I actually only disliked her first designs because they didnt look to well (specifically angel, i didnt mind the rest)

The way Alastor is canonically scared/hates dogs and she made Husk a dog is so funny and ironic to me, I love it 😂
And also him being a hellhound fits canonically with the show lmao
That means it will probably harder for Husk to be owned by Alastor because Alastor hates dogs

That might actually be interesting if incorporated into their characters...
Alastor owning the a soul of a doglike demon, being particularly domineering and aggressive towards them to make feel more powerful over something he fears. I think Alastor who is power-hungry that he engages in petty rivalry and is insecure when reminded he is also under someone's control. People like that despise the parts of themself they perceive as weak.
With that in mind i would have loved to see more or Alastor and Husk interactions and having Husk be a dog would be relevant to their dynamic. like, what do you guys think.
[correction: Al being canonically *afraid* of dogs might be that... he actually just dislikes them. i thought the fear thing had been a well established tid-bit in the fandom. WHOOPSIES]

Husk being a dog/wolf and having that powerful looking jaw makes him look more intimidating which is fitting for his previous overload status. Also adds a sense of irony considering Alastor hates dogs. Your artwork is great!

i completely agree with the body type critique!! i think changing their body types from super skinny to resemble their personalities better (like vaggie having such a strong physique instead of a teeny waist) i honestly loved this video and the character redesigns as a fan of the show :)

@@user-ayiy824jbdit’s likely just an art style choice by Vivienne. It’s completely fine to not draw certain body types as long as you’re not purposefully insulting said body types.
@@AverageArtistAve i understand its a choice and i honestly am not talking abt different body type representation. im talking about how its lazy. she draws one body for every character and slaps a slightly different head on them. its like how same face syndrome hinders your capabilities and is just lazy if youre a professional.

@AverageArtistAve thing is, these designs aren't her own 2013 ocs anymore, Hazbin is now a mainstream show supported by the likes of Amazon. Viv kinda has a duty as a professional creator to widen her designs to represent different types of people since her show is a product that's meant to be viewed by general audiences.
THIS is how you make a comeback y’all.
Address controversy.
Own up to your mistakes.
Redo it.
Move on.

As someone who did not know Alastor is supposed to be Black until watching this video, I really REALLY appreciate your redesign. I somehow knew about his serial killer backstory and deer motif but just thought his magic was only vodoun INSPIRED not that he is LITERALLY CREOLE. As a Black person in the South who has also studied Creole culture, I can understand why people might be apprehensive to this aspect of his character. The last thing we need is yet another white person demonizing our culture in the media. But then I got to thinking, why do we not mind Dr. Facilier from Princess and the Frog? Why do we give his villainous vodoun a pass? And then I remembered. Mama Odie.
Mama Odie is not only the Queen of the Bayou, a wise and good guiding figure on the protagonists' journey. She is also a master of vodoun. She is the antithesis to Dr. Facilier. This correctly represents, at least to me, that vodoun is NOT inherently evil but rather a neutral art that can be used for good or for bad.
Hazbin Hotel is trying to pull off a Dr. Facilier without a Mama Odie as a foil. And that is a VERY slippery slope.

Plus she uses a lot of voodoo symbols and treats it as an "oooh spoooky religion evil black magic"
I feel it probably doesn't help that voodoo is usually portrayed as evil with VERY few examples of it being portrayed as positive or even just neutral, so that fact she is not only has Alastor use voodoo evilly, but she is also using real voodoo symbols to do so just makes it worse.
He's mixed
If at some point, they actually introduce his mother in the show it would be really great since she is also a voodoo practitioner and ended up in heaven. It would be really good if the show explored that
I saw controversy about lavendertowne and was like "what?? They are like the most unproblematic person" then I saw it was from the hazbin hotel fan base and haters 😭. Sorry you got so much criticism and I’m glad you spotlighted the artist that had their work stolen cuz I didn’t even know that! Anyway I always love your designs including these can’t wait to see what you do next!
Also this might be a bit of a task but have you ever thought about doing a based off the book design of danmei/baihe novels like heaven officials blessing? I feel like with those all have so many adaptations but being hindered by censorship there’s a lot missing from the original novels in the designs we see and I would love to see what you come up with! (Though heaven officials blessing is literally longer then the Bible so 😭)

