Congrats on 20 years, Dan! My lovely wife and I hit 20 years' wedding anniversary this September!
“There’s no such thing as a free….crunch”. Effin’ epic!!! Next t-shirt…
I literally just pulled my car over to say the same thing.... I Need this shirt!
Yes a shirt indeed!
(Though I’m still waiting for a “No Reverb, No Happy” shirt to drop…🙏🏻)
Yep. That was geniuos
I'm with you Mick; critical thinking, social competence, how to criticize constructively, basic debate skills, basic respect and politeness seem to have evaporated over the past decades. I'm fascinated by the Oxford Inklings because they were all over the place in their religious and political beliefs, yet they were all friends, would meet and debate on the regular. Thing is with the nature of social media, annoying attitudes aren't going anywhere, so all one can do is manage our own responses to it. The struggle is real.
Hi D&M ! So look forward to VCQ each week. When Mick was talking about the negativity train earlier I remembered an old Gladys Knight and the Pips tune. Friendship Train. Pulled it up and gave it a listen. What a relevant song for todays world . Give it a listen its up lifting! Love you both. Rock On!
Thank you Jeffry!
What a crazy and lovely fuzzed out guitar tone!! 😅
@@fabianericson5454 Isnt it? Love it too. Have a great day !
The shpling shpling delay overdrive explanation just made my day :)
Keep on keeping on doing what you do in the way that you do it, it’s why we love the show so much.
The haters will keep hating no matter what and they’ll have karma (probably instant) to deal with as a consequence.
Don’t mind them and carry on shining your light on to the world of guitars, amps and pedals.
Big Love to the TPS crew and community 🙏🏻💜✨
Big love right back. Thank you!
I still remember Mick’s fantastic playing from doing that Jimi Hendrix project a few years back spilling over onto that pedal show. All your practice had you in excellent shape to tickle my ears with that sweet Jimi tone I love.
Watching this late because I was away from home visiting near TPS towers, specifically I was having tea with a retired archdeacon in Bradford on Avon, just sharing to let you know the kind of rock&roll life TPS fans lead 👍
"...Weight of that, minus the pigeon" 1:51:10 onwards.
Thanks Mick, that got a big chortle from me. Love your work.
Love you both, thanks for everything. Really a great discussion. ❤
29:20 “no such thing as a free crunch” - Dan brilliance. If only we could all make ourselves that happy!😂😂
Simply adorable
Great show as always!
Mick: compare all the positive comments to all the negative ones and I think the ratio is very very very very small. So crack on and don’t give any energy to the negative stuff. I love what you guys do. The information is gold!
I know I know I know. Thank you. It’s crazy to be bothered by it. Literally insane.
Set my strat up Carl/Monty style, allows you to pull up for intonated notes, semi tone, tone, minor third on high E,B and G strings respectively, awesome, also find I don’t need to you the bar after using it, it’s just in tune.
Me too. Works a treat and stays in tune as long as strings are well stretched and the other friction points are properly sorted.
Mick, I'm with you. I swore I'd never get a cell phone, and now its indispensable. But never works correctly.
Hello Lads! On the subject of attenuators, I tried the Tone King Iron Man II Mini with my '90's Deluxe Reverb. My DR doesn't come alive until I hit 3 on the volume but my bandmates sometimes complain it;'s too loud. The Iron Man helped with overall volume but I found it not only adversely affected the tone but severely changed the gain structure of my setup. Gone were any nice cleans or edge of breakup with my Kingsley Page. I adjusted all gain staging on my G3's pre-gain as well as the gain levels on all pedals but to no avail. What's more, hitting my DryBell Unit 67 for solo boosts no longer sends me into soaring lead tone but rather hits a brick wall, sending my time based effects into chaos. I returned the Iron Man and further adjusted my gain levels and while I sometimes must try and mitigate my overall volume with baffles, I am much happier as my tone is back. The lesson? No to attenuators and methinks I need a high headroom clean amp such as the Victory V140 or The Mesa Boogie Fillmore 100.
Thanks as always for your wonderful guidance and inspiration!
Darin
Regarding the comments about not covering certain points don’t be too hard on yourself Mick! What I loved about HRD vid and other recent videos is that they are very naturally presented. If you have to please everybody you inevitably overthink things and likely ruin the flow of what you guys have developed over the years. Keep doing what you’re doing please.
I agree.
If Mick has to pause to consider the possible needs of 358k + viewers before speaking, Dan will need to start strumming “on hold” music.
