    • @brianmcclenahan617

The time to be located would take a while. Probably more than 5 minutes. They really don't regulate these s much as they used to. Pirate radio stations are more of an issue than an old time emergency radio signal going off for 1 minute. They could narrow it down to a city but they'd have no idea unless you told them and even then they wouldn't care unless they got something else that needs that signal clear.

Disconnect the antenna and you’re fine, it won’t broadcast very far. Some of the more modern radio transmitters have dummy antennas for testing purposes that prevent long range broadcast. It seems like you would need to use Morse code to transmit anyway so unless you use the morse key you won’t transmit an emergency signal. Doing a quick search the transmitter on this radio uses 500kHz which is an obsolete radio band and no longer monitored for emergencies. It is used for ship to shore NAVDAT now but there isn’t much chance of you causing any problems. unless the antenna is out and deployed you won’t get anyone’s attention at the FCC. There’s not much interest in hunting down rogue signals unless you are interfering with other broadcasts. If you live near the ocean, you might step on a ship’s signal but otherwise its no big deal.

I doubt anyone would be able to hear the beacon and even if they did, it would take multiple receivers to triangulate your approximate position.
