THE ONLY NUMBER I WANT TO SEE GOING DOWN IS MY ENEMY'S HEALTH NOT MINE jokes aside the GRU is pretty damn good to get to the front lines if your team doesn't have an engineer. worried about your health being too low when you get there? no problem, just put them away halfway there.
what do you think the game would be like if the Heavy had a Counter Strike like movement passive with plus 8% movement speed for 77% plus 8% for 85% movement speed when your minigun is holstered?
Everyone knows that the KGB, the Killing Gloves of Boxing is a pun for the Soviet intelligence and secret police force, the KGB. What they don't know is that the GRU is the name of the modern Russian intelligence network. Valve put lots of little jokes into this game that mostly go over people's heads.
Uncle Dane makes video: I was wrong about the panic attack (makes every engineer start using the panic attack) Big Joey makes a video: I was wrong about the GRU (every heavy starts using the GRU)
I've been using the GRU over the fists of steel ever since the update. It's so good for getting to the front. And the ability to close the gap with melee is surprisingly good. It has come in handy many times.
I tend to favor the GRU when I want to play romer Heavy or when simply we don't have a Medic (and my teammates are too shit to go Medic myself). If we do have have good Medic, I I the KGB and the Steak for rollouts if on offense, or the Sandvitch and FoS on defense.
@@d_inkz it’s ridiculous that with a whip boost the heavy runs at 322 hammer units per second, which is faster than a medic and spy, and moves at 155 hammer units per second while revved up with any minigun other than the brass beast, compared to the usual 111 or so hammer units per second
While I agree that the GRU is better than most of Heavy's melee options, I would not say that the current version is better than the previous version. I think you downplayed the drawback of losing health a bit. It's very significant. The mini crit version was better because you did not lose health, so when you died, you could reach the frontlines quickly. Unless you tried to run at players with your melee out or you tried to use them to escape, the mini crits would not come into affect. The health drawback is always there however, and lasts a little while after too. It regens health at the same rate it subtracts max-health. This means that if you had to run from spawn to the front lines, you could deploy it for half of the way there, and then holster it the other half, and your health would be back at full by the time you get there. By the way, when I say half, I don't mean half distance. I mean half time. Since you travel faster with the gloves drawn, you can cover more ground in less time. Regen is equal to health subtracted in terms of time, not distance traveled. Regardless, the fact that you can only equip it for half of the time that you travel means it doesn't really give you a 30% speed boost. It's basically a 15% speed boost. This doesn't mean that it can't be used as a 30% speed boost though. In fact, it does boost your speed by 30%. But if you take full advantage of the boost, you will enter battle with 100 health, assuming it took you 18 seconds to get there. Also, the thing you said at 4:53 is not really a good idea. Firstly, if you only deploy your GRU, the medic can heal you to 150 hp, because your lowest hp will be 100/100, and a 50% buff from medic makes it 150/100. Now, if you switch on and off, then yeah, you can enter battle with 300 health, BUT remember that switching frequently is discouraged, because every time you deploy the GRU, you lose 20 max health, which takes 2 seconds to regain. 2 seconds sounds like a small time, but think about this. Running 30% faster for 2 seconds gets you nowhere. I think you should have mentioned its usefulness with the Dalokohs Bar. I don't think either the GRU nor the chocolate bar are very good by themselves, and they really aren't super great together, but at least the chocolate can give you some max health that the GRU can't subtract. With the chocolate, you'll have at least 150 max health, instead of 100. This is the same as not using the chocolate, and instead being fully overhealed by a medic, with the GRU out for at least 18 seconds. Also, if you use the chocolate AND have a medic, you can get up to 225/150 health with the GRU out, which is not as bad. Overall, it's a great video for casual players, but it lacks some of the more technical aspects of such a unique weapon with intricate mechanics. If you read this far, thanks so much. I hope this information was helpful. :) (Proof of having read this would also make my day, though I understand if you can't respond to hundreds of comments)
Thats what I was thinking. Specially when he said it was good against vaccinator but in reality is the uber that is the counter not the GRU, even a scout can beat that combo if he had uber on. In all GRU is good ish but is not better then the previous GRU
@@denzellizasuain563 It's not even the Uber that's the counter- it's that you managed to get a teammate to change what they were doing previously. So why waste an Uber on punching them to death when you can just get an explosive class/spy to handle the vac medic?
