I had one of those days. I feel a friend let me down because I really needed to talk to someone...and they weren’t there. I was about to watch my RUclips subscriptions...and lo and behold...along comes Pohl Barn Productions with a 21 minute video. All is ok for now 🙂...thank you Doug.
Never a bad idea to take pride in your work and make sure what you send out is satisfactory. It doesn't hurt that you explained your process because a lot of people don't understand the sanding process and struggle to get the finish they want. Of course, they have to be patient enough to sit through and learn how to sand and then actually do it. 😂
Nice to see "the rest of the story" You take great pride in your work and prove you want the customer satisfied 👍 Have a great weekend. Thanks for your time and the video.
You, Sir, are a craftsman and businessman with integrity! You care about your customers and how your product represents you. I also appreciate how you showed us the process of finishing your turnings. I have a similar opportunity. I recently bought a portable sawmill. An elderly friend had a tree to down during Hurricane Debby. I'm taking the logs out of it and stacking the unusable parts up so he can burn them. Yesterday, he told me that I can do that if I want, but I don't have to. I told him that I said I would clean it up. I'm not going to leave a mess for him. That seemed to please him. It's the small things that make a big difference. Now I have a deal to get more logs from him as time goes on.
hi Doug... i beenturning bowls for 55 years plus.. You are one of the first to show and admit many bowl finished shown on utube suck.. Too many folks make stuff finish it and sell. Many are not stable and finishing them is too early.. Others use a finsh that is not durable and if water or alcohol are spilled on them the spill shows. For years i used a oil based urathane and finishing took many coat and time.. 25 years ago i began using water based urthane.. much faster.. The goals was always to get enough on and then buff it out without burning thru the finish.. Nowdays i use resin and use a fast drying resin while still on the lathe and turn the speed down say 10 rpm till dry.. Nice to see you redo the failed finish..
I can't believe the difference. It's a new bowl. I also use channel locks to open my can of sanding sealer. I really like to see the process of sanding, it's satisfying to see the scratches get finer and finer before they are gone completely. Thanks for sharing a little more about your process.
Yes, sanding is boring. However, it is good to see how others sand and re-finish to compare how one does it and see if there are things that might help my own techniques. The figure in that bowl is outstanding. Kudos to you for making sure a quality product goes out.
Was great before. Even better now. I’m happy you addressed the line going around the piece. That’s a weird phenomenon I’ve never heard anyone explain. I’d love to know what it is. Anyway, looks like it’s finished nicely now.
