these animations are really impressive i usually see frame by frame animations but these are actually finished i love it
Belos can only be as terrifyingly effective as the ultimate villain of The Owl House the more human and relatable he is to us. It's like seeing a mirror that acts as a gateway to madness. Of a possible future where we made the wrong, hurtful choices in our lives.
Yeah I think his backstory gives his character so much depth ! He’s such a complex character and I can’t wait to animate the rest of his story

Adam is such a fitting name for a Grimwalker. It only makes sense that someone like Philip, having spent the formative years of his life in a place like colonial America, would name his first creation after the biblical first man. It's very clever! Also alludes to the fact that he was playing God. Makes a lot of sense and is very clever.

Which is more scary than he simply sees them as tools. They are toys to recreate something he lost. And loves them as much as a child who loves their toys... until they break.
@@evanbao93 I think he really loved the first few of Caleb's clones like his true brother but at the time goes on and many of the Grimwalkers walked away from his idea, he simply saw them as nothing more but tool bc he knew they'd "betray" him at any moment anyway.

I’m going to split the rest of the portraits into “mini episodes” most likely between 2-5 minutes each because I’m doing all the art on my own (the collab here was an exception, I actually find it easier to animate alone because I have my own specific workflow) and I like to be able to post more regularly so people don’t forget about the show completely in between videos.
But when all the portraits are animated and put together it’s probably gonna be longer than a canon episode ahah

@@faithnorthrup3662 if it was ever rebooted, here’s what I want the reboot to look like I don’t want them to change the characters personalities too much and also still keep the main plot intact give characters that didn’t get much screen time more development delve into certain characters backstory is more and stay true to Dana‘s original vision of the show and also give it more episodes, especially that beach episode
I love your work so much. I always feel that the Wittebane plot had much more to tell than it could and your animations fill that hole. Not only the animation itself is amaizing because it is almost identical to the show, but everything about your videos are amaizing, like in this video where you put the Belos thene in the background like the show used to do. It's just so hard to express the love I have for your work, so the only thing I can say is thank you, Magpie. Keep being so great and never let anyone push you down, because your art is beautiful and if people put you in a hurry to finish your animations don't listen to them, to have your impecable quality takes time and hard work. So yeah, I'll look forward to your next animation like I always do whenever it's ready. Thank you, again.

If this becomes a full series omg. Knowing Disney may never give us a Wittebane movie, spin off or anything about their lore hurts so I´m glad the fandom is digging into the story and making more content.
This is beautifull, would have believed it´s from the show or some trailer if it wasn´t for the title.
I like this idea that Philip wasn’t always a jerk, but like Luz, was just this bright eyed kid who as a result of his upbringing, just became this jaded, hateful person. But he still retains parts of his humanity.
I heavily disliked how the finale, specifically Papa Titan acted as if Luz could never become like Belos because he [Belos] was just always a stuck up jerk who liked killing. It’s a toxic mindset that you are either born bad or you are not. Ironically, this bad/good mindset is exactly the kind of thing Belos grew up believing.
I really like seeing people who acknowledge Belos still has some depth while still accepting he is a bad person who did bad things. The fandom really suffers from this Black and White mentality. Especially when it comes to antagonists. It especially comes off as frustrating when you realize that people in the fandom with this black and white thinking hate on anyone who likes Belos, who was also this person with a very black and white mentality.

There is so much depth to Philip that was hinted at all throughout the show and never really explored.
Just because what he did was wrong doesn’t mean he was born like this and I think showing the progression of how he got to where he is in the show is infinitely more interesting than him being evil from birth.
There are so many layers to his character and I can’t wait to explore them
Yeah at this point, I think Dana probably doesn't want to touch Phillip era again bc i think she actually hates writing Belos so she put up hints to his tragic backstory on the background to give Belos a reason to be evil and then let him be fully evil for the sake of evil in ss3 rather than fully fleshed out his character arc on screen. And yes there're a lot of potential screen time for Dana to write about Phillip's backstory like the entire "For The Future" episode but she chose to write about Hexside's nonsense instead which doesn't contribute anything to the next episode even though she fully knew her time is limited. Plus i saw some of her replies on twitter implying about her not liking Belos. I think Dana doesn't want to explore Belos's character deeply anymore bc she also hated Belos so that's why she made him look like an one-dimensional villain in ss3.
It really does hurt seeing the wasted potential of Belos because as good as the show is, Dana seems to have a bit of a problem with the morality of her antagonists. We already went over Belos.
For starters, Amity: She started out as a bully, and while what she did to Willow was not as bad as Boscha, she still went out of way to be nasty. While she was pressured to break off her friendship with Willow by Odalia, Amity had no excuse to be mean, and outright make Willow feel worse about herself. The show doesn’t truly acknowledge this. Labyrinth Runners only gives us Amity acknowledge Willow as a powerful witch, but even this is very surface level.
Amity’s Father Alador. Like Belos, Dana is implied to have some bias around him, and it is theorized he was designed to be neurodivergent coded so fans would like him. I will concede the show does a good job at acknowledging he was more neglectful, such as in Reaching Out, where it shows Amity is entitled to not immediate forgive him, but they end up going out of their way to emphasize him as a victim by villifying his wife.
Odalia: While it is okay for Odalia to one of those hatable characters, it feels like they tried to make her so dislikable they actively contradicted her personality. The end of escaping expulsion gives her some depth by hinting at her and Alador having some kind of positivity in their relationship, but then Clouds on the Horizons makes her out to be so greedy she is willing to overlook genocide. Odalia is framed as a cunning individual, so you would think she wouldn’t just blindly trust the emperor after finding out he lied to her.
Papa Titan: I like some aspects of his character, such as how he really just this down to Earth, fun dad character. But when he told Luz they were different from Belos because their goals were genuine, it made me realize the narrative was ignoring the harm Papa Titan did. They say he “attacked the wrong person” but this implies he was in the right for attempting to imprison someone.
Caleb: In a recent Q and A, Dana said Caleb was kind of a “pet lover” who bonded with Evelyn, and was easily able to forgo his life with Philip. This is intended to make him come off as the good brother, the better of the two Wittebane brothers, but it inadvertently makes Caleb come off as uncaring about his brother, and the implications that he left Philip to be raised alone in a religious cult. I think Caleb actually is a good parallel to Camila. Both are grieving parental figures who lost someone close to them (Manny and the Wittebane parents respectively). But due to their inability to healthily cope, they inadvertently projected their trauma onto their loved one. Camila tried to pressure Luz to fit into society, making her daughter think she had to lose her creativity to be happy, and Caleb made Philip think being a witch Hunter, and proving himself to Gravesfield and God that he was a pious servant of the Lord. But unlike with the happier ending with the Nocedas, Philip became indoctrinated into Witch Hunting, which led him to want to save humanity from evils. When Caleb met Evelyn, her influence softened him, and when Philip found them, he tried to get his little brother and wife to get along. But because of his religious conditioning, Philip thought Caleb had been seduced, and tried to kill the witch who put a spell on his brother.

