In a world where the teen isn't 'American' or 'Afghany' enough, this Muslim spoken word poet found solace with a pen and microphone. Meet Marjan Naderi, a Muslim American teenager creating her own space in the spoken word space and elevating the stories of her community.
Marjan started competing in slam poetry competitions at age 15. Now at 17, she's won multiple competitions and titles. Often, she finds herself being the only hijabi poet, sometimes the only Muslim American competitor at all.
Marjan uses her art and platform to talk about vulnerable topics including sexual assault and racism in America.
Get to know the power of Marjan's words and heart in this all new episode of NowThis' HER STORIES.

I don't like religion, but Muslims are the nicest group of religious people I've personally encountered. I visited a Syrian restaurant to the nicest Muslim family eager for me to try their dishes. Fantastic. I don't believe in their religion but they treated me with respect, and I treated them with respect. Try it out some time

The enemy are not Muslims or people of any faith for that matter. The real enemies of humanity are racists, bigots, supremacists, terrorists and those along that line and not your neighbourhood Muslim/Jew/Christian etc. I understand people's ignorance though, if I wasn't Muslim I'd probably hate Muslims too considering how Islam is portrayed on the media...

Another incident of racist card. If you are migrating to a country with different culture, try to adapt to it, don’t try to make the culture adapt to you. It is simple as that. There is no Muslim or Christian over here simple. If you never tried to look unique no one of going to bother you anywhere in the world. Same issue happened to the American researcher who went to Indian island to preach Christianity and got killed. Keep your religion back home who ever it white, black, brown, yellow skinned doesn’t matter.

Are you comparing her to a isolated tribe? They have their own mind and law different from us, who's not a isolated tribe. And hey she's not encouraging anyone even not FORCE anyone to be a muslim, just respect her religion. So if you migrated to another country you have to be less religious and for this case take off your hijab to be able to ADAPT to the new country? What? No. Religion is not restricted only in some country. American also have muslim american, just minority. Well, if anyone who wants to be muslim in the end it's the person's choice. According to history that's how religion spreads too, through trading, traveling. migrating, etc.. no matter what the religion is. Explain me what you meant by 'trying to look unique', pls. If you talking about her hijab. Can't be help, she chose to wear hijab, it's not like she intentionally wanting to look unique to attract curious people. She has to wear it because she chose it, just in America, islam is a minority religion plus not many muslim woman who wear hijab so it's considered 'unique' in there. There's nothing wrong with hijab, and it's not a symbol of opression if that's what in your mind. Just so you know many hijabi woman have succesfull career, not married or married. Or because 9/11 trying to look unique is looking like a muslim? Maybe you should meet muslims, they're good people, those isis is like exclusively a bunch of extrimist. -_-
Just imagine maybe if your religion have its own unique attire like hijab, turban in sikh, kippah in jewish, orthodox veil, and you migrating to another country which your religion is the minority and you considered 'unique' there. Do you choose to take off that and be less religious 'in order to adapt to the culture' then? How are you feeling when people trying to take off that or pointing or even mocking your religious attire? Or even, mocking your religion?
Freedom in America? Yeah not really for people like you.

The problem is why she didn't stay in her country & stick to her own culture? Every country has its own positives and negatives. In that way afghanistan is also nice country. Americans will never tolerate any foreign invaders to conquer their culture & land. Same as every persons does to their own country. Its like poor children ignoring their small hut then hoping every possible way to sneak into a rich neighbour's home to live there as a refugee or second grade citizen.. But rich neighbours may consider these poor children because of their politeness. But it doesn't mean this poor ones can live forever happily there. Arrogance & insult will always haunt this poor humans. everybody should stay in their own homeland no matter how poor we are. First try to make our own land rich or atleast neat & clean. Then try to peek into other's lifestyle. Developed countries already applied this strategy few centuries ago. Thats why economy, town planning & infrastructures are now best in their land. No matter how fluently she talk or handles the english accent, wears denims..it doent make her american. The more she seeks validation, the more she will loose her pride. Same applies for expats or refugees in any countries.
