Thanks for watching. great to hear that people are watching from overseas. Yeah I'm looking forward to some warmer weather as we head into the summer. Though to be honest, winter has always been my favourite.
Looks like a fun trip, well except for the shivering in the middle of the night part. Glad to hear someone say that they prefer not to have to deal with the creepy crawlies while sleeping. Better luck fishing next time!

Its winter time where I live. So camping is done for the season. Stay safe. I have a canvas creel too keep fish in, if I don't have a cooler with me. Something to think about. You might think about switching to braided line. Then you could use 10 to 15 pound test, and its still "Light" line.
I actually spoke about this when I was out camping but the wind was soo terrible that I couldn't use the audio. I was basically talking about that very thing (being careful of camping on a river bed cause of flash flooding) and how I had been observing the weather reports and radars and knew there was no risk of it that night because there was no rain in the state at all. I wish I was able to keep that clip in.

Yeah I reckon you could. I was running a really 100 reel and really light braid (with a mono leader), no way that was going to hold a carp. Next river trip I'll bring a stronger settup and target some carp.

Nice one Luke . one good thing about freezing your ass of all night, is it got you up early to get some great shots of the fog lifting off the water . Happy camping :)
haha yeah but once the sun hits and you started warming up, you kind of want to stay lying down and catch up on all the sleep you missed. But yes the fog on the water was too much for me and I had to get up.
A guyline is a cord, rope, wire, cable, or nylon cord used to secure a tent, tarp, or hammock to the ground. They are also known as guy ropes, guy cables, guy wires, or strand wires.
Ever consider a cotton mesh pup tent or tipi for the summer? Mesh netting has been around hundreds of years and configured into tents. Wouldn't be too far off from your goal of camping with traditional materials. I'd imagine a few enterprising lads dragged out mosquito net from a bed somewhere and camped out in it.
Yeah I've been looking at the old U.S military pup tents as well. So far Homecamp look pretty good for new tents that have that style .. I'd love their style of tents without the vynal floor though. But otherwise I think they have great stuff.
Ive been fishing for something like 45 yrs, and I’ve recently changed my view a bit. There are so many little rivers and lakes that have so few target species like trout, because of too much fishing pressure, and fishy competition, yet they’re full of stuff like carp. So at least sometimes, why not go after the carp and give the others a break? You could feast on a huge, healthy meal, rather than a little snack. Learn to fillet them, and if you’re not that good at it and waste a little, who cares? It’s a carp. Season it up a little, and you’re good for a big meal, and the trout get a little help. In Canada it’s the same with Northern Pike. So many people turn their noses up at them, because they’re slimy and have a Y bone that makes them harder to fillet boneless. But they really do taste pretty good, and each pike eats hundreds, if not thousands of fish in its life. I know it’s more of a romantic thing to catch a trout for your video, but if there were carp there, those boys would have gone for the bigger easier meal every time.
You know what mate .. I have been having this type of thinking lately. I am going to do a survival challenge in the high country in December, and even though I'll still bring a little trout rod with a spinner .. I think I am going to be targeting carp for that very reason.
@ yeah, no reason to never have anything nice for yourself, but we can give the more prized species a break sometimes. Plus I’ve heard fresh carp is fine. I’ve only had it smoked, and it was good. Just watch a few videos on how to fillet, or just pluck the big Y bones as you eat. People are sick wussies about bones!
I actually spoke about this when I was out camping but the wind was so terrible that I couldn't use the audio. I was basically talking about that very thing (being careful of camping on a river bed cause of flash flooding) and how I had been observing the weather reports and radars and knew there was no risk of it that night because there was no rain in the state at all. I've got a big double swag that weighs at least 15k but that lil tent sounds way easier. Even at 8k would still be blissfull compared to the darche Gonna have to check out peak oil for that lambskin. Looks comfy as
Yeah mate, I actually think this solo view tent is a great settup even for car camping. Under an awning it would a beauty and it just as quick to set up as a big swag I would say.
@TheBeardedBushranger i do love room to move when I'm sleeping. I get claustrophobic in small swags but weight is always an issue with actually carrying it anywhere. I suppose if you want to properly rough if then you can't have it both ways. Lol
