Glad you enjoyed it! And that was totally my goal. We walked away with so much footage and it was a treat to tag along and see how this town has transformed itself!
Y’all…. Brookings South Dakota is another hidden jewel!! Not exactly a road trip, but a flight away! 😉 our HS grows on all the plugs for the city’s baskets here, too, and we’ve got the largest university (and only land-grant) in the state, with its beautiful campus and arboretum! TONS of parks and trails, a tree city USA, etc. trust me…it’s worth a visit!! 💛💛💛
My son took a construction class, his junior and senior years of high school. He helped to build three houses. Even though he did not end up in the construction trade, it has been very, very helpful in making improvements to his own home.
Isn’t it?!? And I love that it started by Nancy wanting to plant flowers outside the elementary school. What a gift every day to those kids to know they are loved. 💕
Right?!? Not sure if you watched Janey’s video, but they’ve revived their entire downtown. It was at 35% vacancy and now there isn’t a single building space available.
How Gorgeous. I sure would love a Nancy exit in my area. Absolutely stunning job by All It shows all your talent and dedication. Pride in your town is Awesome!😊❤😮
Every single video you share is so intoxicating! You catch me up in your enthusiasm and joy for all things garden! (PS...I don't garden, but I will be, very soon!!!!! I found you when I started my journey into learning about gardens, and you got me HOOKED)
That high school!! Oh my gosh, it makes me tear up thinking about all the opportunities that opens up for kids that aren’t necessarily wired for a “liberal arts 4-year college degree” type of track. Allowing kids to explore thier own personal giftedness and invest in their unique talents; it’s just the best!! I’m so with you Kate! Much love to you and Janey sweet friend!! 🥰🥰
Yes! Our kids have so many gifts to offer this world… they just need one person or one moment to crack open that passion and creativity. I was so floored by how deeply the high school invests in these kids. It just made my heart full being a mom of teenagers. 💞
Kate thank you so much!! I am learning so much about America from my laptop!! This was so beautiful - what an inspiring town and it's wonderful people.
Thanks Kate, for such a great “visit” you presented of CastleRock. I live in the south sound area of WA and have been past the CastleRock exit hundreds of times in my life and would always wonder about this little logging town and if it was as quaint as my imagination said it might be….Well this has surpassed that. Your narration of the gardens is always SO GOOD!! It’s so relaxing.. and fun… and you make me laugh with some of your exclamations over the beauty of it all!!🌸💕
I watched Janey’s video too. Who would have thought Castle Rock was a signature PW’s city? It made me think, every time I’m coming up I-5, I drive past that CR in a circle floral display. It all makes sense now. I’m going to have to drive down there and take a peak. I’m only 30-45 minutes north of them.
Yes! I honestly was SO surprised. The Vault is an awesome coffee/book/ice cream shop (made from an old bank) and Los Altos for their Quesabirria tacos… highly recommend!
Auto correct. Grr. Arg. Yeah. I grew up in Ashland. Lithia Park was my playground. Even now, when I visit family in Ashland, I spend a lot of time in the park. Thanks for the dahlia name.
I wish i grew up with this type of high school, as a 22 year old with a passion for gardening from my great-grandma who watches you, Janey and been watching Garden Answer for years. i cant find this type of opportunity in my small town in very south Texas. i would do anything to find a job with gardening here, and this type of school would have helped big time with that.
Thank you for this video! I loved learning all of this about Castle Rock. I live in the Seattle area and can’t wait to stop there the next time I have an I-5 trip. Speaking of amazing small town gardens, I love Edmonds and their amazing focus on gardens in the downtown. I live in Kirkland and we can lean a thing or two from Edmonds! Gorgeous and amazing!
Oh Edmonds is SO cute. They have one of the best kids public splash parks I’ve ever seen! Also, my brother lives in Portland and so I’ve driven past Castlerock for years. I feel like I discovered a treasure right under my nose!
Thank you for talking about how they water! I was so curious!❤❤❤ cute town! sheresha has such a vibrant personality I hope she has a RUclips channel I’d love to follow her! If not she should start one!!!❤❤ also the green and white geraniums with red flowers is wilhelm langguth. A favorite of mine❤❤❤
Oh good call on the geranium! And she heads up all the Castlerock social media. I know they have a fabulous IG account, but I would love to see her do more lives. Doesn’t she have the personality for YT?!?
Omg Kate if you're ever in Michigan You should come to dow gardens in Midland!! They have so many unique gardens and they have a butterfly house open in the sping!!💜💜 loved the video kate!
CTE = Career and Technical Education. Students also have the opportunity to earn College Credits while taking these classes. Great stuff! Teachers for the most part have been in the industry (ag, construction, business etc.) and have chosen to come and teach, often taking a big pay cut. I have so much respect for CTE programs.
So impressive all schools should bring back the trades in school it would be wonderful everthing can’t just be technology and ,HR and phone soliciting and medical we need electrican welders ,woodshop and horticulture for our young people to thrive in Im a senior we had all those things thank you for taking us along
I just texted your video to my neighbour/gardening friend. She responded, "Next year's road trip." (She just returned from the Swan Island dahlia festival.)
Yay! Hit up The Vault when you are there. It’s the cutest coffee/book shop created from a former bank! Oh! And the Mexican restaurant (Los Altos) had Quesabirrias tacos that were to DIE for.
Great video, I live in and love a small town! Years ago my family visited a small town in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 called Niagara-On-The-Lake, it's so dead gorgeous, check it out. ❤
I so enjoyed Janey’s video of this town. You managed to deliver a whole new perspective…and it was awesome! Thank you!

Hi Kate, just when I feel I have garden fatigue for the year, it’s videos like this one which gives me that needed renewed energy ! 🥰🌸🇨🇦
Thank you for saying so! I think August and late September bring a lot of fatigue in the garden so these little trips are good for my soul too.

I literally met the Mayor as he was doing carpentry at their new event venue they’re building. It is wildly wonderful how much they love their town!
All high schools should have that opportunity for all of our children love that
I was floored by what their high school is able to offer and the passion of all their teachers. It’s so incredible!

So true! These were the most incredible dedicated team of civic leaders, teachers and volunteers.