To Mick and Dan, don’t change a thing gents but if you feel you need to add to a video… we’re watching with appreciation 🧡
I concur!

Mick, try a Motorolla, I used them for years, each one lasting 3-5 years then tried a "Pro" Samsung, 6 months later I had a new Motorolla. They're not flashy, but they work. Unsung underdogs of the phone world
I'm begging, please, add time stamps after the show wraps up!
I know that there is something of interest in there I want to see/hear but I just can't give up two or three full hours every week to find all of those nuggets.
Dan: "Welcome to that Pedal Show VCQ ... Mick's on the wonder knobs" Me: "I wonder what the settings are ...?"
Would be awesome to see an overdrive episode for each pickup type. So Strat pickups and all different levels of OD, then humbuckers episode with all the different levels of OD, then P90 episode with all different levels of OD, etc. etc.
Thanks for the upload, lads! Phillip Sayce would be an amazing interview, I hope it goes through as well
Mick: Love your rant, I'm right there with you. If you're into the Stoics, look up Cleanthes. I think you'd dig his way of being.
Lap steel! Jesse Aycock,Tulsa OK player (a bunch of videos on my channel with Jesse). Great guy and when Derek Trucks comes to town, calls him up! Jesse is a wonderful human and amazing lap steel player! 🤘
Mick, you're right on VHT, by the way - that was Steve Fryette's company for a long time, produced his famous 2/50/2 and 2/90/2 power amps, along with great amps like the Memphis, Pittbull (extra T intentional), and Sig:X. Then, for reasons even Steve admits he doesn't totally understand, a Japanese consortium offered him an enormous amount of money for the name VHT, not the designs, so he sold it and now makes the same stuff as simply Fryette. (He's also revived Sound City and gotten Fane to make both period-correct c.1970 speakers and some new designs for Fryette amps like the Deliverance. His Hiwatt knowledge is astonishing - perhaps a good guy to as about yours!)
Gotta start watching this everyday new fella here y'all.
I believe EHX have confirmed on one of their social media pages that the internals of the Andy Summers flanger are the same as the Deluxe Electric Mistress XO that they’ve just discontinued. Same internals, different casing!
My only use for a mobile phone is as a handheld computer. I don’t make calls on it and texting has completely passed me by. Maybe I’m just a hermit !
I know it isn’t exactly your wheel house but a deep dive on effect loops would be greatly appreciated I use my loop all the time but I have a million questions and I can think of anyone I’d trust more to walk me through it
I think we’ve done it in the past. Trouble is, they all vary so much, we’d have to do three deep dives to even scratch the surface.
@@ThatPedalShow it is of course your channel and your content is at your discretion, and I love your stuff so I’ll keep watching regardless but. I find the idea that you can’t cover effect loops because it would take several videos a little unconvincing. How many videos have you done about delay? Or reverb? Or gain stacking? I’d like to lobby again for the content covering effect loops, you are well with in your rights to never do it, again it’s your channel and again I’m a fan but if you don’t please don’t say it’s coz it would take a lot of videos when you know you have to brain storm for video content all the time
Mick, on the question of FX loop positions relative to master volumes - there have been quite a few Mesa/Boogies that have an individual Master for each channel, which also serves as the loop send level, and then either a loop return volume or a global master afterward (usually called Output on the Triple Crown, various Rectifiers, et al). That's how I used to run my Lone Star, cos I thought the drive channel sounded much better with the master up - I'd crank the channel, jump the loop with a patch cable, and use the Output to set the final volume. Doing the same thing with a Bogner Ecstasy 3534 right now, for the same reason, and it's working great. (And if the loop has its own Send gain control, you can jump it and crank the Send up as an extra gain stage.)
All of which is to say: you can do all kinds of great stuff with FX loops, as long as you don't put pedals in them!
Hahaha! This is awesome! Yes, I long fought with the Lonestar FX loop, eventually just bowing to never using it. But your experience/suggestion makes a lot of sense! Cheers!
In honor of the new Andy Summers Flange, a deep dive on his legendary Cornish board and effect on music in the late 70s/80s would sure be nice. I think people think the Edge started all of that these days.
Deleterious. I saw Mick's reaction to the new use of the word.
Musing around at my mindless tedium today, I could suddenly hear Noel Gallagher's voice going ...
...I got 'tis new word from Johnny Marr.
Deleterious.