I've noticed that you end up healing more health from medpacks because of the health drain, so it has it's own benefits as well if you need a bit more health to sponge out more damage.
I found it kinda bullshit of him to say how big the damage penalty removal was. Like yeah you can 2 shot most classes, but good luck getting close to them in the first place. Sniper is sniper. Scout has mobility and has a close range gun that works especially well against characters with fat hitboxes. Engineer has sentry gun, can out run you and has a shotgun that works similarly to scouts. Let’s not forget that you have a minigun as well. Oh and maybe a shotgun.
I’m late, but keep in mind that the weapon gives you a speed boost, meaning you take less time in the first place, which cuts down on your travel time. This means you can go further than half before needing to let your health recharge, due to the different rates of health to distance due to Heavy’s speed change. That is all.
I love how half the people in the chat were like: Is that the real Joey? Naw, can't be! Well, look at his cosmetics! They have an effect! Everyone has one of those. But look at his profile! (Yadda Yadda Yadda.)
I'm glad someone's finally recognized this. The GRU only received a partial nerf in terms of prolonged use but is now MUCH more applicable in utility and combat scenarios.
I feel stupid. I thought the "marked for death" stat was still a thing, thinking that it now not only would cause minicrits against you but also a max health drain. I guess if I would have read more closely when Jungle Inferno first dropped I might have still used The GRU.
Man, Since around last year Halloween I started to main heavy and I've been using the GRU since. One thing I have NEVER seen anyone mention is how the lowered health can actually be really useful. You can spin your weapon switch to lower your health and pick up heal items. When your health returns to normal you get more then you would have gotten from the pack then just running into it without the fast swap. For example, if you got a small health kit you'd normally get 60ish hp, but if you were using the GRU and speed swap your way down to 100 hp max. Suddenly that small health kit just filled more than half your health, Assuming you don't get hit while getting that hp back. This also makes stuff like the chocolate bar more viable, because you can just speed swap then eat it and it'll heal you way more than before plus you get the bonus hp.
Nice work on the video joey, the GRU has become a personal favorite of mine as well. It's a great weapon for the fast paced flank and ambush heavy, which is a very fun playstyle
I haven't used anything else outside of medieval mode for years now. - Great escape tool. - Really good for getting close to sentries and the enemy when ubered. - Useful when combined with the dalokos bar that negates the initial health drain penalty. Used wisely, that's an amazing combo for getting around and getting in position, especially with the Tomislav, which lets you do that even more aggressively.
Getting from 100 to 300 hp takes around 20 seconds, and that's very long. Howewer is you use Dalokosh time goes down from 20 to 7 seconds, which is very good. Just switch to your mini first, or you will lose some health right after your snack pause. And one thing unmentioned in the video, gru health drain scales down with your health left, so you won't lose that much of you're already low, which makes it a great escape item, but most people probably already know that
I've always loved your intro, Joey. Also, love your content! Keep up the great work, mate! Also! I really enjoy using the GRU with the Dalokas Bar. That extra 50hp gives you five extra seconds of speed for basically free!
you think you medic mains get targeted a lot? we heavies die in seconds because everyone tunnel visions us and as soon as we start fighting there’s always one sniper ready to blow our heads off (unless we’re using the chad fists of steel, then we can last just a bit longer against those cheeky snipers ;))
I had an idea for a heavy secondary called “The Siberian Salad” -33% charge time Gain a 30% speed boost on eating and a 20% melee damage bonus for 10 seconds -50% health healed on eat(150 health on eat) +10% damage vulnerability while effect is active Alt fire to share salad with friends! (Small health kit) Hope you like the idea!
