    Cutting out all sugar from diet has kept my son(16) seizure free for 5 months so far. he used to have tonic/clonic weekly- even when taking Redilev.Have no idea what the sugar connection is,but it seems to be working.He eats normally otherwise (even WHOLE fruits..but no processed fruit like juice/sweets from fruit)

      It has been the same for me. My medication works well, but cutting out processed foods and reducing my sugar intake has reduced my side effects, increased my energy, and improved my quality of life. Nutrition is so important for everyone.

      I would seek a appointment with an epileptologist (neurologist that specializes in epilepsy) and request a EEG and MRI. The EEG is used to find any abnormal brain activity and the MRI can see if there is any brain trauma. I would keep a journal and write down any symptoms you are having. I apologize that it took me so long to respond. I normally receive an email when someone comments and I didn't receive this one for some reason. I just came by it now when answering another comment. If you need any information, please let me know. I am happy to help.

    I started having symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy like phantom smells and extreme Deja vu. But my EEG and mri came back normal. So I’m really confused as to whether I have epilepsy or not

    • @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
      @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation  8 месяцев назад +1

      Doctors diagnose individuals with epilepsy when they have had at least two unprovoked seizures. I have had epilepsy for 43 years now and there have been times when my EEG was normal. The extreme deja vu and phantom smells are auras. When my seizures were not controlled I would feel very frightened and then lose consciousness. Here is the link for our temporal lobe epilepsy video. Same here, I started having seizures when I was 24, idky... I've only had 2 black out seizures, the rest where focal seizures but it's odd that my mri was normal and only showed "slowing" a couple times. I'm triggered by music sometimes or even flash 📸 but I've never found out WHY it came to be
      but I can nearly swear it has something to do with my phyci "cracking" due to family/spouse abuse and years of ptsd.... sometimes my seizures feel like a counter part of me is trying to surface like a separate entity.
      My computer like mind disappeared after my first seizure plus the feeling of disconnection and projecting occurs. The mind is a VERY fragile thing and if not protected correctly will lead to consequences 😢

    There is so many types of magnesium which one is suitable to aid with seizures

    • @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
      @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation  Год назад +1

      I would check with your neurologist/epileptologist to see. Depending on the seizures that you have and the medication you are on, they may suggest something specific. I take magnesium because I get migraines at times. My doctor said that magnesium helps to block signals in the brain that can cause migraines. I get them when the barometric pressure changes and I found since adding magnesium to my care plan, I have fewer migraines and when I do have them, they are not as intense.

    How can I reduce my epilepsy

    • @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
      @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation  7 месяцев назад +2

      It is best to speak with your doctor regarding controlling seizures because epilepsy is treated on an individual basis. One thing I have done to keep my seizures under control is to eat well by avoiding processed foods, get a good night's sleep, exercise, and do what I can to reduce stress.

      My advice after 30 years of epilepsy, is to always do your research on medication. Just because a doctor prescribes you a drug, it dosent mean they are good at their job and have given you the correct one. Join in with epilepsy action, the advice and support can really help. Take daily multivitamins to help recover from your seizures, we lose these vitamins as we age, so it’s important to boost them, especially after a seizure. Now, doctors don’t tell you this, but a seizure is like a concussion on your brain everytime, varying in strength of course. If you are lethargic or have brain fog after a seizure, this is why. You don’t need to smoke, do illegal drugs, drink alcohol or caffeine, or eat processed meats anymore. You need healthy foods that can promote and support brain health and the bodies recovery from a seizure. No more fast food, exercise more and stay healthy. Doctors can be intimidating, but don’t be afraid to question their decisions they make. It’s your body, your life. Take care. 👍

    • @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
      @DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation  Год назад

      I'm not a physician so I cannot diagnose. I found an article in Science Direct that explains the changes in the brain resulting in loss of taste. Here is the link: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1059131119307034. When it comes to spitting, I found a brief description in Neurology. They state ictal spitting can last 10-25 seconds and is an automatic behavior such as lip smacking. Both symptoms are tied to temporal lobe epilepsy. The one with spitting is connected to the mesial temporal lobe. Here is the link for you: n.neurology.org/epearls/20160119. We created a new temporal lobe epilepsy video this year and it explains in detail the substructures of the temporal lobe. Watching that may be beneficial for you so you can get more of an idea of the function and complexity of the temporal lobe. If you have any other questions, please let me know, I'm happy to help.