He wanted to put into a Smiths song,, but he gave it to me along with this old Strat I don't know what to do with, cause it's such a tiny little thing. It's been in the case for about 30 years now.
Anyways, I used to say detrimental, but deleterious is more melodic, like
Nooo, He's not getting that one back
Hahahahah!
@@ThatPedalShow I chose to omit the expletives for obvious reasons, though it would have added to the sauce.
Insert them at your will
Up the Oils' riffs Dan!

Sorry, guys!
My fault!! Your comments on my reaction yesterday are true...
I should have listened better before start writing any comment.

What kind of tele is Dan holding early in the video. It’s beautiful.
Hi guys. Would like to participate in your live stream, but don’t see on your channel or website, the precise time on Monday’s? I am in New York. Thanks.
I'm not at all surprised you two sound very different with the same gear. If you gave the same stick of charcoal to two people - their drawings would be totally different, the line quality, the pressure, the choices, the flow. It's what makes it worth doing.
9:28 I am seriously considering sending Mick some coconuts….
(But then my brain begins to sing 🎶 I’ve got a loverly bunch of Coconuts 🥥 🎶 “ and it all goes downhill from there)
People should not be having trouble with getting a good overdrive on a Strat or Les Paul.Something's up if you have these guitars, amps and pedals and then decrying this problem.
Also, regarding compressors. The EHX Tone Corset is a great 'budget' one, with Blend.
RE: Phones: Mick, I feel your pain. I LITERALLY make my entire living via my phone AND I live in Los Angeles...which only happens to be the media capital of the known human Universe for...mmmm...about a FLIPPING CENTURY and I have constant problems, even when I have all bars showing.
I regularly want to throw my phone.
the best guitar amp is a neglected bass amp.
Gah!! "Nutflax" = thermo-nuclear brain worm!! You guys are awesome.
6:00 even way back before i got my first iphone (2010?) a friend told me about thjs great app that made her iphone behave like a dumbphone. Sadly by the time i wanted it, it was no longer on the app store. Plus ça change…
What is that guitar Dan is playing?
Since you talked about volume leveling on dry and wet effects, wouldn't you think it is time to make a video about expression and volume ( Hi and Lo impedance) pedals, I'm just saying😁
Good show, fellas. What guitar is Dan holding in his lap? Thanks
Switzerland isn't in the EU (or the EEA for that matter)
1:00:42 to 1:01:10 preach man! 😂
1:11;00 don’t you ever change, boys.
I wasn’t able to catch the show live this week, but it was a fun show. I look forward to it every week. About the negative internet comments, sometimes it helps to read the comment with a different voice in your head. Read negative comments with the voice of say SpongeBob SquarePants in your head. It makes them hilarious and easy to let them fall off like water off a duck’s back.
Haha! 97.6 per cent of the time, I find some empathy for the ignorance and lack of community spirit. These people who are full of bile obviously have a lot of suffering in their lives. And then 2.4 per cent of the time is an outpouring of my own suffering and pain body.
The thing is, it’s all the same suffering and it’s attracted to itself. That’s why the internet is simultaneously so powerful and so destructive. Problem at the moment is that the majority of people on the globe are unconsciously identified with their minds, and suffering. Ergo, massive amplification of psychological time and therefore human suffering. We’d genuinely be better without social media at this point. Another 50 years, maybe the pendulum swings.
It’s hard because you both are public figures. But remember your show provides education, entertainment and real joy for many of us. That’s the real value of social media. I try to remember to just try and make people smile and give them a good laugh at times. Keep up the good work! Love the show.
1:02:00 Zen Mick has charming “werewolf, not swearwolf” vibes.
2:13:00 tap the gong very lightly.
31:00 cedilla. My baby drove up in a brand new one.
Dan, have you thought about getting a dumb phone? I used one for about three years and it was great. Emails on computer, route planning in advance etc. I only went back to a smart phone so I could track my hikes.
I can hear Dan from here. No. Way. Might work for me, but Dan and phone are one. Ha!
@@ThatPedalShowGah! Mick of course. They’re also really cheap so easy to try one out for a month to see how you get on. I must admit, I’m now using my smart phone too much again. I think the best compromise is leaving it at home every now and then, or sticking it in a drawer if you are at home. Anyway - loving the show as always!