Exactly. Bullying an artist into apologizing for making a harmless art video is ridiculous.
I mean, accidentally stealing someone's art and using it uncredited in your video is still bad if you find out and don't apologize it's worse.
As for the designs she made, I didn't really care redesigns I watch lots of artists make their own designs, but starting the video with (yo I didn't watch this show and I don't know much about it but I'm going to judge the designs based on these random frames I found on third party websites...) and the fact that one of those images was fanart. That was a mistake but it was an easily preventable mistake. She was sick and did something halfhazardly, while I very much don't think she or anyone should ever be getting hate comments, it was a bad decision. I say this a huge lavendertown fan too. Her original redesigns looked like the hazbins done in her comic style which I most of them, but I did hate the reasons for the changes.
Example: here she states angels fur makes him look like a dog but spiders ARE furry, and she states that Angel's six arms make him look like an insect but a insects ARENT furry and watching the show again just first episode or pilot, angel is constantly switching his number of arms. The lack of knowledge of how these characters move is the main concern here. And I do like her drawings here as well mostly, it's the characters if they were drawn more to their time periods, but there is still a lack of understanding the characters motivations. She states Charlie is a princess type character and plays that up which is nice as a design, but Charlie the character is motivated by trying to prove herself as more then the princess title. She where's a suit because she wants to be taken seriously. It's kind of tone deaf.and you don't have to know the lore to know any of that, you just have to watch literally one episode. I have never been on the wiki, I know very few things about the background of these characters. But I know (spoilers ahead) husk reveals he was an overlord and his having wings definitely fits in with the show, they are NOT angelic, Valentino has wings and that guys a huge D. But having WATCHED the show I know people tend to open their wings during emotional moments and one of the few times Hisker uses his is when he is having a very epic moment with Angel. Wings are not angelic they are revealing. Lucifer pulls his out when he's opening up to his daughter, Valentino pulls his put when he is seething, Vaggie loses them when she is shamed and regains them when she is motivated by love for Charlie. Wings open when people are opening themselves to others whether for good or bad reasons)
As many a teacher has repeated throughout my life, you have to know the rules if you want to break them and have it mean something, otherwise it's just a mistake. She drew some nice art but and it's clear her decisions were intentional but the intentions were based on poor research and that is where their is a mistake. If I had never watched Winnie the pooh and drew critiqued the show based on surface level knowledge stating that the bears anatomy is all wrong and or thinking that piglets belly stripes is a shirt because I didn't realize they were based on toys then while my critiques may be valid, the lack of context still means they are wrong. Even if i drew them in perfect realism.

I think there is some validity in the problem with offering criticism for something you actually didnt know about though honestly. Like, if I dont know anything about football, I probably would get raked over the coals for criticizing how football is played by football fans who know why things are that way and enjoy how it's played.
That's not saying you cant critique football(or anything) but it would be just making an ass of yourself not to admit that you're ignorant on it when people are upset that you had a wild take.
I respect Lavender more for owning up to the flaws in her video and doing it better than if she stamped her feet and whined that the fandom was bullying her.
In the original pilot, Vaggie was quick to anger and explode but due to people pointing out it could be a stereotype it was removed in the final show. I wish they did something else with her personality in the final show :))

As a Latina I can tell you I found nothing offensive about Vaggie in the pilot. The people who were complaining about her back then were just hypersensitive people who weren't even Latino thinking they could speak for us. I found that whole "controversy" SO incredibly stupid. Latinos can have tempers just as much as any other person in the world, people are people after all. Some members of my family can have tempers I can tell you that. I wish that they had kept Vaggie's temper honestly. It would have been a good character flaw for her to work through, which could have led to some good character development. And now with the reveal that she's a fallen angel, she's apparently not even Salvadoran anymore which I found so disappointing.

Only thing I wish she kept was the hair tbh. I know it would probably suck to fight with but the shape scratches the itchy spot in my brain and I think it makes a fun stand-in for the wings, angel or not. Guess it's just personal preference though

I can never hate Lavendertowne but, at the same time I think valid criticism is important. Before drawing anything it is good having all the information. I genuinely enjoyed watching these new designs as I wasn’t a big fan of her original redesigns.
The mentions of the wiki and all the obscure fan-canon is one of the glaring holes in the show. With such a large cast but so few episodes we get very little about any of the characters, even the main ones.