Big Joey, you are my favorite TF2 RUclipsr, not only am I a Heavy main aswell, but your content is actually amazing!! I’ve been maining the GRU since jungle inferno! So I’m glad you changed your mind!!
Many people forgets one thing about the GRU: Everytime you switch to it, you lose -20 health. So everytime you switch to it from your other 2 weapons, you lose -20 health faster I thought this could be something People should know about.
You can actually still use the GRU effectively for rollouts as well. As long as you unequip it halfway to the frontline, you'll regenerate back your health, and still be affected by the 30% move speed buff for half of the rollout, which is effectively a 15% speed boost towards rollouts, making your rollout speed on par with the demo (sans sticky jumps).
Ever since coming back to TF2 during Jungle Inferno, the GRU has been my bae. Though, I've never thought about using it for vantage jumps. Thanks for the quality content!
With the scene showing heavy jumping from top left to top right on dustbowl, you can actually use the planks on the wall of the right mine to get to the same place without the need of GRU.
I've found a lot of use for pairing the GRU with the Dalohkos bar, since it easily compensates for the drained health and helps regain it more quickly.
It took you 3 years to realize this?! I and countless heavies(that I have seen) have used it in Highlander for years! When all the balancing came out, I naturally began to try out all the changes for 1 or 2 days each(Or something that feels like that). Even though I only play heavy on last point in 6s.
joey do you know the interaction between gru and chocolate bar? if you use gru to run to the front line then eat it the hp restores your max hp and youll have 350 hp also. i use this along with brass beast or natasha since the max hp increase raises your threshold for when the dmg resistance activates
At first when I saw a health drain mechanic, I didn’t like the idea. Then, when I used one,(The eviction notice, I firmly believe it is viable.) it wasn’t as bad as I thought.
Just as a small point. If you eat the Dalokas bar when your health is depleted even down to 150, it will actually return you to your max hp of 300. The chocolate trying to force that +50 hp might not give you infinite overheal like before but for some reason it makes you recover all that lost health by the GRU
I still will always prefer the Holiday punch because it’s the only multiplayer weapon I’ve ever seen which can pull off having a stun mechanic and not be infuriating to play against.
Reminder that dalokohs bar can heal back lost max health, not just give you 50 max health, all 100 healing that the dalokohs gives, it goes straight into max health
Also, intentional or not, you can essentially nullify the health drain with the dalokohs bar. Just eat the bar while at reduced health and it boosts your health up to 350, no matter what your current max hp is, the difference between your max from the gru and the 350 is overheal while your actual health regenerates back to normal. You pad your health with overheal until your actual health catches up
It's about time, I've been using the GRU since I got them a while ago. I really think they're great because they allow me to get to battle much faster.
I never understood why people dropped them after JI, they're still very useful, you just need to use your brain to make sure you don't arrive at the front line with 150hp :p
No, Big Joey! My surprise GRU charge strat has even revealed to all! You'll be surprised how many players just panic when you pull out the GRU and charge at em swinging. They don't know how to react because SUDDENLY THERE'S A HEAVY IN THEIR FACE! I find it's most useful to duck around a corner first and then re-emerge with the gloves on. They're expecting rev speed, but you're moving at the speed of a pyro or demo. Totally different.
Hey big joey i have an idea for a New heavy item Mini dispenser: the heavy can carry a miny dispenser on his back in exchange for the sandvich slot and he can give healing and ammo to nearby teammates but the heavy wont be able to use his or other dispensers, the enginneer can help refill the heavy's mini dispenser
I think the most interesting fact of the Jungle Inferno's change to the GRU is that they literally just made it the version that was used in VSH/Freak Fortress.
I know it’s pretty niche but the dalokohs bar actually gets regains you back 100 of the health you lost during your rollout, so they make a pretty solid combo

Getting from 100 to 300 hp takes around 20 seconds, and that's very long. Howewer is you use Dalokosh time goes down from 20 to 7 seconds, which is very good. Just switch to your mini first, or you will lose some health right after your snack pause.
