Treaty by Treaty, the United States reached across the American continent, often subjecting moral principles and Native wishes to a voracious drive for land. From this birds-eye view, we rarely have the chance to hear the individual Native voices which resounded during this time, seeking to stem the tide and speaking strongly for their people. Focusing in on Portage, Wisconsin’s first-and only-land cession council offers such an opportunity. At this council from October 12-15, 1836, treaty commissioner Henry Dodge sought the Ho-Chunk Nation's remaining Wisconsin land. Wakąhaga's (Waukon Decorah's) response for his Nation prevented a land cession that year. His speech was penned down, preserving one of the many strong voices waiting to be rediscovered within these nation-wide stories.