Nice one Luke - makes me really mad about those carp mate. You'd have to feel like getting in there and taking potshots at them with a 22 just to reduce the numbers
Yeah I scour google earth for potential spots, I check to see if it's in national park or state forest and then research the rules for that area. Then I look at access points and how far I need to drive in to get there. Many of the spots I go to now are in the general area I have camped in before and I have wanted to scope out these other places for a while.
"The things that we do to get to a good camp..." Quickly followed by the things that we do three times to get the footage. (Walks across once to setup the camera to get the shot, walks back to where he left the gear, then walks across for the third time to get the great shot of "man crossing stream". (How long before you can send across a drone to get the 2nd person shot?)
Haha yeah filming can get tedious. But I actually made it work for me and carried at least half of my stuff over the first time I brought the camera over, to make it a bit easier to cross. So since I would of had to do two trips accross the river it ended up not being too bad.
@@TheBeardedBushranger If I was doing what you do (which would be very unlikely lol), I would be cheating as much as possible with one of those 360-degree cameras. Thanks for these videos, hope your tribe is going well!
Is there any Gold panning to be done there? We dig down into the iron sand / black sand and pan areas like that when the water is low. Great Video Luke!
So on this particular river it's not allowed (so many rivers in Victoria that prospecting is not allowed) but further upstream another river about the same size flows into this one which is legal .. and I definantly will be getting into gold panning for future videos (in fact I'm getting a hold of a vintage gold pan this week)
@ Look for black sand. There’s a creek (Jack Wade) up in the Forty Mile mining district here in Alaska, which some guys started reworking. They dug into a bend of the creek with their bulldozer, exposing about a 50 ft swath of black sand in the creek bank. It was visible from the road, and they immediately put up a fence around their claim, with a security guy signing people in and out. It’s fun even if you just get a small fleck, or two, at a time!
Yeah you can. A lot of people don't like em, and call them mud marlins (they often eat dirty stuff off the river floor) but aparently if you catch them in clean freshwater streams they don't taste too bad. My next fishing adventure I might try and catch carp instead.
I actually spoke about this when I was out camping but the wind was soo terrible that I couldn't use the audio. @TheBeardedBushranger Love the videos. I'm always looking forward to the next one not everyone can get out and do it due to life commitments great stuff
Good video Luke! Nice suffering. Painful being cold all night. Did you consider dropping the tent onto yourself and using is as a swag? Just pull the poles out. Could’ve doubled it over and been quite cosy I think. The way it was you were trying to heat too much air. Your thoughts?
I hadn't considered that at all ... but that is a genuinly good idea. I'm guessing that would add a bit more warmth as well having that lay ontop of me!
@@TheBeardedBushranger bite compression bandage & plb ? All very foreign to me, could we have an explanation vid some time for us pommies please. Also what personal safety protocols do you take? I don't suppose you get cell phone reception out in the bush, case of twisted ankle, tumble or other emergency?
@@SpireUtd A compression bandage helps slow down the movement of snake bite venom in your lymphatic system. A PLB is a personal locater beacon .. basically a satelite gps device that sends out a warning signal when you are in distress and rescue teams can know your exact location. I also have my PLB registered to my emergancy contacts (my mum and dad) and so they will get a call. I always leave a fairly detailed map to my mum and dad about where I plan to be as well. Yeah no phone signal where I head out to, so this is the safest way.
Marketplace and etsy are good for second hand bags. Otherwise you can order a new bag from trailblazers. They are not exactly like the original water bags, but close enough. I've actually been thinking of hand making my own myself.
The tent comes with some plastic caps that go on the end of the poles. That will prevent water. I didn't use them though just cause of my view on plastics. But it would be pretty hard to leak cause the poles go through the holes very tightly.
Yup, since it is a very poor trout season, I'm going to change my mindset and target carp here on in. It's cause mud marlin (as they are also known) is usually a pretty bad tasting fish .. though I hear these clear water streams hold some decent tasting carp.