And one thing unmentioned in the video, gru health drain scales down with your health left, so you won't lose that much of you're already low, which makes it a great escape item, but most people probably already know that
Regen is as fast as health loss
I've always loved your intro, Joey. Also, love your content! Keep up the great work, mate! Also! I really enjoy using the GRU with the Dalokas Bar. That extra 50hp gives you five extra seconds of speed for basically free!
Don’t mind me, just a medic main wondering what a heavy’s life is like.

you think you medic mains get targeted a lot? we heavies die in seconds because everyone tunnel visions us and as soon as we start fighting there’s always one sniper ready to blow our heads off (unless we’re using the chad fists of steel, then we can last just a bit longer against those cheeky snipers ;))
I had an idea for a heavy secondary called “The Siberian Salad”
-33% charge time
Gain a 30% speed boost on eating
and a 20% melee damage bonus for 10 seconds
-50% health healed on eat(150 health on eat)
+10% damage vulnerability while effect is active
Alt fire to share salad with friends!
(Small health kit)
Hope you like the idea!
Based off of the scout domination line telling heavy to try a salad
last time i was this early tf2 had an update :(
o
Come back at late October, we are sure to have scream fortress soon
@@pootisbirdteamfortress2973 We have the map already!
@@snackermantm105 yup, early
@@pootisbirdteamfortress2973 we have it now
Big Joey, you are my favorite TF2 RUclipsr, not only am I a Heavy main aswell, but your content is actually amazing!!
I’ve been maining the GRU since jungle inferno! So I’m glad you changed your mind!!
Many people forgets one thing about the GRU:
Everytime you switch to it, you lose -20 health. So everytime you switch to it from your other 2 weapons, you lose -20 health faster
I thought this could be something People should know about.
This. This is the main reason I dropped the GRU. The max health drain is only an issue to me since I lose a massive 30 health instantly.
heavy update trailer looking good
Now I see what you meant by get a video out by spooktober
title has the same vibe as "oopsie woopsie! we made a fuckie wuckie!"
Joey, you are an adult.
Those aren't stickers, stickers are for kids.
They are "decal"
What would you call em then?
@@Clarkbardoone ...
Thanks Joey for more great content! Keep 'em coming!
Vaccinator bullet has 10% passive melee resistance.
also, it's worth noting that the dalakohs bar and fishcake can still overheal you to 300 after your health is drained.
Joey why don't you make heavy stereotypes? Weapons , and cosmetics
What is he soundsmith
Da
You can actually still use the GRU effectively for rollouts as well. As long as you unequip it halfway to the frontline, you'll regenerate back your health, and still be affected by the 30% move speed buff for half of the rollout, which is effectively a 15% speed boost towards rollouts, making your rollout speed on par with the demo (sans sticky jumps).
Using the dalokhos bar you can glitch your health to 350 even with the health decrease.
Yo Joey u gonna hit 100k subs in no time! Well deserved if I say! Enjoyed the content, I will stick with ya all the way dude!
Pls Joey change the intro we're in the middle of No Nut November
It’s spooktober not NNN
Ever since coming back to TF2 during Jungle Inferno, the GRU has been my bae. Though, I've never thought about using it for vantage jumps. Thanks for the quality content!
With the scene showing heavy jumping from top left to top right on dustbowl, you can actually use the planks on the wall of the right mine to get to the same place without the need of GRU.
So, in summary...
Gru+ sneak= Spy heavy
Man Big Joey is the man of optimism to me, we could have hell opening up and still find a silver lining in it.
As a person who uses the G.R.U, i completely agree.
Always love to see Joey upload
Welp, time for strange gloves to spike up in price
about a week ago I started using the GRU again and it's honestly so good. Great Video.
That's a lot of Redbull...
I've found a lot of use for pairing the GRU with the Dalohkos bar, since it easily compensates for the drained health and helps regain it more quickly.