Edit: god you COOKED with those red tassels on the v2 Vaggie design, and Husk’s dog snout on that real life human guy body is giving Fantastic Mr. Fox gritty realness. The alastor section was great; love that you can see the antlers now + his creepy lil tilt-n-wave pose!!
I feel like that’s a problem because there’s different fan theories on stuff that people can confuse to be canon. Like the exorcist are either created by Adam (maybe from his ribs) or they are humans who became exorcist.
I actually really like these designs, I love that not eveyone is matching the same color, they give off their own style
I'm glad you brought up the issues with Vaggie. She doesn't really have any personality beyond being Charlie's partner and that can be a weak point on fleshing out a character. I think one of the best ways to know if you made a good character is trying to describe their personality without mentioning any other characters.

Vaggie does she’s a protective but cowerdly person when is actual danger she’s so protective because she knew she couldn’t be killed but when she went to heaven where her secret could get exposed and when she met carmilla she was scared she believes she needs to be useful because Charlie took her in

I relate to how you feel! I was an early Vivzie fan but when I had criticisms about her products (Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss), I felt like I couldn’t share them because of how horrible other fans were to people who had different opinions :/

While I personally did not like Lavenders original redesign, by no means do I think she deserved having people publically bash her.
I love how lavender changed Husk into looking more like a dog since Alastor is said to not care for dogs to much so it would be really funny to think about in my opinion considering Al owns Husks soul.

Now THIS is the classical lavendertowne designs we all know and love. I knew something was up when you did the previous redesigns, as they didn't have the charm you often put into your art at all, as admittedly, it felt way more lazy in contrast to the usual effort you put in. I'm so glad that you're now doing fine, and love your new re-redesigns of the characters!

I saw someone discussing the drama surrounding the original redesigns and when I saw them I was SHOCKED. I hadn't watched a LavenderTowne video in a while but that was not the design quality I remembered. I'm glad she redid them! They look a lot better now.
That's really true, but I still think that she is allowed to have off days. As an artist you can't always be at your best and that's fine. I wouldn't call it lazy per se, although I know what you mean. These desings are so beautiful but the backlash she got for the old ones was foul.
@@lorelei7889 Absolutely. It was harsh, though to give benefit of the doubt, some of the fans' criticisms and reasons were understandable. With that said, it was mostly quite negative, which, unfortunately, as Lavender has said near the end of this video, affected her view over the fandom in general.
Hi Lavender! Not trying to critique your design on Husk in any way but demons can infact have wings! Valentino (although I hate to mention him), does have wings aswell and they don't always point to an angel or ex-exorcist of some sort. I think the reason he was made a cat was to show that hes on Alastor's leash and stuff and that he was seen as a pet. Dogs are also pets but cats are more laidback yet sometimes hostile and affectionate which reflects Husk's personality aswell. Again, not trying to critique your design, just wanted to put it out there! I love both designs of Husk :)
But cats aren’t know for having leashes and he’s name is husk so when you look at him you think of husky’s. Plus I heard in the comments Alastor hates dogs so it be ironic that he has someone who looks like a dog under Alastor’s control.
@@dante_0962 True, but cats who can't guide themselves properly are usually on leashes which could hint at that reference. Plus, Husk would not be his original name as many sinners give themselves,or others, new names as a demon so perhaps he wanted to strive to be a Husky so named himself that way. Also Husk is a nickname for his name Husker which also sounds like whisker, which could be seen in a cat way or booze way. Again, I'm not trying to critique designs just trying to give my opinions and theories on his appearance.
Valentino is a moth though, so the wings make sense as do his extra pair of arms. Husk is a cat, and I think the only sinner demon we have seen who has features of two animals. The leash part is cool, but I think it is an interpretation.
I do agree on the personality though, it does fit a cat very well. Perhaps a bigger, more severe looking cat would have worked. I also think maybe a dog for a sinner would not work on this universe because we also have Hellhounds, who are hell-born. It would be kind of confusing - or it would have to be a huge plot point for him, changing his whole character's story. So cat is fine with me. Love Lavender's design though, personality and clothing wise. I do wish the show leaned harder on each character's era.
@@AuroraDeLirio I always thought Husk was designed after a sphinx like half cat, half human usually drawn with wings 🤔 but I've never saw anyone mention this so it's just my take on his design ahahah.