No such thing as a free crunch !, should be a T Shirt
Mick, studying philosophy definitely helps in critical thinking because that is exactly what you are taught, including logics (which is one of the curricular courses). However, I do think that - at least in my university days - the focus was more on abstract topics, more focused on offering views on the world or society, perhaps more holistic. As far as I understand psychology (through therapy), it is much more based on certain models that might explain certain behaviour. I think that what you mean by critical thinking is mostly a cross over between the two. Philosophy, but much more personalised and focus on your individual self (as opposed to trying understand the world).
furthermore, allowing your emotions on many folks on the interwebs commenting badly after missing your point, that's just being human. Don't beat yourself up over it because that part, you can control.
Thank you for this. I did some undergraduate models in philosophy and psychology and I’ve read quite a bit in both areas since then - blimey - coming up 30 years ago.
What I mean by critical thinking isn’t really informed by any specific psychological or philosophical school. It’s above both in the hard drive, so to speak- it’s what bonds rather than separates. Take Freudian psychology for example - totally taken to pieces if you don’t accept determinism (the evidence for which is all around). Adherence to any psychology or philosophy requires one to accept its assumptions and choose to believe it. I rather hope that critical thinking means an giant alarm bell goes off every time we choose to believe anything, instead of actually knowing something. And yet, here we are in a world where people choose to believe all kinds of things with great violence and anger, without ever doing the work to actually know, because they would rather the life lie of being ‘right’ than the possibility of being wrong.
What those disciplines - and all worthwhile learning - do, is act as a signpost to How To Think, rather than have any certainly on What To Think.
So I guess it’s some coming together of logic, of understanding motivated cognition, and a constant desire to use the mind to enable conscious presence and not allow the mind to identify with ego. Humans are still evolving. History says we’re very slowly getting very marginally less dumb as a species. The internet feels like maybe a catalyst to change by systematically laying out just how colossally unconsciously dumb most humans are. Its a great opportunity to wake up, if only we could choose to believe less, and endeavour to simply accept what is. Erm, that’s about it I think!
@@ThatPedalShow How to think vs What to think is possibly my main take away from that whole study philosophy. So many schools of thoughts as you mention and they may be relevant to learn. But the main take away from it is shaping the way you are able to think about stuff. And, many schools of thoughts believe a lot more, and know a lot less than they think. Like with Descartes. Okay what do we really know?? "I know that there's an entity (I) questioning what I know". Ok good, next step: "GOD! there must be a God".
All that is to say - What you regularly bring up on TPS (and please do make a podcast about this topic) is very much what I feel philosophy *should* be. And I thank you for it because I can't deny it helps my stance in life, a lot.
Thank you! I’d love to talk about it more. We should get some expert guests in!
can i put a treble bleed on the little black box?
Mick, what was the reference at 2:02:50 you made to testing/setting up vibratos; Darren-something?
Darren Braun. Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow Aah, Darrell Braun, good channel. Cheers.
If Ethan Johns doesn’t pump the Friday vids through a fairly decent setup I’d eat my hat
Maybe have a Kit Kat bar & be silly 😜
Damn i missed it again, I’m curious on their opinion on treble bleed and neck pickup always on mod on strats
Hello! Treble bleed no. Neck pickup disconnected tone control, yes. Neck pickup always on, no. Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow thanx for the reply, I’m replacing pots for slower taper ones and figured I’d get push pull, keep the mods switchable and separate, also I apologize if it’s sacrilegious but i hate the volume knob being that close so I’m going to 2 pots and putting a mini kill switch button in it’s place, it’s my first strat so I’m going down the rabbit hole of mods and upgrades
“The Wonder Knobs”, new band name… please tell me you’re making a wet/dry/wet video with those two beasts behind you today!?
Mick, the point of fiction is that everything you can imagine is real. The sociologists say a similar thing like every social action, be it imaginated or real, is real in its consequences
It’s not real. It identification with thought and form. But I agree about the consequences part.
Hey lads! Here's a pedal challenge idea: rainbow pedal board. Must build a pedal board comprised of 6 pedals, one for each color of the rainbow. Color can either be in the name of the pedal or the physical color of the housing. No restrictions on order of pedals or type of pedals. Bonus points for pedals you've personally never played before.

I've long thought that Mick and I share political views ;)
Re Critical Thinking - Some knowledge of history also helps... or we're doomed to repeat it (we are. BIG TIME).
Referring to the surprises of who watches the show, I heard John Mayer mention on Cory Wong’s podcast that he liked your show and you’d cost him a lot of money. 😆
