This is the original version of Jet Airliner. The song was made famous by Steve Miller Band after he received an unreleased copy of Paul's album New Train.
Due to problems with famous manager Albert Grossman, Paul Pena's phenomenal album New Train didn't get released for almost 30 years. It's a truly amazing work of art.
While Steve Millers version is fantastic and a great cover, Paul's original version is out of this world. It's a very deep and heartfelt song. Paul, who was completely blind by the age of 20, sings of his experience on an airplane trip from Boston to Montreal to play the first-ever date with T-Bone Walker's band.
Most of Paul's income came from the royalties for writing this great song. He later was the focal point of the award winning documentary "Genghis Blues."
Sadly, Paul passed away in 2005 after a long bout with Pancreatitis.
I highly suggest everyone pick up a copy of New Train if you can.

+badnewsbarnett WE WHO LOVE MUSIC appreciate your presentation of this classic ROCK N ROLL gem from the original genius who provided the soulful melody. The version most of us came to know and love from AOR (album oriented radio) of the 70's by The Steve Miller Band is still moving, discovering the character of Paul Pena the original composer brings that love of music to a much deeper, broader and higher level of humanity. In fact it was a desire to reminisce about my own 70's Rock exploration and reconfigure the lyrical interpretation of past hearing with present knowledge that led me to YT for the SMB version, when I discovered your vid, several years ago.
IT IS ONLY NATURAL THAT ANY CHILD EXPOSED TO SUCH SOULFUL AND MELODIC SINGING WILL ASSUREDLY RESPOND IN THEIR OWN INNOCENT
"BOOGIE" moreso by seeing the tacit approval of their significant other, mother, father, brother, sister enjoying the music as well.

Cryptic or curios as this may sound, I just discerned a connection between the LOVE OF SUCH MUSIC that compels our heart and soul to higher, ethereal aspirations that refuses hate and the collective development of the personal computer industry from the brain trust of like minded spirits percolating out of the HOMEBREW COMPUTER CLUB in the Bay Area. of the early 70's a time that witnessed the rising peaks of collaborative ingenuity of programming code and hardware technology that was frequently developed and perfected within a mental matrix background of music. The FREE THINKING embodied in such music reflects a creative element that acted as a cognitive catalyst among the socially rarefied atmosphere of computer code pioneers of that early era.Today, 40 plus years going forward, It is a challenge to even imagine the inventive audacity of those who accurately aimed to change the world with "PERSONAL COMPUTER" technology for the good of all mankind and did !
Furthermore, IMHO, the fertile and free exchange of problem solving ideas in creating code and hardware devices was perhaps influenced by one of the most enduring and prominent bands associated with the Bay Area, THE GRATEFUL DEAD who encouraged the free recording and exchange of their live concert "tapes." as part of a vibrant cultural ethos, where money and materialism were mere fringe elements to the goal of making live music for lovers to dance.....

    • @IBEYEBALLINU2
      @IBEYEBALLINU2 8 лет назад +1

OH YEAH ! The above seemingly non sequitur thought evidently arose from the knowledge that PAUL PENA composed this classic rock song with the lyrics, " Somebody is trying to make me hate, you know I got to keep moving on ...... BIG OL JET AIRLINER " which I embraced as an inner city teen listening and loving the lyrical content of most Rock and Roll and still "living and loving" through the decades to discover that many of my favorite songs were first composed by music immortals of my own background, who chose to LOVE AMERICA, despite the hardships and hypocrisy endured throughout the American South.. This discovery lead to an existential epiphany signified by the lyrics of that little band from TEXAS, ZZ TOP, "Took a drive through Mississippi , MUDDY WATER turned to wine !"
SUCH MANIFEST GRACE IS THE MARK OF CREATIVE GENIUS.
Such imbibing of salubrious. and plentiful abundant inventive and intellectual "HOMEBREW" lead to such technological inventions as this mobile phone that allows me to hear an alert of a RUclips response of a post I had made months ago and be able to give an immediate response because such music is so significant, SO SIGNIFICANT to my sense of self.
A self that still embraces the ideals of LOVE and banishes HATE to HELL with the rappers who indulge in its degradation of all that is GOOD, like CLASSIC ROCK AND ROLL !!!!!!!!!!