Edit: Also- I love the designs! I think Husk and Vaggie are my two favorite redesigns. When you go back and do redesigns it really shows how much research they actually put into the show.

These are great redesigns. Your point about a casual viewer not picking up on all the things a hardcore fan would is so true. As someone who just watched it casually, I had no idea about almost any of the time period or animal influences, especially Alastor’s, and I had no idea Angel was supposed to be a spider.
That's why I love critics of Hazbin. I enjoyed the show and I can truly appreciate the effort and love put into it, but many of the critisisms make sense. All the random characters were fun for those of us who know where they come from, but for others they just show up for no reason. I was excited to see Mimzy but she truly served almost zero purpose. Sometimes I am unsure if Viv has ever heard of "kill your darlings" 😂
I have been a fan for quite a while and i realized the same issue with the designs when i got my friend into hazbin as i did not know how to tell her all the random info that made the little details pop, at the end i just answer when she had questions

I've been a fan of Hazbin since Viv was still making Zoophobia. I hate that people in this fandom are so closed-minded. I absolutely agree with your critiques of several of the Hazbin Hotel character designs, especially Alastor's hair and Husk's wings. Ultimately, they're Viv's characters, so she gets to design them how she wants, but it's always really cool hearing about how other people would do things differently and why.
As a pretty big Hazbin fan, here’s my unnecessarily long and unasked for take on your redesigns, in order of the end line up!
Husk: Honestly, I love what you did. In this version he looks so much more… gruff, if that’s the right word, and more like his personality on paper. I also feel like the sweater does a great job at symbolizing that yeah, he’s rude, but he does have that softie side to him. I love both your version and canon husk.
Vaggie: Honestly… I think I like this version more than the canon. To me this fits her a lot more. Love the hair a lot, as well. Doing a knight theme actually goes really well with her dating Charlie as well, considering Vaggie is often trying to protect Charlie like a knight protects their kingdom/royals!
Charlie: First off, shorter Charlie (she looks short in the lineup) is adorable. Intentional or not I feel it adds to the fact nobody takes her seriously. The more princess-y vibe to her is very fitting too. You can’t convince me she wouldn’t wear puffy sleeves lol. Not to mention the innocent wide eyes! Though something about her suit in the canon… can’t explain why I like it, but as I stated and shall restate, I like both your version and the canon!
Alastor: So… I love it. Absolutely love it. Alastor is probably my favorite character out of everyone here (Charlie and Husk are close seconds) and my second favorite redesign. It looks like he’s straight from his era, and a charming businessman ready to make a deal. Not even talking about his facial expression, it somehow looks both unnerving and welcoming. The freckles are so cool as well! Kinda makes me think of how fawns and doe (? Correct me if I’m wrong on that) have white spots on their backs. This is how I’ve kinda pictured Alastor would look as a human, actually (minus the antlers and ears obviously lol). I feel the more sleek/trimmed hair adds to that “gentleman radio host” vibe.

also lucifer is short so they can be a short father-daughter duo! (lilith's genes did absolutely nothing unless we decide to make her short too which would then just make them a feral gremlins family.)

As much as I like Hazbin, I always felt that the character designs were a biproduct of Vivian’s interests.
Judging by the main cast, she really likes putting her characters in suits and loves the color red to the point of it being a detail in almost every character we see in the show.
Funnily enough, I found myself almost running into this issue when designing the characters for my comic series, but I understood that if every character looked the same or had similar motifs, it would kill their uniqueness in personality and theming.
i think that the color con be understand better if someone watch helluva boss first, it's a spin-off of hh and explore the world buildintg better
If you watch helluva boss you'll explore other rings of hell in the universe, each one has a different color scheme, greed being greed for example. Pride, where hazbin hotel takes place, is red. It's also possible that the colors of the rings tie into the chain colors, like how Husk's is green like the sin of greed. That's just a theory though
@@pastelgoth9885 As she pointed out in this video, that's just a retroactive explanation to justify the extreme overuse of red. Even if you want to theme a place after a single colour, there's a billion different shades, hues, and saturations you can use to make things varied and have the characters stand out.
Sorry, these are Vivziepop characters, so she can design them in any way she wants without needing to accomodate them to the tastes of pretententious guys that only knows to complain like you. There's to much red in the show? Yeah, but who cares? If the creator wanted to make the show that way because that's her personal and artistic vision and we should just simply accept that instead of complaining all day non-stop on the internet.