I always thought a guyline was where you waited to use the male toilets.
I'll see myself out.
wow, amazing video. Would love to see you journey with Scotty or Swagman!
Thanks mate. Last year we teamed up and all went on a trip on the coast. You can find the vid on Mattsy and Scottys channel.
@@TheBeardedBushranger no way ! I will definitely check it out , thanks for the heads up.
Nice scenery and great equipment Luke. No fox screams😅 1:01
haha yeah scotties video was a hoot. Have you ever heard a koala growl in the night 😄
@ No I haven’t.
ripper as always mate.
Thanks mate.
😊
We are so lucky in Australia that there is no issue with bears.
People think Australia is one of the most dangerous places to camp ... but I say Africa and North America would be way worse.
if it ever starts raining heavy - I'd move to higher ground, the rivers rise super fast there...
I wish I was able to keep that clip in.
@@TheBeardedBushranger All good as long as you are aware.
I assisted with a documentary on one of those rivers a while back. it's the fastest rising river in the southern hemisphere...
@@TheAussieRepairGuy isn’t that the Avon because it has a huge catchment area and tributes. I’ve seen that rise 15m within hours.
@@brettwatts5301 That would be the one.
They wanted footage of the intersection of the avon and turton rivers.

I just did the Channels Walk recently (which is where you were at the end of the video). Awesome spot. Looks like you started from a different area to me though.
Keep up the good work mate
You spot it mate, well done.
I've got a big double swag that weighs at least 15k but that lil tent sounds way easier. Even at 8k would still be blissfull compared to the darche
Gonna have to check out peak oil for that lambskin.
Lol
Nice choice of background music
Oh cheers, yeah trying not to be too overbearing with the music. But I appreciate you commenting on the music choice.
Nice one Luke - makes me really mad about those carp mate. You'd have to feel like getting in there and taking potshots at them with a 22 just to reduce the numbers
haha I've seen people bow hunting carp which looks fun. in the morning I was able to get so close to them, I almost scooped one out of the water.
Watch out for the drop bears mate
I eat the drop bears!
Really enjoyed this magical spot Luke, do you pick spots on a map or do you go recomendations from friends? Looking forward to more trips mate!
Yeah I scour google earth for potential spots, I check to see if it's in national park or state forest and then research the rules for that area. Then I look at access points and how far I need to drive in to get there.
Many of the spots I go to now are in the general area I have camped in before and I have wanted to scope out these other places for a while.
Burnie the snag man
😂
Thanks for these videos, hope your tribe is going well!
its ok to take a sleeping bag nothing to prove by freezing cheers mate.
haha yeah I know, but I'm really enjoying my heritage materials lately. Although I do love my nevegear quilt.
That looked like such a peaceful spot. Can you eat Carp?
Yeah you can. A lot of people don't like em, and call them mud marlins (they often eat dirty stuff off the river floor) but aparently if you catch them in clean freshwater streams they don't taste too bad. My next fishing adventure I might try and catch carp instead.
As a fellow Aussie one thing you should know is to never camp on a river bank like that flash flooding
@TheBeardedBushranger
Love the videos. I'm always looking forward to the next one not everyone can get out and do it due to life commitments great stuff
Nothing like a black pudding snag for breaky,,, lmao
Nothing better then burnt sausages I say 😄
Good video Luke! Nice suffering. Painful being cold all night.
Did you consider dropping the tent onto yourself and using is as a swag?
Just pull the poles out.
Could’ve doubled it over and been quite cosy I think. The way it was you were trying to heat too much air.
Your thoughts?
I hadn't considered that at all ... but that is a genuinly good idea. I'm guessing that would add a bit more warmth as well having that lay ontop of me!
You find some terrific spots 👍 do ya carry a snake bite compression bandage ? Keep up the good vids 👍
Yeah mate, in my emergency medical kit I always have a snake bite bandage and a plb with me.
@@TheBeardedBushranger plb👍good one knakers, if ya ever get stuck for ideas and early settler gold prospector camp n bit of panning, just a thought
@@RandomAussie2033 Yeah I'm planning to get into that actually!!
Awesome video mate. Question for you. I live in South Australia and can't find an authentic water bag anywhere. Any thoughts?
Marketplace and etsy are good for second hand bags. Otherwise you can order a new bag from trailblazers. They are not exactly like the original water bags, but close enough. I've actually been thinking of hand making my own myself.
Thanks for that, have a great day mate
Hey mate, love ya vids. Just out of curiosity, would that tent let water in where the inside poles pop through the roof??
The tent comes with some plastic caps that go on the end of the poles. That will prevent water. I didn't use them though just cause of my view on plastics. But it would be pretty hard to leak cause the poles go through the holes very tightly.
@ ah right. Yeah as soon as I saw it I thought “that’s gotta leak”. Cheers for the reply mate. Enjoying your videos 👍🏻
You looked like Tom Sawyer in bare feet and rolled up pants standing on the bank. 😅
haha with the braces on and all!
What was that splashing around in the water
Bunch of carp in the morning. I got really close to them in the morning and they were in quite shallow water I reckon I could of speared one.
Why don’t you target the carp?
Yup, since it is a very poor trout season, I'm going to change my mindset and target carp here on in.
It's cause mud marlin (as they are also known) is usually a pretty bad tasting fish .. though I hear these clear water streams hold some decent tasting carp.
Great video Luke - that's a bloody nice spot.
Thanks homecamp. Loved the tent and looking forward to using it again.
another ripper vid mate, shame about the trout - next time!
Hard season for trout that's for sure. I just got back from the high country and finally caught one little trout haha
Who ordered the medium rare?
haha sausage or fish?
@TheBeardedBushranger snags. That fish looked absolutely perfect though.