Completely agree with this. We never said that he shouldn't be punished for all the things he did. We never said he should be "forgiven" or "redemeed" for what he's done.

This series is some of the best owl house fan content I've ever seen, and I've been active in the fandom since season 1. The Wittebanes brothers have such an interesting story that we never got to see, and honestly, I'm kind of glad we didn't, because I love these so much that I don't want anything in them to be reconfirmed by the show. You take what was implied in the show, like Philip being a dark reflection of what could have happened to Luz and Belos' clingy relationship with Caleb, and you add to it in such neat ways while also delivering it all through full animations. It's beautiful. I especially love the segment at the end, and how it frames Philip as a victim of indoctrination and conformity who was once just another nerdy, orphaned outsider in Gravesfield, and in another time they could have gone down each other's paths.

I always love seeing owl house fans different and similar opinions of the Wittebane Brothers and grimwalker stories 😊. There's a lot of story just from those portraits in Hollow Mind alone.

@DatTran1 Yeah, true, I remember during the Owl House art gallery in October, one of the crew members said that Belos was a hard character to write. But even if The Owl House did come back in any type of way, either being comics, shorts, or some type of a spin-off by Dana Terrace/Disney, I think it would be cool if we did get some more information on the backstory of the Wittebane Brothers. It doesn't have to be an entire series (although that would be really cool). I think she said during one of the Instagram livestream's that it could be a possibility 😊.

Heyyy I didn’t know you had a RUclips too ! And OMG that would be the dream. I wonder if I should reach out to him when I get closer to a portrait needing his Belos voice - idk how Disney contracts work regarding him voicing fan content, and I imagine he’s a very expensive actor, but when he sees all the work and love put into this, maybe there’s a chance he’d agree who knows !

I kind of remembered watching your videos as a child, watching them again was so nastalogic
I think deep inside, Philip didn't want the grimwalkers to die. Like he tells the collector, it hurts them everytime they betray him. He kept trying to recreate Caleb in his own image, someone to replace him but also someone that wanted to hunt down witches like him. He kept trying to make the perfect replica.
Personally I think it’s not that he’s attached to the grimwalkers as themselves, but I do believe him when he told the collector it hurts him every time they betray him. But more because it makes him re live the feeling of betrayal he had from Caleb. I think every time they die he’s re living that day, but I also don’t think he really sees the grimwalkers as people either, I think they’re here because he can’t cope with the grief and having them around is his own really dark way to keep himself “sane”. Like deep down he knows they’re “pretend Caleb” but he lets himself believe they’re him on the surface, if that makes sense ?
Maybe also part of him thinks that if he can get at least one to stay loyal to him, it would be proving himself that the real Caleb had it in him to stay loyal to him too.

This is amazing! I love seeing all your animations about the Wittebane brothers and the grimwalkers. There were so many things the show still left a mystery and seeing these animations makes me really happy and helps satisfy my curiosity. I kind of feel that in the future when the animations with the dying golden guards portraits come out my heart is really going to get shattered but I'm really excited about all the future animations to come :D
I have a specific idea for one of them already (the floofy hair one), since the portrait of Philip cutting off his ears came so late (he was already in his Emperor clothes), I was going to tie in that Grimwalker’s death to that, something about him seeing the round ears and finding out that way, and that would be what caused Philip to make his ears go chop chop

I didn’t really animate that well at all before this, I just love Philip so much I forced myself to learn ahah
As for backgrounds, I’ve had experience drawing them for shows for awhile now, it just takes a lot of practice trying to replicate the style as closely as possible :)
