. This issue shows up a lot when Bob does van tours. If the person turns away from the mic...
Yes, there's a little more work in postproduction, but it's worth the trouble. Bad audio hurts your channel.

VAWTs (Vertical Axis Wind Turbines) seem to be a better choice for mobile installations. Less bulky and easier to store when assembled (but not necessarily less weighty) and less sensitive to higher, gusty winds. And on top less likely to be hit by birds. Prices have come down, yet seem to be for the same rated output still a little bit higher than conventional turbines.

  • @georgegibson707

If you put the wind generator directly in front of the vehicle, it could produce surplus energy because the vehicle has the same wind drag with or without the generator.

Another wind generator is the turbine configuration rather than the propeller type.
It looks more structurally stable, to me, and more durable. At least in theory... I haven't seen as much info on it.
I used to work in the power industry, as a drafter designer, so yes, the turbine has caught my attention. Not as much space, could be made lighter, more easily protected, so on... But what is theory vs practice?
Wind generators are often used on sail boats. Where applicable, I plan on studying how that realm can transfer into RV/van technology.

I will definitely be watching for your next video on this. Where I am now (Canada) there are wind turbines all around me. It gets so windy here, even the stores have to post a warning to hold their door when opening. Not only that, we get a very good amount of sun too but winter time it is significantly shorter hours.
Now Im not too sure how sound and gravity work but I am googling it now. It's showing that gravity doesn't effect sound directly.
So if I were to have a telescopic pole to put it on with some kind of sound barrier under it, it may silence it enough to be comfortable?
I guess experimentation would come into play.

Richard, is that the kind we saw in the 1970s with cups to catch the wind made from 55gallon drums cut in half?

It would be great to have free energy Around the Clock

I would think having both solar and a small wind generator is the best plan.

Is it possible to add a gearbox to the wind generator that cuts in at 23mph and keeps it at that speed, changing gear with the strength of the wind?

I'm kind of surprised you haven't done a video on gravity lights since they make their own power. They are expensive but they don't need to be hooked up to a power source.

I dont think the wind generator wires have polarity. It should be three phase ac output.

Not interested in a wind generator. You really have to mount it around 60' to 80' in the air. That's where the jet stream is to operate it properly. I'd say your best bet, is to mount a sprocket where the blades would go and mount it to a bike some how and peddle your butt off for your power. 😂🤣😂

Can you drive with the wind generator and will it work in a jackary? Well that took care of my first guess unless you cruise at 23 on a small road. ...yuck lol

Would there be a way to mount that on the roof and as you drive the wind would create power

Also wind generators have moving parts and moving parts will fail much sooner than solar which has no moving parts.