There was some conflict between Paul Pena mgr & Bob Dylan Mgr about releasing the song. I think it over some word or words so Dylan blocked him from being able to release it. So Pena gave it to the Steve Miller who made some changes & they released it. Paul Pena was given royalties to help him along in life. It seemed that he was sick or something. So it's not an exact copy. But at least he was able to get money to live off of.

Paul was one of the sweetest people I ever met. When I was a little kid my mom used to bring him meals, this is when he was sick and just a couple years away from death. The first time I met him, I was kind of terrified because I had never seen a really really sick person before, and he was so thin, so different from how he looked in the movie. Paul coaxed me to come closer and say hello in his wonderful gravelly voice-- "You're not in hell, kid," were his exact words. But he said it so kindly, so warmly, it just put me at ease right away. He was such a beautiful soul, and an incredible talent.

PAUL PENA...years ago, the first time I saw him in the "Ghengis Blues" film... I really was set on fire, when I heard his unbelievable great voice!!! For me PAUL PENA was one of the greates voices of the last century...if HE would have had a little bit more luck with the presentations of his LP's, I am SURE, he would have made the way UP to the TOP! and: he would have given us A LOT MORE of his fantastic musical works! 'was very happy, when I found out, that Capitol Rec. offers his very hard to find first records as MP3-downloads, a really true DIAMOND!(Vinyl-LP "Paul Pena,1972) I was very sad, when a Frisco guy told me, that there is no grave, Paul can't be visited....surely he is at home with his family. R.I.P. Paul.....for me you were ONE OF THE GREATEST ! ! ! Your place is right beside ELVIS, FREDDIE M., Joe Cocker and a lot of more immortal voices of the last century! Also sad to hear, that Kongar-Ol Ondar left us 2 years ago!! I think, now they kargyraa together in heaven !.....

99% of the time the original version is best. Naturally, it springs forth from the heart and mind of the creating artist. Everything after that is a derivative interpretation of another's art. In seat forty-two, just about to go insane
    I've been down before
Riding along in this big jet plane
I've been thinking about jumping out the door
'Cause my homeland is so far away
And I feel like it's all been done
Somebody's trying to make me stay
And I've got to be on the run
    Oh, big old jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
    Oh, big old jet airliner
'Cause it's here that I've got to stay
I've been sitting by the fireside
Wondering where my strength is going
Looking through the mirror of life
Trying to find out which way the wind's blowing
But my heart keeps pushing me backwards
As I jump aboard that 747
Riding high, but with a tear in my eye
You got to go through hell before you get to heaven
    Woah, big old jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
    Ooh, big old jet airliner
'Cause it's here that I've got to stay
    Oh, I know I will
I'm gonna leave on my own this time
    Big old jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
    Big old jet airliner
Here that I've got to stay
    Touching down in New England
    Feel the heat coming down
First thought is "Lord, I said I'd be there"
But I couldn't seem to quite get it down
'Cause I'm going with some hesitation
I've got to go and make my way
But there's so many people, Lord, to talk to
And a whole lot of debts to pay
    Oh, big old jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
    Oh, big old jet airliner
'Cause it's here that I've got to stay
Goodbye to old friends at home
Goodbye to willing friends I've trusted
I've got to go out and make my way
I might get rich and I might get busted
But I'm going, Lord, with so many things to clean up
I've got to make my way clear before me
But I don't want to get mixed up
In any of that funky shit that's going down before me
    Ooh, big old jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
    Big old jet airliner
'Cause it's here that I've got to stay
They're trying to pull me away
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Big old jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
    Big old jet airliner
'Cause it's California where I've got to stay
    Ooh, big old jet airliner

After a year this suddenly appears in my feed again.
So please let us clearly my definition of "Robbed", as there seems to be some confusion.
That remark had absolutely nothing to do with his Royalties, or the Fine-Print in the Credits for the compositional work.
When I say robbed I meant the apparent lack of respect to the Artist by the Label for presumably not promoting him better, or worse still deciding to drop him.
Still knowing more about him, and his life I'm happy that he still managed to not give up on being a musician. Something of a dying breed these days. With all the AI Synth-pop crap that passes for "Music" today. Sure real music can still be found, but not on Radio, and depending on your tastes on YT either unless you hit the Lottery equivalent of luck with that.