“I started playing with the GRU. And I kept playing with the GRU.”
Sounds like me with the Natascha.
yeah I just always played with it, just cuz it slows scouts and demoknights down and ruins their day
@Admiral Mudkip Yeah, lmao. I use it for pissing off trolldiers cause I always get killed by them
@@planterbox If I could only see the soul and happiness get sucked out of them as I vanquish their futile attempts at market gardening me.
Watching those demoknight fail is an absolute win for me
So you guys use the natasha because you don't care about the enemy team having fun?
its been a minute, love ur stuff joey
It took you 3 years to realize this?! I and countless heavies(that I have seen) have used it in Highlander for years!
When all the balancing came out, I naturally began to try out all the changes for 1 or 2 days each(Or something that feels like that). Even though I only play heavy on last point in 6s.
TIL the GRU change was considered a nerf to many heavies, I never stopped using them cause I thought it was a buff O.o
joey do you know the interaction between gru and chocolate bar? if you use gru to run to the front line then eat it the hp restores your max hp and youll have 350 hp also. i use this along with brass beast or natasha since the max hp increase raises your threshold for when the dmg resistance activates
Finally someone noticed the power of the GRU. Those things saved my life so many time
Man, glad to see my fast boi get some love from the the Titanic John.
That advertisement has some real balls attached to it.
*IM SOLD*
I still will always prefer the Holiday punch because it’s the only multiplayer weapon I’ve ever seen which can pull off having a stun mechanic and not be infuriating to play against.
Reminder that dalokohs bar can heal back lost max health, not just give you 50 max health, all 100 healing that the dalokohs gives, it goes straight into max health
“Man do I hate myself!”
You and me both, pal. You and me both.
You hate Big Joey?
Stuff No, I hate myself.
You pad your health with overheal until your actual health catches up
the fact that i was in a game with big joey has made my whole year
It's about time, I've been using the GRU since I got them a while ago. I really think they're great because they allow me to get to battle much faster.
I never understood why people dropped them after JI, they're still very useful, you just need to use your brain to make sure you don't arrive at the front line with 150hp :p
“Unload your punches like a UFC fight gone horribly wrong”
No, Big Joey! My surprise GRU charge strat has even revealed to all!
You'll be surprised how many players just panic when you pull out the GRU and charge at em swinging. They don't know how to react because SUDDENLY THERE'S A HEAVY IN THEIR FACE!
I find it's most useful to duck around a corner first and then re-emerge with the gloves on. They're expecting rev speed, but you're moving at the speed of a pyro or demo. Totally different.
The eviction notice is the only killstreak that I have
Yo thanks Joey, i've had a pro ks version for a while, and this is gonna triple it's price lmao
Hey big joey i have an idea for a New heavy item
Mini dispenser: the heavy can carry a miny dispenser on his back in exchange for the sandvich slot and he can give healing and ammo to nearby teammates but the heavy wont be able to use his or other dispensers, the enginneer can help refill the heavy's mini dispenser
‘Twas in your game Gilgamesh the destroyer
I think the most interesting fact of the Jungle Inferno's change to the GRU is that they literally just made it the version that was used in VSH/Freak Fortress.
although this is a GRU episode, I will simply say that I renamed my warrior's spirit to "the second amendment"
Good name
Love your content Joey! Exceptional Heavy advice and playthrough. Still waiting in the Heavy update. If the Jungle Inferno wasn't the Heavy update.
I know it’s pretty niche but the dalokohs bar actually gets regains you back 100 of the health you lost during your rollout, so they make a pretty solid combo
After this video you know every heavy main is gonna start using the GRU
ha! see? i'm not crazy! i'm not crazy! HA!
Side note that should be mentioned; If you try to recreate the infinite overheal exploit with those gloves, you’ll start losing health.
6:45 this is how I feel everytime I go meele with the heavy
Finally, bread monster heavies may get the recognition they deserve as a legitimate subclass.