Omgggg, just finished and I have got to say, I abosutley adore how you did alastor, just everything about him, and charlies little horn crown is adorable
For me personally, I think that Alastor’s deer ears looking more like a fox’s ears has amazing potential to be a good way to read the character.
When the pilot first came out a lot of people thought it was intentional that he hid his deer aspects and the only confirmation of him being a deer was from looking at his tap shoes (rip deer track tap shoes!) it gave a “Wolf in sheep’s clothing” kinda theme! Really wish Viv would’ve kept things in the pilot like the show but ya know, game and pressure changes people- and people change in general.
That does seem like a really cool idea, but it does seem like more retroactive justification for the design choices like Lavender "talks" (puts text on screen) about in the video.

I hadn't watched the first video you put up, but i really respect that you owned up to making a mistake and took down your previous video. i think the tone you took for this video both on refusing to use another artists stolen work and trying to fairly criticize hazbin hotel does a really good job of showing respect to your fellow artists.
i am a bit fond of some of the stranger design choices in hazbin i totally agree that a lot of them dont really make sense based on the characters and its visually jarring, so i think your redesigns are awesome. id love another video redesigning some of the other characters, particularity angel dust!

@@blueberrae. I mean, if you notice, she only leans into the whole military thing when Charlie is removed from the equation. All she knew before was military and the beginnings of mercy. After being punished for that mercy, she met Charlie, so it's not surprising she kind of imprinted.
I honestly think, since her intent was to hide her past, she would not wear any sort of military-esque clothes in the beginning, but after her past is outted and she's more accepted, I could see her leaning more into some more retired military officer-type clothes. Or at least a suit that looks similar to a military uniform, perhaps.
One could even argue, and it would fall in line for her background, that the clothes she wore in season 1 were picked out by Charlie.

I think the reason hazbin hotel has such an aggressive and mean fanbase is because Vivziepop has had an extremely long Internet history and many fans have followed her so long or gone back into her past Internet history they've developed this really specific type of parasocial relationship with her and her work?? Especially since her herself also tends to get carried away defending herself like crazy, especially on twitter. I do think this has also been caused because even before the full show came out theres been a rabid large community of what i call a hate fandom ripping into every thing she's made. She started growing a following on deviantart first which no offence to deviantart but..definitely explains alot to me.
It sucks both fans AND people who dislike the hellaverse are so equally toxic and aggressive, even the show creator herself sometimes getting involved, it can definitely make a bad impression on the show and how (TW: OPINIONS) Great it actually is!! Especially since its boosting the indie animation community like crazy. All i hope is everyone settles down, things are cleared up and that Vivzie gets a godamn pr team and possibly some therapy 😭

I mean, i like them but i think vaggie could be worked on since the show encircles the hotel, i'd like to see her in some form of work attire for her job in the hotel, could put her in a bouncer, manager, bellhop, basically something that you'd see someone in while working in the hotel. With husker, i'd like to see something that more stands out for husker, maybe add to the fur color or something that'll help him stand out a bit more since in lavender's drawing it feels like he needs something.. maybe he could have a scar or scratch on him or maybe give him the hat back since his head looks so bare without it.

I'm so glad that you pointed out how old fans interact with new fans. As someone who has been following the show for a long time I know a lot about the hidden lore and I always found myself explaining things to my friends that I thought were common knowledge but in reality were just things that newcomers wouldn't know about after diving head first into the show, there needs to be a separation between what is said in live streams and on social media and what is put in the show, especially when interacting on a wiki space

I am so sorry about the backlash you got. You’re a very mature, kind-hearted creator and you handled the situation so well. Glad you’re doing better! I absolutely love your Husk redesign, to the point I prefer it over the canon design.
