- A walk around the outside and a look inside the historically important Canterbury Cathedral, in Kent.
Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the Cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Cathedral is a pilgrimage destination famous for being the location of the murder of Thomas Beckett and immortalised in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tails.

Hello, and thank you for posting your walk around Canterbury Cathedral. As a medieval historian/paleographer I have visited here many, many times. By far, for me, the cloisters are the main attraction, dating back to the much earlier Benedictine Priory of Christ Church, and across the grass towards Kings School are the Norman Steps, another survivor of that era.
Surprisingly, You did not see the Martyrdom of Thomas Becket, whose murder created one of the most important pilgrimage destinations up until the time of Henry VIII - when it was dismantled - no matter, maybe next time :)
Not a bad walk though, so well done !!!!
I wonder how long until someone would comment on that. I had planned to turn back through the wheelchair access tunnel to the martyrdom, and then completely forgot! I did see it while exploring earlier of course, but failed in capturing it. Next time! I found the cloisters to be much more hushed and respectfully peaceful that the Church, which I didn’t expect. You may enjoy the last part of my recent Reading walk. I visit the Abbey ruins. Take a look!
@@walkingworld6441 Thank you - I will keep an eye out for that - all jolly good :)
Thanks for the upload. Years ago I remember a friend saying that Canterbury Cathedral was the “real thing”. When I asked about this he said, “Of course there are many extraordinary Gothic Cathedrals throughout Europe, however Canterbury is the apogee of them all”. Now many years later I can appreciate what he meant. I’ve been fortunate to visit dozens of examples in many countries and Canterbury somehow seems to surpass all others, certainly internally.
So glad you appreciated the video. I enjoyed visiting and sharing. It’s pretty incredible! Although, I don’t feel I know enough about the Cathedral to fully appreciate it. So much to history to explore! That said, I’m certainly inspired to find out more and visit again! Hope you saw lots to enjoy! 👍
I was there in September 2022. I usually visit in July and September. I wondered whether I would suddenly see myself stroll into view, but I didn't, lol.
I wish I’d caught you. Maybe next time! 👍
